Not really about quality, but brand value/cache at the moment. Sony had great games in 2009-10, but most of them didn't sell. Xbox is becoming popular/gaining friction again due to gamepass but last generation was pretty terrible for them as they not only lost the market and mind share but most of their franchises lost the appeal they used to hold, including Halo

If most of MS's games had the cache that they used to have during 360 era, they wouldn't have Gamepass. Its all relative. Its not like Sony or even Nintendo games are on Gamepass, so comparison is moot anyway. Issue comes with games like MLB which are full priced on one platform and "free" on the other.

The moment Sony and Nintendo doesn't have the games for which people are willing to pay full price, they would start giving away their games in a subscription service as well. Not too difficult to understand. Right now, both of them are printing profits from their gaming divisions. Having said that, no one has to buy games at launch. Wait for a sale or used copies if full price is too much for you.
