^^ Are you connecting over TCP or UDP? I had an issue of not receiving call backs when I was using UDP

what is NFC
?near field communications.. eg. those RFID cards that you use to enter/exit an office/parking lots etc..
Not much useful in India as of now since you won't see widespread public use.. (e.g. for credit card payments etc).. but it is nice to have for personal projects and stuff..
-
well that's pretty good. NFC would have been a neat bonus but that's all it really would be at this point... a bonus. can't really subtract marks from samsung for leaving it out in the indian release.
Word on twitter (from people who attended the launch) is that the Indian version has NFC as well.. Guess they are really treating us as premium market now

http://androidos.in/2011/05/sansung-launches-galaxy-s2-in-india-for-inr-32890/
So, it has finally happened. When we reported yesterday that Samsung is going to launch its flagship Android smartphone Galaxy S2 in India today, a lot of our readers were finding it hard to believe, but here is the official launch.
Samsung today unveiled SGS2 for the India market at a press event in New Delhi. Samsung has priced it at INR 32,890 for the 16GB version and you will able to buy it starting June 3 at any Vodafone store or from June 9 at any retail store.
Samsung also confirmed the specifications of India version of Samsung Galaxy S II, and yes it will have the 1.2 GHz Exynos processor with Super AMOLED Plus display. Those of you waiting for the NFC hardware in the device, I have the disappointing news – Indian version will not feature NFC chip.
Awesome

^^ How much time do you have? Do you know Java? What kind of chat app do you want?
-
i'm guessing you meant transpires

Ah yeah.. Glad that gaurav didn't see that

anyway, none of the recent htc phones have custom roms. i think the atrix only got them because somehow motorola accidentally leaked the stock rom before signing/encrypting it or something like that.
like i said earlier, it would be disappointing if they released tegra2/slcd. surely india, being the fastest growing mobile market in the world, should at least qualify as competitive for them. or were you referring to the smartphone segment only? although i assume that will be growing pretty fast too.
yup smartphone segment only.. it's growing but not even remotely close to what other countries are doing..Other countries already had their mobile revolutions and are going through the smartphone revolution since last few years..India is still in nascent stages in smartphone sector..Mobile revolution here is all about low cost..
Faster growing in budget sector. Frankly today I see more micromax and videocon etc handsets being sold. So many of my non geek colleagues still buy nokia coz that's the only brand they swear by even today.
I am skeptic of android high end smartphones doing well in india for samsung to even consider them for their high end models. A phone like the s2 will easily be priced at 30k+. How many would plonk down that kind of cash for a phone.

is it confirmed that the exynos version isn't coming here?
also, the s2 has already been rooted. big advantage over the sensation.
Not confirmed but that's what was told by Samsung that Exynos version will be NA only.. but we will have the confirmation today i guess.. HTC phones would be rooted as well, the main issue comes for custom ROMs because of the signed bootloader on the sensation.. lets see what perspires there...Even Atrix got custom ROMs..
BTW apart from that it is also not clear whether the Indian version will have SAMOLED+ or SLCD.. that will also become clear today..
How is it that the same phone model has a different component in different regions? Thts like fragmentation within fragmentation...Parag fragmentation.

The reason is that Samsung isn't able to pump out enough Exynos corresponding to the demand. So, they will be selling the exynos version in the most lucrative market (NA) and probably their home (Korea) and a few other areas probably where competition is hot (China/Taiwan?)...
-
I don't know why people in India are so excited over Galaxy S2 when it is launching with Tegra 2 here instead of Exynos.. HTC Sensation should be a much better phone to buy in such a case..

^^ Apart from default mail and k9, only thing that can be suggested is touchdown. But it is not free (quite expensive i must say.. 20$ i think)

yep. keepass is good. I use 1password, but that is because Ive been already using it for over 2 years now and dont want to migrate. I'm not sure which is better though if you are just joining in. 1password or keepass @shantz?
I haven't used 1password so can't really compare but keepass has the advantage of having gazillions of ports (I mean they have it available for almost every OS/device possible) and also it's free, so one can try it first and if it doesn't feel like satisfying all needs, then look at something else. Also, keepass is open source so I feel a bit more safe with the security provided by it compared to relying on claims of a closed client (see what happened to lastpass recently despite all their big claims)..
-
I always use IVG mobile layout....works well for me.
About password storing apps, i DLed "Keeper Password & Data Vault" but hvnt tried it yet. 1password is with 14 days trial, and Lastpass didnt attract much.
@deathstryke: any pointers ??
Use "keepass". (keepass.info is the official site. keepassx.org for linux port). It is awesome, free and u can sync everything through dropbox.
-
Yeah. Plus it runs on mobile devices like the iPod touch which have no bootloaders. Funny.
Edit: or maybe since the dollar is down they dont want these devices undercutting ones in Europe. Farfetched I know

A bootloader is a necessity for almost all devices that run any sort of code. All iDevices for sure have bootloaders..
-
^^ Why are you so happy on getting your speed reduced to half?

