    The cooler on 290x is a reference cooler with just 1 fan. Wait till 3rd party cards are released with custom coolers like Sapphire Vapor-x, Gigabyte Windforce 3X, MSI TwinFrozr, Asus DC2T etc.

     

    I completely agree with that bro. I wrote above that there is every possibility that 290x will beat HOF (maybe even an overclocked HOF) once the custom-coolers hit the market. its just the wait of them coming to India and the the Indian price that is breaking the deal for me.

    The review you have linked happened before the R9-290X released. The power consumption on the over-clocked Hall of Fame card itself is higher than the stock AMD R9-290X on Über Mode. Temperature wise, commendable work and credit due for the excellent third-party shroud and cooler system.

     

    The AMD cards have been much better over-clockers this generation than nVidia cards because of the latter binning higher frequency under 'Boost' mode which has not been the case with AMD cards. They do it but not at such an aggressive level.

     

    Also, the performance of the R9-290X still comes close to the over-clocked HOF edition, the stock HOF is behind or ties with it. Almost within the ~5 fps region which is pretty much anyone's game.

    HOF edition, without even overclock, is faster than 290x and TItan both. Metro is exception because of PhysX being enabled on Titan and HOF while not on 290x. With overclock (which I of course will if the need be), this card is almost 20% faster than both (please note that in Crysis 3, they enable Very high spec when they overclocked HOF. That is not the case with Titan or 290x there. They say HOF is the only card which makes Very high system spec playable at that resolution). I love the performance to price ratio of 290x, its incredible! But at this price, its even better on HOF (though I have to admit, warranty not being there is a big loss too!). My major problem with 290x is the heat (cant say power-supply cause HOF is about the same lol). GTX 780s were much cooler at stock anyway, and hence good overclockers. With custom coolers they become even better (as we can see in HOF). 290x is already reaching 95 degrees (in colder countries. In India, especially in summers, it will reach that much sooner, until unless AC is on all the time lol). Even with custom coolers, the overclocking potential might not be that great. Nonetheless, every chance remains that it will be able to beat HOF after custom cooling and overclocking, but that will take a long time to come to India and the price will be at least 50k. So in the end, I guess its between warranty and no-warranty, the wait of custom coolers on 290x and overclocking potential of 290x after that. To me, taking HOF now at cheap seemed a better deal. But I get your point too. Its about being a little impatient too, I guess. lol.

    They said that it will be available in 7-10 days (that was 2-3 days back, so I guess 7 more days now?). In general I guess it should be available in India within 15 days.

    And it is true that after the uber mode, the 290x does little overclocking because of heat. I saw and read a few reviews and none of them did serious overclocking. Now I am not disparaging the 290x, its a steal at that price nonetheless. Hell, I was hell-bent on getting it till a couple of days back. I think I posted that here too. Its just different strokes bro. I am not trolling the 290x.

    Yeah its indeed a risk. But my experience with cards has remained good over the years. I have never had any problem with any graphics card till now. So betting on that. Not to mention Amazon are super customer friendly and if something happens in reasonable time limit, they will accept a return (though I will have to ship). I am hoping nothing of that sort would happen.

     

     

     

    For all its worth, the official warranty is worth the ~4000/- bucks you are spending on it. And about lack of over-clocking potential even the initial batches of GTX780's / 770's were not very responsive, only the advent of custom coolers and shrouds have changed that.

     

    I hope the card reaches you in one piece and provides you with good performance in the coming years.

     

    You mean extra on 290x? I guess. I also understand that true overclocking potential of 290x will only be revealed when custom coolers come. But it will be a long time before these are available in India, and with custom coolers the card will again cost some 50k. Still, you have a valid point.

    I placed order for Galaxy hall of fame GTX 780 on Amazon. I just coudlnt control. The total was coming to 40k, and the card seemed a really good deal at that price. Beats the titan and 290x at stock, overclocks like hell (which the 290x doesnt do, at all!) and seeing how even stock 780 is much higher priced in India (will be about the same after, if, the price drops reflect) and seeing reports that 290x is about 44k in India, it just seemed such a good deal. I hope I did the right thing.

    guru3d mentioned in the last paragraph of their review that they're expecting only reference boards to come out for a while. Living in a country as hot as India and with this card reaching 95 degrees, it's not a good idea to pick up a reference card. They said that custom cooled cards will come around December so possibly late 2013 or early 2014 for India.

