  1. Yes shields are pretty good once you have high poise and find a decent 100% physical block / high stability shield. Unlike Dark Souls 1, you don't have a lot of options in the beginning though. You also need a decent amount of points in ADP. This reduces the delay between animations, in other words you can put your shield up much faster than usual. This is a HUGE departure from the original Dark Souls.

Anyway, defeated the Executioner's Chariot. Getting to the boss is much harder than fighting the boss itself. I suggest clearing out the path of all enemies before attempting the boss for two reasons. One the enemies on the path are really hard and it's extremely difficult to just ignore and run (you'll see why) plus they give great XP, second, the boss is not something you can beat in a couple of attempts. Again, not a difficult boss but the area is filled with grunts.

Then made it to the Black Gulch (area after The Gutter). I must say this small little level is by far the most frustrating area in the game so far... at least until you get to the hidden bonfire, which is highly recommended before fighting the boss of this zone.

EDIT: The leeches in Black Gulch can be farmed for Large Titanite Shards and Titanite Chunks.

  2.

+1, Worst enemy so far. Died a lot of times :ack:

BTW I just finished the Ruin Sentinels boss fight. Where should I go next?

Looks like you went the right way.

^ I thought it was not that great considering it was the first "major boss fight" of the game. The design of the boss (and the arena) herself (yes its a she) was bland and the moveset was similar to other boss fights one has already encountered. Plus the lock on was wonky during the entire thing and that was a major pain in the a*s. Comparatively, I liked the pursuer (dat entry) and old dragon slayer(mainly because of the nostalgia) much more. They might have been a bit easier but were much more memorable.

Regarding the Lost Sinner. You can open the chambers above the boss room with a key you get in Belfry Luna and light up the area. This makes the boss a bit slower and helps with the lock on problem. I didn't know this when I fought her but it's definitely recommended.

BTW for those who haven't done it already. Make sure you talk to the Miracle vendor girl near the bonfire above the Dragonrider boss area in Heide's Tower Of Flame and exhaust all her dialog. This will move her to Majula and you can get her to open the path to Huntsman's Copse which is an important area with several items and two bosses.

Also, this may be common knowledge too but you can unfreeze the petrified NPCs found in some levels with an item called Fragrant Branch Of Yore (again found as loot in some areas - so far I've found 3 - 2 in Harvest Valley and one in Sinner's Rise just after the boss fight). You should unfreeze the guy blocking the last bonfire in Lost Bastille as he's the Boss Soul trader. You can exchange boss souls for boss weapons and spells. Unlike Dark Souls 1, you don't have to craft the weapons, you can outright trade them for souls.

Anyway, I completed The Gutter last night - think a slightly easier Blighttown / Valley Of Defilement but not as interesting as either. A torch is highly recommended in this area.

  3. So anyone found those 3 pigs who gave me hell when I was playing DS game for first time? They take a lot of hits. Killing them was one of the most satisfying experiences in this game for me so far. f**k those pigs.

The pigs in Majula? LOL yeah, they can outright kill a low level player.

  4. I have come to the conclusion that those exploding mummies are the worst enemies in the game.

BTW I think I've defeated the first 'major' boss of the game, the Lost Sinner.

Tip for this fight - do the Belfry Luna area first. The key you get there helps a lot in this boss fight. Belfry Luna is a hidden area btw and is only accessible after using a Pharros Lockstone in Lost Bastille.

  5. It breaks but it can be repaired (for 3000 souls) and used again :)

And yeah that chest before the boss is kinda easy to miss since there's a corpse with an item right next to it. Check again.

  6. Where do u get the Ring of life? The health bar coming down to 50% is the biggest pain ever for me.

And how do u farm those effigies? I just find them randomnly. I still have 3 after using up two.

Binding Ring is in a chest just before the Dragonslayer boss in Heide's Tower Of Flame.

Effigies are found as fixed loot or dropped randomly by dogs in the Lost Bastille area. You can buy a few from the Old Hag vendor as well. There's a time when they will seem to be painfully rare and valuable but once you have the Binding Ring and do some co-op you'll have plenty of them stocked up.

  7. I doubt it's a bug, seems intentional, I still haven't found it but yeah it looks like a must have. Either way I don't think it will actually make the game too easy, probably bring it closer to Dark Souls itself... with the added task of repairing the ring from time to time. TBH even with the Binding Ring the HP loss hasn't really been hurting me.

  8. I have the PC version on pre-order too. Add me to the list.

Anyway, Skeleton Lords are down. It's a great spot for co-op btw. Helped at least 4 others for the fight. The boss is pretty easy to solo but damn cheap, they throw in the Wheel Skeletons in there :(

Dinjo, which boss? Normally you'll find co-op signs almost everywhere. Make sure you're human.

On and BTW, in case someone hasn't figured out how the regain humanity thing works in co-op.... the curse gets lifted little by little as you defeat bosses in co-op. The limit on the heath bar keeps decreasing until it's full. Once you beat help someone beat a boss after that you'll regain humanity. It's probably the best way to save effigies.

