Ah, the android apple fights of yore

Let's just face it, there will always be a section of the crowd who will not look beyond iOS. Likewise for Android. Each OS has their own glaring niggles. Live and let live folks!

@Rithvik
Bro, Try out Juve's 3.1 XXJVK GB 2.3.3 rom. Quite a good rom and comes with a lagfix kernel (Yes, its still RFS :wallbash) I'm using launcherpro so its working okay. The copy-paste issues still exist though.
U will need to flash the stock ROM via Odin first. No pit required.
And I agree with AL. Wide variety of high end smartphones available in India today. What with the Inc S/Desire S/Xperia Arc/NS et all. Just today a friend of mine ordered the Inc S from Flipkart. Nowadays people r not thinking much before splurging 25k on a phone. Apple's missing a lot with their attitude here.

That's not an issue. It is all in the settings. There are two ways to solve it.
1. You must have enabled the option in gmail to add any person as a contact to whom you send email to. You can disable this option.
2. You can leave the above option enabled and instead go to the account settings in your contacts app on android for the gmail account and set it to sync only any particular groups you want. This way you can have as fine a control you want over what contacts you want synced and what you don't.
True. That is one big reason I may never switch to iOS. You have to do everything through itunes for iOS but I use linux and they don't even have itunes for linux.
Yeah, I just love this so much. Apps can interact amongst themselves so easily. e.g. The other day I coded up a simple app that turns the plume notifications on and off through a widget instead of me having to go into settings etc. (Though I later replaced the app with tasker. Tasker is such a brilliant app. I use it to control so many things and other apps behavior on the phone)
No, that I have right now, thing is google contacts was never my primary contacts book, So the thing is, the moment i enabled google sync on my local address book, it picked up all the contacts in Google. I had to then filter the weeds out from My contacts section and make my contacts the primary contact list. Now i'm making work and family and friends groups. its all ok now, just the initial cleaning up was messed up as the sync screwed up the existing contacts in my osx address book too.
In many ways, i like android too for all the reasons you've listed above. Google right now has far less kinks to iron out with GB and iOS has lot more to catch up on. I know that I cannot get an iphone now coz I will miss many things in android. I might temporarily shift to blackberry but android will be the primary OS today, unless iOS5 includes all the features its behind on today. . And if rumors are true, iOS5 will implement cloud music and data backup. And afaik, iTunes music> amazon mp3 atleast in terms of variety and collection?
Many Android users will prefer OTA and cloud, but i for one prefer to have both physical backups and cloud services. iTunes is my primary video and audio library program so it works very well for me. Although I know windows users have a less than stellar experience.
@Shantz, unless Apple starts cloud implementation of apps and data, till then yea for someone like you, iOS is a not possible.

Tell me something, this doubletwist app? Does it require me to use doubletwist app on the phone as well or can I continue to use poweramp?
Btw, the google ical sync I am aware of, just that sometimes the sync goes wonky, misses out some notes or recepients randomly. Which is why I said, bypassing google would help. Same for the contacts! I had to really work hours on google contacts because it adds each and every random email id into my contacts. Worst part is, when I enabled google contacts sync, it added all those dumb flipkart, amazon email IDs into my OSX addess book and completely messed it up! I had to start from scratch and had to completely clean up my google contacts, which is again why I said bypassing google is what I want. A desktop app which directly syncs with apple iCal and Address book and if need be, sync these two to google cal and google contacts. I hope you're understanding my point? I have just 1 laptop for work and home. So for me, a desktop solution works well. In a world where I'm living in wifi everywhere and have very good GPRS connectivity, your solution works much better.
I totally agree OTA is very handy in case of a new phone, but its not that bad on iOS. Infact, even if i require it to connect to itunes, atleast I can restore my phone, apps, contacts, mail everything just by restoring the backup without requiring internet connectivity. This is what I'm saying, no internet required. Plus, I have physical copies of all apps I've downloaded, free ones included, so I dont need to remember each and every app I have as everytime I sync, it will be there in my apps section in itunes. With Google's market app, it only keeps track of all the paid apps in your my apps section. Or is there a way to restore all your free apps too? I am not sure that google will not release an app to make complete physical backups on your computer, but I'm sure my point isnt as invalid as you're saying.
I'm kinda used to iTunes, since itunes works best on osx. N I dont listen to anything above 320kbps mp3s, so it works ok for me, but wil try doubletwist. USB syncing is way faster though.

