  1. And can a motherboard support 1150 as well as 2011 sockets? (I mean 2 diff. sockets)

    No it cannot happen.

The LGA1150 and LGA2011 are very divergent, have a different North-Bridge to control operations so it is impossible for you to get motherboards with two different sockets.

You might get a few dual-LGA2011 socket based design on the market though. Not worth it unless you can foot the hefty electricity bill and plan to run a commercial server.

I will be going to college this year for B.tech and will plan to develop games n stuff, is it of any use for me??

No, go for a Haswell i7 instead of this or wait for Haswell-E chips come out later this year, although don't expect a lot of performance improvements in single-threaded tasks vis-á-vis vanilla chips (Haswell), increased power consumption and cooling requirements come complementary though.

^^GTX 780 is at around 60k so out of the budget i think..... i was thinking of like gtx 680 maybe and i might do overclocking so liquid cooling is a must and i want to run top end games in ultra plus want it to serve me for 7-10 years (Maybe 4-7), first 4 years i want all ultra then it should atleast be able to play all games till 6 years and then just not go obsolete!

Get this out of your head that seven years later an over-clocked PC will be capable of keeping pace with the newer generation titles / applications. The turnover time for hardware has dropped rapidly, three to five years is the maximum you can expect from a PC, no matter how expensive.

Please note that Kepler chips (GTX6** / GTX770) by nVidia are not conducive to over-clocking and you are not going places with it, stick with AMD if you want to over-clock.

If you want a configuration, this is what I suggest

    Intel Core i7 4770k ~24500/- + Noctua NH-D14 ~5500/- or Thermalright Silver Arrow ~4200/-

    ASUS Z87-PRO ~17000/-

    G.Skill RIPJAWS 8GB x2 ~8500/-

Crucial M4 or SAMSUNG 840 Pro series 256GB SSD (source these from, here -- onlyssd.com)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 or Western Digital Blue edition 1TB ~4000/- (get as many as you desire keeping in mind future data storage needs)

ASUS / HIS / Sapphire HD7970 GHz edition (6GB) ~43000/- or ASUS / ZOTAC! GTX780 3GB ~50000/- (for a water cooling kit, you need to do your own homework and source components from abroad, start looking here FrozenCPU)

    Seasonic M12II-750W ~7200/-

Cooler Master HAF XB ~6500/- (compact so that you have lesser issues lugging it around) or Corsair Graphite 600T ~9500/-

    ASUS PA23Q ~18000/- or DELL U2412M ~18500/-

Add a UPS and spike board in-case the electricity supply in your college is dodgy.

    SSD - Samsung is good.

No support in India and the only place to source is from onlyssd.com. Also, SSD's are still too expensive to justify in a mid-range build. Small SSD's do not cut it.

RAM - Get 2x4gb instead. Corsair is good.

I would put my money on G.Skill instead, far superior and use much better IC chips from Hynix and SAMSUNG (in their top kits), Corsair till recently was using Elpida which went under.

Only thing that Corsair has to swing in its favour is the warranty cover.

    Power - hmm..800W? 600-650W should be fine.

For PlayStation, even the Seasonic S12II 520W should be more than enough.

Processors - 23k, over priced. If you really planning to get Haswell, check out: i5-4670K 3.40GHz 4C 4T ~ 17990 INR

    (still pricey)

    Or check for 3rd gen: Intel i7 3770k / Intel i5 3570k

    GPU - Do not waste money on that 6GB card. Get GTX 770 (4GB)/GTX 780 (3GB)/7970 (3GB).

By January, prices would have shifted and OP will have better Haswell chips to look at, Ivy-Bridge is a strict no-no from my side.

Same for the GPU, AMD HD9*** series should be out for close to ~three or so months. nVidia Maxwell not expected before Q1 2014.

I wanted to ask you....How is amd fx8350??...it is quite cheap and it is being compared to intels i7 chips...you think it is worth going for full amd system??