  9. LOL I never tried using the ballista in co-op.

@waveking, yup, I've realized that dodging/rolling and using i-frames is generally more effective than straight up tanking with a shield. I wish I could use one of larger STR swords, especially that Zweihander knock-off dropped by those bastards in Lost Bastille. Still, my +5 Flame Sword has served me well so far. It's definitely something everyone should get when they start a new character. Pretty easy to obtain and helps a lot in the starting areas.

  10. ^^Nice read. Thanks tyler ...it has always been great to read your view.

Shame that they did nothing about graphics.....the gameplay and all was always fantastic but the graphcis was what needed in this game to pull up things ...still have no doubt that it would be great to play.

I like the idea that there are too many bosses. I love it when games have that as long as it is nicely design also supported eually by good strategies to take them out...so how do you think are the boss designs in this game comapred to previous games till where you have played??

asking coz for me dark souls boss were big disappointment compare to Demon souls.

TBH the bosses I've faced so far were pretty generic at least in terms of design (one of the early bosses was a nice surprise - if you've played Dark Souls). Also only one boss actually required some skill and timing. I'm still fairly early in the game so I'm guessing the better bosses will show up later.

Anyway I'm past the Ruin Sentinels in The Lost Bastille. Had to summon two players for the fight... hey if they're not fighting fair, why should I? Helped a few others take out the Pursuer. Co-op is great while the game is new, you get summoned within seconds of placing the sign.

As for the graphics, clearly a lot of effort has gone in designing the areas and they're quite nice and varied artistically but they skimped out on the textures and effects, probably to balance out the frame rate. But even that is less than acceptable, sub-30 fps in some areas. Ugh. Also I feel the whole 'connected' nature of the levels is somewhat ruined by the always available fast travel system. Because of that it feels a lot like Demon's Souls' Nexus. The areas are still logically connected but you'll almost never use the routes once you've reached the bonfires.

TIP: the dogs in the Lost Bastille have a chance of dropping a Human Effigy. I've gotten quite a few from them... and now they're all dead :(

  11. Just read waveking's post from the last page. I totally agree about the movement and animation not feeling like Dark Souls. It feels somewhat floaty (similar to how it was in Soul Form in Demon's Souls) and not as weighty as the previous game. Also too many bosses :|

@MT, yes the framerate takes time getting used to when you have been playing mostly on PC. The last game I played on the PS3 was TLOU.

  12. Sup guys? Been playing for the last two days. So far my reaction is - yes, this is Dark Souls alright, except in some ways it's harsher and in other ways a little easier. Harsh because of the updated health/humanity system (though you can address some of it by getting the Binding Ring - which works like the Cling Ring from Demon's Souls), easier because of the fast travel. That said I got my a*s kicked several times - mainly in No Mans Wharf (very tricky area) and by the Pursuer who I tried to take on earlier than I was supposed to. Anyway I'm currently slogging through The Lost Bastille (another bitch of an area). I have already defeated several bosses and got some nice loot. I'm also kinda stuck at Royal Rat Vanguard, almost made it once only to be poisoned right at the end.

Currently playing an EZ mode Sorc but also investing in melee because magic doesn't really cut it in some areas. The enemies are generally more brutal time around and will punish every single mistake. I'm not sure if I like the despawning thing but it sure does help that you can gradually clear out the path between the bonfire and an annoying boss.

I must say the game looks kinda bad (probably worse than even Dark Souls in some areas). The art is still pretty good but the general lack of AA and the ultra low res textures look really crappy on the PS3. The difference between the earlier demos and the final game are staggering. Here's hoping the PC version has better textures.

Overall, I'm enjoying it a lot and I don't think I'll be able to play anything else for a while (by the time I'm done with the PS3 version it will be out on the PC :D).

PS: Yes getting humanity after helping someone defeat a boss seems hit or miss. Either a bug or a hidden mechanic.

    EDIT2: so yeah a bug.

  13. dante, check out Godzilla: Final Wars. It's relatively new. Most people didn't like it but it was good mindless fun. There's also some Matrix style action in it apart from the monster battles.

EDIT: you're obviously new to the whole kaiju thing. It has a HUGE cult following. And yeah Godzilla should be a hero.

  14. Nova. :majesty:

I'm only rank 20 with it and it already has about 200 maximum power. With maxed Power Efficiency mod I can just spam Molecular Prime forever.

Mprime is hilariously broken but loses it's effectiveness as enemies scale up (Pluto especially). It's still powerful but you need other frames around. Even my multiforma'd, power strength/efficiency/range optimized Nova cannot solo most of these missions. You really need a team. Rhino however can solo pretty much anything in the game. Then again, I'd never play solo in this game. Half of the fun is to see 4 maxed out frames spamming powers all over the level.

  15. Piper, I'll check if I can put together a short guide. The game is a whole lot more than what it first appears to be. In short the point is to collect stuff, build stuff and then play it. It's also extremely grindy. The experience is a lot like loot heavy stuff like Diablo or Borderlands. So if you don't enjoy grinding, farming and waiting you'd want to stay away from it. But if you don't mind all that and love checking out that new shiny toy you build after spending hours to craft it then it is definitely for you.

  16. PS3 version I believe has better performance (can't say for sure though). I have only tried the demo and it was fine, using the controller feels good and the inventory UI is quite nice (better than playing inventory tetris on PC). I almost bought it but then thought I'd rather save the money for Reaper of Souls.
