  1. Yeah, I know!. In fact I had the same reaction to MANY of the places in the game. Not as much thought has gone into making the world as ds1.

There are actually a lot of nice shortcuts and the level design is pretty good, not DaS1 good though. the problem is fast travel. It really ruins the flow of the levels.

  2. Even with the ring you need a decent amount of HP to survive the fall. Alternatively you can wait to meet an NPC who will help you down the well later in the game. This is the intended way to progress to the lower areas.

  3. Yeah I'd pick any of the older city building games (Caesar series, Zeus, older Sim Cities) over the new one. And yeah Banished is incredible. Probably the hardest city building game I've ever played. It's almost a survival game.

  4. Yup Pyro + DEX is an awesome build. My very first build was a Pyro with an Ascended Pyro Glove and a maxed out Iaito. So much fun to play!

Also I don't think I could have been able to do an SL1 run without picking Pyro. It was surprising how easy SL1 was with a maxed Pyro Glove and spells (Great Combustion FTW!). Defeating O&S was much easier than any of my previous characters.

  5. The thing is, after spending hundreds of hours most of us are Dark Souls veterans at this point so the game will undoubtedly feel 'easy'. Imagine a first time player facing Lost Sinner or Ruin Sentinels or even The Pursuer for the first time. I think the bosses are well balanced, there's a good mix of challenging and straightforward/easy fights. The only thing I'm not liking is the addition minions in some of the fights, Dark Souls had only Capra Demon and Nito, I'm hearing it's even worse on NG+.

Even I feel the game is slightly weaker than the original Dark Souls but it's a great Souls game in it's own right. And the more I'm playing it the better it gets. There's a lot of stuff that isn't readily apparent and from what I know NG+ is a whole new beast. People who spent a lot of time with Demon's Souls felt the same about Dark Souls and thought it was inferior. Every Souls game is something special and unlike other game series' it's not about sequels being better and improved over the previous games. They're all different games with their own style and mechanics.

Anyway, back to the game itself, defeated Scorpioness Najka, very easy boss but getting to her is harder. Loved the area though and I got some great loot for my battlemage there (Lion Mage set FTW!). There was one other boss I faced later, I even forgot the name. It was so easy, I don't even know why it counted as a boss fight lol. Also ventured into the other Ratbros zone - Doors Of Pharros and killed it's boss - Royal Rat Authority. Died multiple times in this fight damn minions who can inflict toxic until I developed a practically flawless strategy.

Also, for those investing in pyromancy, make sure you buy Flame Swathe from the dude near the final bonfire at Lost Bastille. Incredibly damaging spell with an AoE. You get only 2 casts by default but it does massive damage to bosses who aren't resistant to fire. I was able to get Royal Rat Authority down to 30% health in 2 casts.

  6. Dsfix is basically a HUGE graphical improvement. Without it you will be locked to 720p and a blurry mess of a game. Just make sure you read the instructions and turn of the ingame AA.

As for the starting class, pick Pyromancer. It's the best class for beginners. Also your starting class doesn't really lock you into a specific style of play. You can always spec to a knight in heavy armor if you wish later. Pyro starts with decent melee stats and some useful spells which will make the early encounters a lot easier.

  7. I still wish the left touchpad was a stick and the right one remained a touch pad. I can adjust aiming and Right stick functions to a touch pad but its gonna be hard to get used to moving with one.

I am actually (pleasantly) surprised they are able to keep the color and the orientation of the buttons exactly as the 360 one. I would have thought those things would be copy right and trademarked up the a*s by MS.

The buttons are a welcome addition yeah but I still can't imagine playing something like DMC with touchpads. Maybe it will work but it's like undoing years of conditioning.

  8. BUMP, ok re-installed the game and started to play, guess what, the game requires freakin' GFWL support for going online .... and AFAIK, GFWL shut down last year and its booting me out of LIVE ....

looks like the devs don't bother to update the game to remove GFWL requirement .... how much does one miss by not going online in this game ? I always heard this game gives the best experience only online !

There's a rumour going that GFWL will be patched out in favor of Steamworks soon.

Playing online does help and is fun but my very first playthrough of the game was completely offline (it was on the 360 and I had no XBL Gold). I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

  9. SL 74, 68 deaths, 11 bosses defeated, currently in harvest valley. Dex build.

@Tyler, how should I redistribute my stats for a SL70+ battle mage build? Int? Faith? Att? ... Starting class was knight.

Magic makes the game slightly easy but some bosses still need melee so you need to fall back on melee weapons. For a Battlemage build I would invest in STR/DEX/ATTN/ADP/INT and little in FTH/VIT/END. Also apart from the stats you really need the right gear for a magic build - Clear Bluestone Ring +1, Dark Magic Hood, Archdrake Staff and the Lion Mage set are mandatory as they all boost damage and casting time. I finally finished collecting all these so I can help you out.