Also i am soundphile person ...while going for this new setup ...is there any particular thing i can keep in mind about motherboard and all?? some mother boards come with good surround thing......i believe.

It would have been a good chip if you were looking at multi-threaded tasks, rendering work or SoHo set-up. For gaming not so good compared to Intel Ivy-Bridge processors, Haswell is in another league altogether.

For audio, I suggest that you look into a decent audio card ~1500/- -->4000/- rather than getting anything from on-board chipsets. If you want to know what is on offer, check the listings @Pro Audio Home.

    Hope this helps, Cheerio!
  2. Past few days i did some reading on the processor with whatever little time i am getting and i have been reading about haswell ...the sites that i read about it said the processor is mainly for mobile devices and laptop and that on idle it is good but when u fully utilize it can get really hot . I guess I will need very good cooling system for it ,isn it??

btw do you recommend i5 3570k?? also if yes which motherboard do you recommend??

also between g.skill and corsair ....which one is better ?? any particular recommendation.

Thanks for the kind words Mohit Sir.

Yes, the articles you read are true, although Haswell is a major release it is geared towards laptops / notebooks / ultrabooks and it shows because of the better power efficiency and thermal statistics for those chips.

This does not negate the need for it on desktop, Intel's last desktop oriented chips to release were in late 2009 -->early 2010, the Nehalem family of processors. Since then Intel has been trying to whittle away as much power and thermal inefficiency it can from its chips, so performance change is incremental but the improvements per-core, per-clock are more substantial. Also with each passing generation Intel has been trying to improve these areas

    • iGP (integrated graphics) on processor die
    • per-core / per-clock, single threaded performance
    • improved power gating (for thermal efficiency)
    • new execution libraries

Now if you ask me to compare a Haswell chip to an Ivy-Bridge chip, I would say go for the former because

    • you have not owned an (a) Ivy / Sandy-Bridge system
    • performance per-clock is much higher
    • not such a massive issue of heating up like what happened with Ivy-Bridge pieces

If you go for a Core i5 3570k the overall cost would be higher for you because, you would need a Z77 based motherboard and a dedicated cooler for keeping your processor cool to over-clock it. Something you would not need to invest if you go down the Haswell path.

Between Corsair and G.Skill I suggest you go for the latter because they use better quality chips than Corsair. Although on stock performance of both is equal and Corsair after sales are better. Maybe you can ask M.D. Computers if they would help you swap faulty RAM chips from G.Skill in the future.

    Hope this helps, Cheerio!

  3. how is itwares?? are they good in shipping products and packaging and genuine dealers??

It is a legit dealer, although I have heard mixed reports of his handling of shipping products. Some say it is delayed, some say it is pretty snappy.

You are based in Calcutta, right, have a look at M.D. Computers @Chandani Chowk.

  4. My research is for someone who's interested in the android platform but not a hardware wh**e primarily. Keeping that in mind -- What makes you think I am a hardware *****?

    1) The average apps out there don't fully take advantage of all four krait cores and i can't tell you if any of the more popular apps like facebook, chrome, etc. will ever utilize all four cores, god forbid if they ever should. -- The average application on PC's, heck gaming is also not pursuant of multi-core architecture. Every consecutive leap forward in architecture brings in better efficiency and performance per-clock. This drives up performance per-watt, efficiency, better execution of said task. So even if you compare said chips clock-per-clock the performance would be better and newer hardware means longer life. The One X+ is past its prime while the ZR is relatively new.

    2) The SLCD2 screen is better than that of the ZR. That's it. I think we can both agree on this. -- To each his own, I did not brow beat you into agreeing with me, did I. Just said that in my opinion SONY stock TFT's are fine for my taste and preferred by me vis-á-vis S-AMOLED and SLCD2. If you like the hTC screen I have no quarrel.

    3) You have a point here.