^^ Outlook mail/contacts/calendar don't involve any google services. They connect directly to your exchange server. About syncing woes, I think there is seriously some issue with your phone as you seem to have a lot of sync, notifications, etc issues which many others including me have never faced. Probably something special to Galaxy S? But then I don't see other Galaxy S folks complaining about it.
But yes, a desktop sync app in addition to the OTA mechanism would be welcome but I don't see/expect them to do it.
I dunno. Actually I dont use exchange server. If i did, then ya everything falls into place. Notifications are ok so far (?) Thing is, i have to manually add my email account into K9 mail to receive my mail. I have sync issues with calendar and contacts only as I use iCal for calendar. I only hav a personal calendar and no work calendar. Anyway, its not a big issue as I have found workarounds for both contacts and calendar (using google cal and contacts as middleman). But its not the solution I would prefer. Mail since I transferred to Google apps, the IMAP has been working great
Baaki sab theek hai. GB has been good so far! I'm pretty sure its just samsung whose messed up with the RFS lag and touchwiz. I really need to spend time with an HTC incredible S or something to see if its really the galaxy only.
-
Whats the difference between the Incredible and Desire S? Incredible has better innards and camera i think but comes with Froyo whle Desire S is launched with gingerbread. They seem too similar to me.
-
^But how to sync my outlook address book and mail and iCal for example? It all involves using google's services as a middleman. The google sync is also wonky at times. I like having a standalone app for things than doing everything on a browser. This is why I'm saying that a proprietary app for both Mac and Windows will ease a lot of issues.
Btw, the market section only tracks paid apps. Is there a way to track all the free apps you had incase of a new phone or an OS reinstall? This is why having a backup of all your apps on ur system helps. Lets say you dont have internet somewhere, in iOS, i can sync back my apps with a click. OTA is fine no doubt, but I wish Google themselves released a desktop sync app for Windows/Mac/Linux. The blackberry desktop software is a good example of how it gets all ur existing outlook and exchange settings and outlook address book onto your phone. Of course, BB also backs your contcts and settings in their servers.

I faced that issue many times. Even now, its not possible!!..Copy paste was highly irritating at one point. I think finally in Gingerbread they made it ok. I think in eclair or froyo, I never knew where the cursor is as my finger used to hide the tiny text. It frustrated me to no end. Even in the browser while editing URLs, this was painstakingly difficult. In iOS, a small zoom loupe popped out which showed me where the cursor is.

Agreed. At the same time, many people who have techie friends/relatives refer to them when they need help making purchase decisions. SE is basically appealing to the enthusiast crowd as well with this decision. Average people would be unaffected before as well as after.
And the average joe usually doesn't bother to read these news or surf the forums. Again, it's the enthusiast crowd that SE is appealing to here.
I think the Xperia Arc and Play are pretty good phones, they're the first ones to the market after the Nexus line to have Gingerbread officially, and it seems that SE has done a much better job this time around.
Agreed. As long as the phone works well, everything else is a bonus to geeks, or doesnt matter to non-geeks. Hope the timescape thing is cool, never used it. But i still feel the need for Google to make their own syncing application like RIM and iOS do. Will make non-gmail peoples' lives easier if they buy an android device.
What Superfrag said in reply to your and DS' posts. There are plenty of geeks who do care, and if they were gonna go with unlocked bootloaders and had enough community support, I might one day get an SE phone as against sticking to the Nexus line when I'm looking for a phone a year or two down the line.
For those who aren't geeks (by your assumption that they could care less about OS versions, bootloaders and such), SE phones should be good enough cos they work smooth on stock with their MediaScape or Timescape or whatever that interface is called. For those who're even dumber, there's always iOS
as evidenced by the American masses ordering large quantities
Whatever reputation SE lost was lost among the geek crowd, the kind that write reviews more than the commoner. So yeah, they do regain a bit of the same if they go the distance to unlock bootloaders. As i said to Superfrag, if the phone itself flies and works well, great.
No, iOS isn't for dumber people. Please tell me an easy way to sync my outlook mail and calendar with Android. No? Or an easy way to sync my existing outlook or windows/OSX address book with Android? No! Please tell me an easy way to sync my existing music collection and apps with my phone without additional work like third party applications? No? Right! U cant broadly term someone who isn't technologically updated as "dumb" Thats a pretty stupid generalization coming from u! There are tons of people and tons of careers where computers aren't paramount nor do they need to be updated with current trends. Just because you and me are in a forum like this and visit engadget etc, that does not put us on some higher pedestal to call others "dumb" People even today make millions legitimately without probably even knowing how to send an email. Do we term them as "dumb" or less intelligent? No
That is not all. Why I say this is a brilliant move is because this is a solution to the problems that carriers/OEMs face with providing warranty services with messed-with phones and hence lock them down completely for everyone. This creates a new avenue where you are giving out your IMEI and hence signing off of your warranties which makes the situation amicable for both sides. So, those who want to use their phones normally can continue to do so but those who want to mess with them don't have to waste time on hacking them and playing cat and mouse games with the OEMs in finding/patching exploits.
Ah, thats the technical explanation. Cool, wasn't aware of this. Ya great move then from SE.
-
His point is simple, your average person does not even know what a bootloader does, let alone knowing what locking/unlocking will do for him.
There are lots of people who dont want to bother much their phones and want to use it as it is from the get go. So all these bootloaders and its unlocking etc will have no relevance for him/her nor will it make any phone manufacturer look good in his eyes if the phone is complete crap! He wants it to work well and work smoothly. Bas!