-
^^ Yup.. Google takes a lot of steps to control OEM actions but afaik as far as device lockdown is concerned, it isn't being dictated by Google.. Especially when you have SE going the complete opposite way and supporting it officially for all their devices..and again netflix<->lockdown theory has holes because of the N1 and G2 having the netflix app as well..
-
^^ but there is one more thing that confuses me still about the correlation between netflix and bootloader lockdown. Nexus 1, G2 etc have got netflix support as well but without any bootloader lockdown (and without a firmware update as well).
-
Just got myself an android(Galaxy SL).
Please let me know about best apps from following which i can download from market:
1) Mobile Browser
2) Exchange Mail app to configure my outlook mails
Why don't you use the built-in email app for exchange?
Oh, and about the matter of HTC signing or locking the bootloaders, it has nothing to do with Google.
Google doesn't really care whether HTC signs their boot and recovery partitions or not.
Correct.
HTC doesn't care about the minuscule amount of people who won't buy it due to the protection.
I think it has everything to do with Netflix DRM. The recently updated Market allows developers to restrict their apps to particular devices or exclude apps from certain devices.
At the same time this feature was released, Netflix also released with support for HTC devices, some old ones and I'm pretty sure all the new ones as well. Pretty sure it's not a coincidence.
Only one exception ; Nexus S.

HTC will gain a lot more customers if they're the only Android OEM that can play Netflix. That's why at the same time Netflix/Qualcomm announced that it would be releasing the Android version of Netflix for future Qualcomm devices, HTC started signing and protecting their bootloader and recovery partitions.
So maybe the protected recovery and boot partitions is what HTC had to do to get Netflix run on Android? Or for HTC to be the sole OEM with support for Netflix?
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty confident I'm not..
Why would Netflix bother with a locked or unlocked bootloader? Their service is streaming. Doesn't make sense to me.
Netflix probably doesn't care directly but HTC is probably doing it to protect the reverse-engineering of the DRM that has been implemented specifically for Netflix.

Google should simply tie up with Amazon for music. Amazon already is a far better deal than iTunes.
They can't/won't. Amazon already has their own cloud storage/music service up a while back..
-
This whole cloud streaming is fine and dandy, but in real life usage, on the road, using a 3G network, which in all probability is capped around the world, how will you manage. Even if they compress it, you are looking at a download of around 300 500 MB daily assuming you listen to 50 60 songs.
Plus, without a store, I feel it's pointless as you have to still manually upload any song purchased on your system to the cloud. In Amazon, you at least have a store.
Google should start a music store too and then it starts making real sense. Buy any new song on phone, immediately playable from the cloud.
If iTunes gets something out similar (all signs pointing to it) then it would be killer. iTunes is the gold standard for online music and movies. Plus they have a store on phne. That is something thats cool.
Still with capped 3G, the whole purpose is lost. When you get new phone, you sync with your computer. Here, you have to sync with the cloud. Both are time consuming. But ya, you can sync a new phone anywhere around the world,
The assumption is that you will usually be cloaked in a Wi-Fi field.
yup.. I find it good since I can use it at work or at friends' places or when vacationing at home/hotels etc..And anyways, row doesn't have to worry as they fare better than us..
regarding itunes, yes it will be killer and google wants to go the same route but couldn't because they haven't been able to sign the deals with labels so far so had to go this route. But still this approach has its own advantages. You can listen to your own music that you have and not necessarily be tied to a store. Lots of people have music they didnt buy online or buy from other places. Also, this way people like me can use the service even when it is US only
. Not saying that itunes will not have store approach + own music approach. It might very well have it. But am just saying what we get with google music isn't worthless as well.. -
Are there any plan for Beam to Mumbai the fking Hayai is still in the dreams and how does Beam affords such cheap bandwidth ?
Beam is only in hyderabad. They are probably able to afford this because:
1. They have lot of users who do not actually use that much bandwidth
2. They are mostly interested in consumer business and are competitive there. Airtel etc are more interested in corp. business
3. They invest much less in support staff and advertising
4. They lease bandwidth from few guys only and do much less peering as compared to airtel etc (again because beam focuses on consumers who might be ok with downtimes but airtel can't afford any downtime).
5. Finally they HAVE to make a differentiating factor in plans in order to get people choose them over the big players.

^^ Use a VPN na.. I have one of my workstations in US, so I logged in from there and requested. But when I tried from my company's US VPN from my machine here, then also it was working..With that you can even see the movies on youtube

I read on some website that 2.3 has a better improved on-screen keyboard as compared to 2.2 version. It is so different since touch screen fones shall be more user friendly when it comes to typing on screen. and improvements in OS is for battery life also. Are these changes so significant ?
yes 2.3 has a better keyboard but anyways you are going to use swype which is miles ahead of any other soft keyboard so don't worry about that. Also, if you still feel you want to use the GB keyboard, it is very simple to get it. paul from modaco has even uploaded it to android market so you can download and install from there in froyo itself. Regarding battery life, I don't see much difference between froyo and GB.
Also, in last night's IO keynote, Google has mentioned that OHA members (Samsung is one) will gaurantee timely updates for at least 18 months if the hardware is capable to run the new versions. So, you will definitely get the GB updates.
BTW, I requested for a music beta invite but not got it yet. Anyone else had success?

Google Music to stream 20,000 songs for free, launches at I/O later today
- Who doesn't love the word free?
music to siraf aapke yoo ess ke liye hoga
-
Guru ji, one more query. Galaxy sl comes with 2.2 froyo, is it upgradable to 2.3 gingrbrd. And also whats the diff btw these 2 flavours.
I don't think GB update is out yet for sl but you won't miss much between 2.2 to 2.3. For end users, it's mainly UI related things and some performance.. Not much features as such..

shantz, charges plssssssssssss
My plan price is 1500 per month (including taxes, unlike airtel etc where you take a plan for 1200 rupees but after taxes it becomes 1400-1500
). But I paid yearly, so I got 2 months free (12 months for 15000). I'll also get Rs 3000 worth gift vouchers as well, so net cost 12000 for 12 months
