^^
He did scan the whole of D and that makes it 30% of capacity but he said he cant retrieve it.
I will ask him again and also take a quote. lets see.
-
all the best
It turned bad.
The surface scan stopped after D drive ( i had c, d and e) . He(recover er) says he has tried changing the board and the results are still negative, so he now says the only way is to rip it apart (and loose warranty ) and do it the hard way.
He is not committing a price as he would know only after its taken apart.
So now, I will have to factor the cost of a new drive along with unknown recovery charges.
So Should I should I get it back and send it to you instead? will that help?

Actually do like this...
1. Do the surface scan and try to recover...thats the data recover er is gonna do it... which if i got it,would have done too
2. If step 1 is not working then probably ur hdd is bust... only ways
a. 0 level data recover/or the recovery which takes hours..too costly...1000 bucks a gb or so.... for this a pro is needed...coz it takes lots of tech/patience
b. Buy the EXACT same HDD for seconds and replace the pcb by a pro...coz if u screw up... or u can do it..if u have done it once...
I have given the HDD to this guy(recover er). He seemed sensible enough for me to leave the HDD with him. He said he would charge me between 2500 to 5000 to recover everything depending on the method used. He also said the HDD would be under warranty after this exercise, so seems like he would be doing a surface scan like you said. Keeping my fingers crossed, I`m supposed to meet him tomorrow.

@ Jeri
When I boot up , the beep takes unusually long , it tries to find the HDD, and fails. I enter BIOS to see that the disk is not listed there.
The disk didnt fail while I was working on it, it just didnt get started on saturday morning. So I`m assuming its not a mechanical failure and partitions should be ok along with the boot sector.
Could be an electrical failure?
The disk itself is just 2 months old .Thanks for the offering me the recovery
, I might just do that. I just want to try everything at my end before I can send it over.I do have a spare disk , so I will download acronis tonight and give it a try.
UPDATE
I checked the hardisk on another PC and it failed to recognize. Now I`m more inclined to believe that the problem is electrical or PCB rather than a mechanical failure.
Called up a Guy(data recover er) in Indranagar who asked me to take the disk there. He also said he would be doing the preliminary investigation in front of me( what a relief).
Alternatively my friend suggested me to pick up another hard disk of same make same capacity and rip both the HDD's apart and replace the board and try.( This still works out better than paying 1000 per GB of recovery)
Ofcourse, there is always the Jeri option
I am going to the data recoverer now, will take a call depending on the outcome.

yes...........

Good one, now only hope they can hold Pool.

@ arun and aftrunner
Now, I rarely keep my ahem..."prized possessions" on the hard drive, only ones that are there, like " just downloaded stuff "which eventually finds its way in to DVD's.
Arun, just like you one of my pals alphabetical order stuff got destroyed during partitioning exercise. To this day he goes in to a depressive state when he thinks about it

Actually that incident prompted me to keep backups on DVD's.
Now what I don't want to loose are the thousands of pictures that are stored on the HDD. These are various travel pics that half my life was spent on.

So i woke up on saturday morning to find that my PC wont boot and found that my SATA 500 gb had died on me.

I have checked the cables , all good. Tried connecting it to another PC , still no luck.
Its under warranty and should get replaced but thats least of my problems.
I have loads of important data on it.

I want atleast 300 GB recovered
Where do I take it in bangalore? What are the charges? Anyone been through a similar exercise?

@ashirth

.. + with each book u relate yourself.. each book has an individual feel to it..
+1 mate.
+1, ebooks and ereaders are the last alternative. I didnot know that the market for a device like kindle is so huge..Though I'm sure most people still like their good ol conventional books. Books can never be replaced
Conventional paperback it is for me, but my book collection is small and always remains so because of friends taking them and not returning.

The white tiger is a good book, an excellent book. Period. But you have got to have a taste for such novels. It depicts the alternate, not so lucky, underdeveloped India in one of the most satirical way possible. The struggles of the narrator are the everyday struggles of millions in this country whom the 'progressive India' seems to have forgotten.
But then again, you need to be open minded to read such books. I loved the book. If you read it as a fiction , you might not enjoy it as much. But, if you see it as a documentary on the struggling-rural india, its a classic.
I have come half way now and its definitely not bad. Its quite brutal at times in its depiction of India and Indians.

Bookers are never meant to be good and exciting.

I think you are right, also when I carry it around , it attracts a lot of unwanted attention.

Is "The White Tiger" any good?

Need some help getting my system to play GTA 4 online
Got the game installed it , activated it , proceeded to create the social account and also got the windows live account , got them linked too.
Now when I try to connect , it gives me a network error
Internet IP Address says " not signed"
PC account is blank
UPnp is blank
I have permissioned gta 4 and windows live on my firewall (sygate). I have installed the mandatory latest GTA4 update patch along with hot fix for windows live .
Googled the issue and found that these two need to be ok
# Port forwarding must be enabled on the TCP port 80.
# Port forwarding must be enabled on the TCP port 3074.
Tried port testing and both of them timed out. If only the ports are the issue how do I get them working?
I have enabled Upnp on my router and my connection is always on type ( dont know how else to describe it). Its a BSNL connection and i use a sterlite MT 882 wired modem.
Spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot and failed. Please help
