  1. Cook has to enforce the follow on now. If he decides to bat then he will waste half the day setting up the target. That's half a day of less batting to do for us.

If we have to bat in the 4th innings, runs will no longer be relavant to us (assuming that the target is not gettable in the first place). Our batsmen will then have the leisure of batting at their own pace. If he makes us bat in the 3rd innings runs will matter. Can't really expect us to bat 2 whole days no matter how well we bat so whenever we get bowled out we will need to have enough runs on the board to save the match.

  2. Despite stupidly giving our wickets away we still managed to survive a full day, and hopefully we can last a bit longer tommorow. If our batsmen can apply themselves we can easily last longer. Everyone will bat for time in the second innings and runs will be irrelavant. Even Dhawan and Rohit have played these kind of innings in the past. Dhawan made an 87 ball 19 against South Africa in the 2nd Test, and Rohit made an unbeaten 31 off 97 balls in the 2nd Test vs New Zealand. They should come out with that mindset. Every single batsman needs to play a part, even the out of form ones.

  3. Nevermind this innings. What is gone is gone. The good news here is that this pitch is very good for batting and the batsmen only got out because of their own mistakes. They still have to bat again and if they apply themselves they can save this.

Saving the follow on here (even if it is by just one runs) is very important as England will then have to bat atleast 40-50 overs to set us a target so we will have to bat that many overs less.

  4. We played so much better in South Africa on much tougher pitches against a much better attack Everything wide outside the off stump was left alone.

Here England are playing with half an attack and they still manage to pick 7 wickets in 90 overs.

  5. These kind of matches are usually great to watch as a neutral where one team gets far behind early in the match and has to struggle hard to save the match. But I don't think our team is comfortable playing this way. Only Vijay, Pujara and Rahane bat this way. Dhawan, Kohli and Rohit get restless if they go 5 balls without scoring. Kohli is the kind of a person who scored a hundred at a strikerate of 75+ when trying to save a Test.

England have done nothing to earn these wickets. Pujara, Vijay, Rohit and Rahane have gifted their wickets away. If England do win, it will not be because they deserved to win, but rather because we deserved to lose.

  6. and who do you think will put brain in Dhoni's hea, he is like a headless chicken himself when batting in test matches.

Rahul Dravid is our batting coach. Do any of these batsmen actually follow what he says?

Right now Dhoni is batting sensibly. As stupid as Jadeja is, he batted very well to save the first Tests.Just bat through the day and that will be enough.

  7. I guess he also does not understand cricket just like the rest of us here :P

Damn even I would have played with more sense and my only experience of playing cricket is batting at no. 7 for my school team at the U17 level (I didn't get to bat in the tournament)

He is a great strokeplayer, joy to watch when he is in full flow. If only he used his brains as much as his wrists. And Rahane's dismissal came as a shock. Never expected him to do that.

Dhoni should be talking to these guys about the match situation and what we need at the moment.

South Africa were in a similar situation but they managed to save the match by playing out a large number of overs in both innings. Our main aim here should have been just avoiding the follow on and taking up as many overs as possible.

  8. Very well played South Africa. Not at all easy to bat 4 sessions in such conditions.

As of England we can't really do much to stop the runs at this stage. All we can do is wait for the declaration. At least the batsmen know the task at hand so they should get themselves mentally prepared to bat long. There's a little over 3 days and we get to bat twice. South Africa managed an escape and maybe we can too.

  9. Shami bowled well today. Well much better than the last 2 Tests. Got close to Cook and Ballance's outside edge a few times. There is very little movement in the pitch. Don't expect Anderson to have much success here. Stuart Broad will probably do well here if he bowls short and fast.

  10. I have a feeling this will turn out like the 2002 Headingley Test where were scored 628 and bowled them out twice. Except that the roles are reversed.

We can't do much now with the ball. There's 4 bowlers and one of them is Jadeja. We can't over burden the seamers... Bhuvaneshwar has already bowled 18 overs and it's not even tea yet. Let Jadeja bowl until we get the new ball and then attack with Kumar and Shami.

  11. Just checking the odds for England's next permanent Test captain.

There's Bell and Broad with 3/1, Joe Root 9/2 and Anderson 9/1.

And there's Chris Read with 6/1 (lower odds than Anderson haha), Paul Collingwood 12/1, Kevin Pietersen 66/1 and Andrew Flintoff 200/1. Wtf lol.

Thankfully they don't have odds for Vaughan, Hussain or Atherton.

  12. @BB - Peterson fell because of too much blocking, it was good captaining from Mathews. I think that is reason they are not blocking too much now. And man, there are lot mud explosion.

Btw, this is England's best opening stand

Peterson is a walking wicket. I don't even know when was the last time he had a good game. Not everyone is built for the blocking game.

Guys like de Viliers and du Plessis are capable of batting for long periods without scoring runs.

  13. They need 369 in 127 overs. 2.88 RPO. 0.8 more than their 1st innings RPO.

It doesn't work that way mate. They can win if they score at 2.8 rpo for 4 sessions. But do you really think they can last 4 sessions if they bat like that?

In their first innings they couldn't even cross 2 rpo in the first 2 sessions on a day 2 pitch. Now they have to bat on a day 5 pitch after it rains.

Their only hope is getting it to 150 in a session with 2 set batsmen at the crease and lots of wickets in hand. But even getting to that situation won't be easy.