    4) Good for future Xperia owners. Why care if Sony takes a pro-modding stance? I'm just happy that the guys working on the S2/S3 decided to move over to Xperia than just quit the modding community. -- Because once upon a time SAMSUNG and hTC had the same amazing community support, it is only once the corporates started acting all pig headed and tried to stonewall development on their devices did interest in them fall. Community support prefers to work with open standards rather than things that are bottled up and stored at the bottom of the sea level of secrecy. Go read XDA if you want to know the full story, it archives these things very well.

    5) The ZR will fetch a better price whether it be 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 months old over a One X+. -- Gives, any new phone will but I doubt Boltonfan is looking to sell his device so soon.

  5. CPU - Tie (They're both head to head, Clock-for-Clock) -- better chipset, better GPU, better CPU, yes nothing takes advantage of it (now) but it is a more powerful package at the same price. It is like saying the new Intel Haswell line-up is redundant because it performs just ~20% more than existing Ivy-Bridge chips for the same power draw.

Display - One X+ (BE2 is no match for SLCD2 at 720p) -- Really don't see any reason why people decry SONY's screen, it is not like you go around sharing everything on your screen with your colleague or air regular 1080p RIPz on your phone in the office. Colour reproduction is fine, it may not have the deepest blacks but it gets the job done.

Build Quality - Tie (Not much to comment here)

Durability - Xperia ZR (IP58 certification speaks for itself)

Battery Life - Tie (Based on online reviews i'd say they'd both deliver with no difference) -- User replaceable makes a world of difference. I have a non-replaceable battery handset and it is a pain, you agonise over the battery more than anything else.

Camera - Tie (Personally, i think this feature is nothing more than a marketing gimmick)

    In-built memory - One X+ (64gigs is really tempting)

Customization - Xperia ZR (I'm told that most of the guys responsible for customizing ROMs for the S3 have ditched the Galaxy line for Sony's Xperia) -- That is because of SONY's pro-modding stance.

Resale Value - Xperia ZR (Its brand new to the market) -- Do you keep selling your mobile every three months?

Thanks guys. I loved the display of the htc one x plus and the audio quality was amazing too! But I'm getting the zr, which is newer and is pretty good and water resistant :P! Just ordered!

Congrats Sire, may it serve you well.

  6. Xperia ZR vs HTC one x plus pros and cons please. Have to decide in an hour :P

    ^^

    • Newer SoC, newer generation
    • Smaller screen (this is a plus for me) with poor viewing angles
    • Removable and larger battery
    • Water-proof and dust resistant
    • Good build
    • Expandable memory (internal 8GB, out of which 5GB should be accessible and up-to 32GB expandable memory)
    • longer official support (being a newer device)
    • underwater camera
    • SONY

    One X+

    • Bigger and better screen
    • Good build
    • Internal memory of 64GB
    • hTC

Now it is your choice tovarishj.

  7. But the Lenovo has GT 750M SLI,which gives better performance than the GTX 765M. Although there might be micro stutter in the SLI,but I don't think it will be a major worry. I haven't read anything about the battery backup though.

The SLi configuration means unless you have a dedicated power source you cannot sit down and present / work anything on your laptop, so good luck with that 6-cell battery because it won't give you more than an hours back-up even with everything turned down to bare minimum, you can consider a 9-cell battery but that shall raise the cost and weight. The device will weigh a good ~3 -->5 kg so keep that in mind as well.

Also, better clarify if Lenovo India will service and back it up. As far as I know DELL allows you to transfer the warranty on an Alienware and continues servicing it till the end of the warranty period.

  8. Thanks for recommendation, sackboy. But these are headphones, aren't they? I do have decent sounding headphones already. Need headsets (i.e. with mic functionality).

Edit, sorry those have two inputs.

You can look at SoundMAGIC MP-21's ~1100/- -->1600/- (cheaper to source from here)

    Hope this helps. Cheers!

  9. I need a notebook as I usually play FPSs on my pc and college starts next month so I won't be home much. Plus I'm taking up architecture so I'll need a decent machine to work on.