     

    I know but I dont want to wait that long :( My 'next-gen' system is ready except the card.

    Besides, my GTX 470 also used to hit 95, and I used it in Rajasthan during summer. I don't really care all that much about heat and noise. I just hope that it comes to India ASAP,

    Expect them by mid-November in seleted outlets, early-mid December you will see it arrive in sufficient volumes and more palatable pricing.

     

    Import options are pretty limited to who you can convince to get the card for you, Amazon has booted international shipping (for now).

    So by selected outlets you mean the big online ones like Flipkart, snapdeal etc. or brick and mortar ones like shops in Lamington (or Chroma?)? ALso, what kind of difference are we talking about between first few weeks and later? Will there be a huge difference? I kinda am dying to get a card cause rest of my system is ready. :(

     

     

    CPUs, MoBos, Gfx cards, always better to buy these three items locally, with warranty.

    I forgot that its a holiday in Mumbai tomorrow. So probably Game4U will not ship it tomorrow either. I wish I hadnt pre-ordered with them. I should have bought it from a local retailer or some other site. Sigh! Lesson learned, never again from Game4u.

    BTW, Weak teams in IPL 2011 are: Punjab, DC and Delhi. It will be fascinating to watch matches between these 3.

    Delhi still has fairly strong batting line up, but DC and Punjab plain suck. Punjab is the worst team this IPL.

I have heard count less rants against muslims, stereotyping them, discriminating them (hello RSS/bjp/shiv sena) even though india has more muslim population than entire pakistan. Fact is, any example that you can give regarding pak's hostility and moronic hatred against india can be equally matched by indian denizens. Its like the console wars.. retards on both sides. you cannot how ever take a small sample and use it to represent the population. Hating their cricket team is fine but wanting the entire nation to rot because it "may" help us is stupid, not the least because it will have adverse effects on india's security.

     

    Aah here comes what I call 'equal-equal', a famous past-time of India's elite. We are the same only, we are 'equal-equal'. We have Shiv-sena/RSS/BJP. When exactly RSS/Shiv Sena or BJP killed anyone in Pakistan? When did they sponsor any terrorist attacks anywhere? When did they announce Jihad on all non-Hindus or anything? Where are the equivalent of Blasphemy laws in India? Did BJP try making any of that sort when in was in govt? Its a shame that our whole elite and so called liberals are all so charged up to hate on RSS and BJP, the only two entities with any notion of nationalism (even though it might be somewhat misdirected, I will admit, and could be better imagined as) in India. I will give raw data, for all the 'equal-equal'-

    there's virtually no difference between the messages sent out by the average Pakistani leader and terrorist groups regarding India - a perfect example are the threat messages sent out last year in the media by politicians and LeT about India and the IWT - they were identical.

     

    How are we equal now? Who did we kill? Who did we declare Jihad against? Hell, when did we even try to solve the Kashmir problem, out internal problem, the way China solved (or rather, subdued the Tibetans) its Tibet problem (by settling population there from other parts. And believe me, it wont be hard. If Art 370 is removed and security conditions remain even moderately safe, Sunni Wahabis in Kashmir, those who mostly oppose India, will be minority within a decade)? Not even BJP, the so called 'extremist' and 'terrorist' party by your standards, even thought about that. A shame that our elite has forgotten to differentiate between nationalism and extremism. I am tired of seeing false 'equal-equal' done by the the elite and wagha candle brigade, without knowing any ground conditions or any fact. For them its oh so important to show that they are not only oh so peaceful, they will go even further by declaring nationalists in India as extremists and bane of the country. Hell, according to them the whole problem lies with Shiv sena and BJP. If only these terrorists Shiv-Sena and BJP will keep quiet, terrorism will end, stability will return, Kashmir problem will be solved and doves will fly on border. Wont it?

    It boggles my mind how easily the peace brigade forgets all the facts about Pakistan society that are right in front of their eyes but will go all out on BJP/RSS/Shiv Sena and what have you, even if only a half-baked unproven allegation is leveled against them (talking about 'they ripped womb of Muslim women in Gujarat by Teesta Javed Stalwad, which was later proven all fabricated and baseless). How do they fail to see that all they are doing is confusing our own policy, our own counters against terror and blunting our own arguments against actual terrorists? But how can you wake someone who is only pretending to sleep? (Edit: I should clarify that I am not accusing you of 'sleeping' or anything. My whole talk is more centered on Indian elite and liberals. I apologize if you felt that I was raving angry at you.)