Taking on the Pursuer right now, got him down to half his health on the first try and died due to shoddy rolling :/

    I'll try summoning next time.

And there was a lot of talk of how you could go anywhere in the game even very early, but it's been pretty linear right now. Does it open up after Pursuer or it going to be like after Anor Londo type?

You can go to areas you aren't supposed to. In fact I'd say in that regard it's a lot less controlled than Dark Souls. Once you finish FoTG and Tower Of Flame, it's possible to go to Huntsman Copse, No Man's Wharf, Lost Bastille, Shaded Woods (if you find the item you need), Grave Of Saints/The Gutter/Black Gulch from Majula. All of these areas in turn connect to others.

  10. Champions Covenant - you're hardcore bro!

Anyway, SL 98 (I think), currently in Harvest Valley, 12 or so bosses down (2 primal), deaths - will have to check but all I can say is a LOT.

  11. Probably playing the game and avoiding spoilers? Then again, Dark Souls is the kind of game which has to be discussed and played at the same time. The whole community aspect of these games is one of the best things about them.

BTW PROTIP: When you unfreeze the petrified girl pulling the lever near Majula DO NOT pull the lever while she's still there. Talk to her, give her what she wants and let her move to Majula first. She's a Pyromancy vendor.

  12. Has anyone used the Soul Vessel? How does it work exactly? I m thinking about switching to a magic build.

You have to take it back to the women at Things Betwixt. It will allow you to redistribute your stats while keeping your current soul level.

  13. Thanks to my nephew's frustration now I realise that some of the "locked" doors can be bashed open. An Estus flask shard in the room above the second bonfire in the forest of giants. He got angry and was bashing the door and it broke open :D !

Yeah or in some cases if you hit the door, enemies will open it from the other side, however 'be wary of ambush'.

  14.

Cool, I'll be waiting for those greatsword drops. Need to get my dead angle on.

And do you think magic is useful for pure melee builds, for buffs? Would the investment be too much or will it be manageable?

The weapon enchantment spells could help but generally magic is weak without a lot of stat investment, unlike Dark Souls 1 you only become powerful once a stat crosses 30 and even 40. I'm currently sitting on 39 INT and I still can't use some of the uber damaging spells because most of them need 40+. The scaling also works differently this time, you get more bonuses past 30. There's also Pyro Iron Skin which was great for melee builds in Dark Souls 1, haven't tried it here yet but I'm guessing since Pyro also scales with magic stats now it may not be as effective. For melee builds I'd invest mostly in VIT/END/VGR/STR/DEX/ADP and since leveling is so fast you'll rack up points rather quickly.

Overall I feel Dark Souls 2 is geared more towards speciality builds than jack-of-all-trade builds. This is evident right from the character creation and starting classes.

In other news, I defeated the second major boss - The Rotten. The boss is actually pretty easy (hits hard but very slow) but the arena is tricky and I died there mostly due to environmental damage. Plus being a mage with relatively low HP pool means one hit from the boss can outright kill me. Also I felt magic was a bit difficult to use on this guy so I just resorted to melee / light armor and lots of dodging and running.

I also tried Belfry Luna but damn the area is a complete ganker's paradise. I'm pretty sure I can beat the boss solo but getting to the boss itself means getting ganked at least twice by the Blood Covenant while fighting midgets who hit like a truck. Will do this later I guess. The only place left for me in order to progress further is Harvest Valley. I think I will pay a visit to Huntsman Copse again and farm those poison butterflies for poison moss first.

  15. Next stop should be the Heide's Tower Of Flame. Go back to Majula and go down the stairs in the small catherdral-like building (adjacent to the cat's house / large mansion).

Or you could go fight the Pursuer (unlocked by the Soldier Key you get after defeating the Last Giant). The key also opens a few other doors in the surrounding area.

Mace is decent, you should get some greatsword drops in upcoming areas. In the meantime you can kill the Heide Knight in the Forest of the Giants (he's resting under a tree and non hostile) for his sword, which has lightning damage or get the Flame Longsword located near the second bonfire (where you find the Hag merchant). You have to go down the ramps and into a cave with a fire breathing lizard. Both are very good starting weapons. Not strictly STR weapons though.

@Meanmachine, putting points in those also increases your overall agility which affects recovery animations, weapon switching, rolling and spell casting time for magic users. Overall they have made the leveling faster but now you require a lot more points in stats for them to become truly effective. Also there's no useless stats this time (like Resistance from Dark Souls). Of course as a pure melee build you could ignore INT/FAI/ATT completely. Even for magic builds it helps to invest in both INT and FAI thanks to the new Hex magic and some of the better staffs which require both stats. Also, while anyone can use it, Pyromancy now scales with INT/FAI as well and not just the Pyro Glove. I'm currently running a 'battlemage' type of build, leaning more toward magic but I can fall back on my sword & shield when needed.