What about the Lenovo y410p and y510p? or anything from the Asus rog range?

Where are you going to college? Do you expect to carry around the PC all the time?

If I were you, instead of going down the laptop route, I would build a µATX or mini-ITX PC and carry that around, with that at-least you would have more power and lesser of said warranty issues.

If you strongly want to go for a laptop, go for the Alienware you had short listed (with the GTX765M) as you would have to contact ASUS India directly for their RoG series notebooks.

The Lenovo Ideapad's that you have enquired for are great in the processor, RAM, display department whilst lack in the GPU prowess and battery backup would be awful with those 6-cell batteries provided stock.

Also where do you plan to source the Lenovo's from because I had to go to the US site to find them and get their spec-sheets.

  10. Any other notebook with similar specs and price point? Not more than 15 inches.

The SAGER model that Joe Cool has provided is much better, the only drawback would be no support in India.

Also, please note that V-RAM does not affect the performance of a GPU in anyway unless you are speaking of multi-monitor setups or resolutions in excess of 2560 x1440 which these notebook GPU's are incapable of.

And can I ask why do you want to go for a gaming laptop only?

  11. My friend wants to buy a phone for 13-15 k guys. Any suggestions? He says that camera and battery should be decent.

The following options for your friend, Sire

    • SAMSUNG Galaxy S Advance
    • SAMSUNG Galaxy Grand (from eBay)
    • SONY XPERIA L
    • NOKIA Lumia 620 (if your friend is open to Windows Phone)

    Hope this helps, Cheerio!

  12. Can a 6.3 inch device even be labeled as a mobile phone?

It should be called as a tablet with calling feature.

The SAMSUNG Tab 2 is ~7.0" in measure so no the device is not a tablet but I do feel that the line has been blurred and this morbid obsession with rising screen sizes will make standard phone development take a back seat with a bad impact for peeps like me who prefer having phones with a moderate screen size (3.5" -->4.5").

Did I say something wrong Sire?

Bad analogy, unwarranted SAMSUNG hate, poor wording. What?

  13. mega mein bhi do-do range ? samsung is adapting chinese model insofar as spreading its influence in every damn subset and aggressive push for hype.

It has been good for them (because larger screen = better handset, save iPhone) but right now every Grand owner must be feeling stupid and really I cannot even differentiate the phones from a frontal glance, almost all the handsets look the same. Is stupid. Entire team (design) is babies!

But I don't think they aim to be a classy company anyway :P

I don't think that was ever their aim, save for the high-end Wave series handsets nothing in the SAMSUNG line-up came close to the definition of classy.

To make an analogy, the AK series of rifles surely are not the most beautiful or most refined looking designs in the world of firearms but the rifle at hand is the rifle that is used.

  14. yup it was, inside a big black box containing a map, glossy guide book, paper kraft, curse coin ,letter and OST dvd!

Yes, I bought the same thing, worth the ~1500/- spent on it.

Anyway tell me when you want to start / write that petition to NAMCO Bandai. Cheers!

  15. so anyone wanna start a petition or a letter?

I will not mind pitching in that even if I won't purchase this title, can we add The Witcher 3 to the list as well keeping mind the entire melodrama over the previous titles retail release here.

P.S. -- Did you get a Premium Edition complementary from them?

  16. I am sorry i have really missed on processor stuff ever since my last pc purchase which had c2duo....so n00b here....

No need to be sorry, yes, considering that you never bought an Sandy / Ivy-Bridge based system it makes sense to skip all those and directly go for the newest pieces on the market.

  17. guys, do we not need invoice to get warranty on itel processor someone is selling i5 3570 for Rs 12k without invoice but has put warranty screenshot ...

No need of invoice, it is based on the S/N stamped on the processor.

Is this the stock Intel 3570 or 3570k. In my opinion stick with a brand new Haswell based PC, latest and greatest for the same price.