Hahah, that joke is old but awesome. I remember that thread on macrumors when the first ipad came out LOL was a crazy read. There is something like a "LOL gotcha" in the end btw! But spin as usual, the condescending PC "elitist"

-
Ya rem I told u to check out the toi ipad app! Finally a decent indian newspaper app which isnt jus a mobile browser bundled in the form of an app.
Cricbuzz was coool too. I found cricinfo to b tooo slow to load. Same issue in its iOS app
-
I think the cricbuzz app is so much faster than cricinfo. Cricinfo takes ages to load. Cricbuzz is fast even on a slow edge network and does the job. Plus great ball-by-ball commentary too.
The new Times of India app is simply fantastic. U can get all India news and also choose your default city to get local news. Great interface and again, highly optimised to work well on a edge network too. Way better than using the mobile website.

Guys watch clerks 1 and 2...not popular but over the top hilarious.

Both the clerks movies r quite popular I think.
-
Congrats sufy. 35k? Quite decent! LED/LCD?
-
Thanks guys. I think Shantz solution is the one i'm looking for as I dont want a wifi dependent solution alone. I dont mind plugging in the USB on and off, but the unecessary steps in between was the turn off.
I tried awesomedrop, but it was somewhat slow. Will try wifiexplorer.
-
Guys, is there an easier way to auto mount my galaxy S by jus plugging in the USB and getting it into USB mass storage mode.
Now, after i enable USB debugging (no idea why i need to do that to do a simple file transfer) i have to do too many cumbersome steps
1. Unlock screen
2. Swipe down notifications bar
3. Touch Select to copy/move files
4. In the next screen, touch mount.
Wow! Any way to circumvent this? And of course, after i unplug it, I have to unmount from phone and then it auto starts the media scanning process. Incase I forget a file, i jus screw it and dont bother. Its just too many unnecessary steps. Or am I doing it wrong? Correct me then.

I remember seeing this strip somewhere!
-
Wow, I must say samsung did a pretty awesome job with Gingerbread. I'm running on RFS, and its still performing very well after 5-6 days of usage. Can't wait for the next GB 2.3.3 build.
I would say Incredible S is the phone to get if you dont care about bootloaders and the like. It looks fantastic and is of the right size. Anything above 4" is wayy too big IMO

Thanks Megz and hotshot!

-
Thanks Anshul. Wanted one since ages.

-
@Taz thanks. Damages well, cost quite a bit
. @Roshan thanks bro. I bought it from Helvetica in Express Avenue
@abdul Thanks.
-
^Thanks aman. Actually wanted an old retro looking Piaget, but it wouldn't work as a 24/7 all dressing watch
@Choy thanks bro.
-
Just bought a new watch for myself after 4 years of using my old rado.
Bought an Omega Constellation. Last year's model as I wanted the quartz one and the new ones are all running on wrist movements which seem like a hassle to me.
Simple, sober and classy (IMO of course)

Nice choice Aman! Whens the delivery? White is a brilliant color. its too bad nowadays young guys always take some flashy colors. On the big sedans, white is the way to go followed by black!

^yeah, but if you're jumping to 2.3 from 2.2, you will need to flash the stock rom using ODIN first. The PDA, Phone and CSC files are included in the stock rom package after unzipping.
2. You need to flash the Chainfire's modified Gingerbread kernel with CWM which includes root using ODIN again.
3. After that you need to flash any speedmod froyo kernel via CWM. After that, when u go to recovery, you see the green color CWM (as opposed to the red one when u flash Chainfire's GB kernel)
4. Then flash Juwe's or whoever's custom rom via that CWM.
After this, flashing any future GB roms will be easy.
