  1. Having high battery usage by "Android OS" of late. Sometimes even higher than the Display itself. It's hurting battery life, definitely taking a few hours off it.

Anybody have any idea how to keep usage by "android OS" down or what could be causing this?

Are you on 2.3.3? Many people have reported this issue and 2.3.4 is supposed to have a fix for this. Some folks have also reported that wiping cache (through recovery) may fix this.

  2. a quote from that article -

Speaking of Jobs, Bannerjee cites him as a hero. He says he has a poster of Steve Jobs in his bedroom, a sticker of the Apple logo on the chair in his office, and once a week he will wear an Apple t-shirt. "I'm a fanboy, Mac-head, whatever you want to call me," he says.

    translation - he's mentally retarded.

Achilles' real name is Sidhhartha Bannerjee? :O

  3. I glanced over. But the general points regarding that hackernews article u posted earlier where they said about UI and HIG requirements in iOS and the tools the SDK provides to maintain symmetry and color etc and the lack thereof in Android which results in relatively less goodlooking android counterparts. See that article Superfrag posted once on his twitter comparing the 2 fb apps for example. And also the point where U can push updates on Android within minutes and u have to wait with crossed fingers in iOS. Thats a -ve for iOS right?

its not meant to flamebait android. From what I could gather, and what my point is, that each store has its own limitations and similar points were echoed by users and developers alike.

And yes, posting a tech2.in.com article is hitting a hammer on your foot :P. Didn't do much background check but I heard about this whole meter down thing on Twitter once.

Yes, and I agree with all the shortcomings Android SDK has vis a vis HIG requirements and much better stock UI elements and a much better UI builder in iOS development. That is why I myself posted the HN article.

But this guy doesn't even touch on those parts :P and hence the reason I ridicule him and Tech2.

  4. So why not comment on the site and let him know!!

I was actually going to paste it there..

Edit: Not going to post it there. Just to post the comment, Tech2 wants to access my facebook information, send me email, write stuff to my wall? And this even when I unchecked the "post to facebook" checkbox. Lol.. like I said, you can't expect any better from Tech2

BTW, read this for more laughs from the same guy http://tech2.in.com/topstuff/mobiletablet-apps-software/chat-with-siddhartha-bannerjee-developer-of-meter-down/190942/0

  5. Experience of Meter Down app developer on both Android and iOS

Pretty much echoes everyone's sentiment on both ecosystems

Did you actually read the article? A few things here and there are correct (to know which you don't even need to be a developer) but there is a lot of crap in there as well.

First, as an article from "a developer's point of view", He wrote a big a*s piece about his "experience" but all he actually states from his experience is "However, when I ported the same app to the Android platform my entire effort took a beating. The Picker view changes its color depending on the handsets. On an HTC device, the Picker view will be green and it turns blue on Samsung. How do you control that!? Open Platform, ahem!"

    1. The picker changes color according to the "color scheme" the phone is using. Otherwise it would look ugly anyways.

    2. Developer can customize the color if he wants

    3. Just one issue and he is ready to write an entire article about it?

    4. He hasn't even published a single app on Android market yet (yes, I searched. Even his MeterDown app is "coming soon") and still a whole article from "a developer's viewpoint" and even commenting on how his updates became immediately available on market? Lies to write an article?

"iOS apps can leverage on killer features like the Accelerometer, 3 axis Gyroscope and proximity sensors."

WHAT? and Android can't? Every android has all the sensors that iPhone has (except Gyroscope which is present in most latest devices though and even for iPhone it is present only in iPhone 4 onwards, so there..)

"iTunes, Mac, and iOS devices all speak the same language. "

err.. excuse me. What does he mean by "speak the same language"? And what about windows then, they speak "a different language"? So, windows users certainly must hate iPhone then?

"In my opinion, the iOS apps are successful not just because of the dev support and simplicity of coding but also because of its ecosystem"

Dev support? Simplicity of coding? Those are highly subjective notions. For someone like me, wrapping my head around Objective C was eons more difficult as compared to Java. And coding for Android is actually much simpler because you have the largest example library available, the OS itself.

lol, looking at the website "tech2" you should have known that you can't expect them to do any better. This guy is actually a writer/photographer (check his bio) who made an app which took 2 weeks to create graphics and probably 2 days to code and he is out giving expert advice/comments on the developer centric aspects of the two platforms.

  6. Thanks !

But as stated before, I'll be buying only from Letsbuy (will be using a 1000 Rs voucher). And they are carrying X-Mini 1.1, II & Max II. Apart from X-Mini, Altec Lansing iM227. So need to choose between them. Had they been carrying iM237, would have bought it eyes closed but damn iM227 :wallbash: .. There's no info about it anywhere ! :suicide:

Isn't Max II supposed to be better because of the whole dual speakers stereo thing ? Also read about people complaining on Amazon that one of the 2 speakers in Max II goes dud after a couple of months or so !

If those are your choices, then take Max II. Stereo sound is good. Another benefit is that they have internal battery and can be charged over USB, so no worries about fiddling around with cells or anything. About speaker going bad, I have had them for around 5-6 months and so far no issues.

  7. Oi ! How are X-Mini Max II ? Heard they are the better ones among X-Mini.

    Good VFM for 1.5k ?

Out of all, I like max II and Happy. They are pretty good as far as sound quality can be expected from such tiny speakers. Good for a small room without too much ambient noise. Happy has slightly better bass but it is mono (but has added advantage of sd card slot with which you can use it as a standalone mp3 player). What is your usage going to be like?

Edit: btw, you can check this review of x-mini happy speakers that I did some time back http://tech.shantanugoel.com/2010/11/28/review-of-x-mini-capsule-happy-speakers.html

  8. Hey guys,

Need some advice on general use laptop/MP3 speakers.

Was thinking of getting a 2.1 before but the recent portable ones caught my eye, specifically the X-Mini II & Altech Lansing iM227/237.

Now the catch is I can buy only from Letsbuy (have a 1000 rs coupon which I want to use).

    So which one's a better buy ?

Also googling gives lots of results for iM237 (unavailable @ Letsbuy) but virtually no reviews for iM227 (which are available @ Letsbuy !).

Kinda confused regarding the difference between the 2.

    Plus iM227 or X-Mini II ?

Usage will primarily be for music and movies, f/b podcasts.

    Thanks.

I have the full range of x-mini speakers.. They are fine if your laptop speakers are crappy and you want them on the move but they will definitely not replace even a cheap 2.1 set in sound quality.

  9. ^^ I use tunewiki for music. But poweramp is pretty good.

For video, Samsung has added extra codecs otherwise Android player doesn't play all formats. You can try using VPlayer. It is as good as (if not better) Rockplayer and it's on the market so no jumping through hoops.

  10. How is apple protecting its interest by blocking Google Nav? I was stuck with mapquest for almost 2 years now. End of the day we users miss out on awesome apps because of control freak apple.

Not letting competitive apps is lack of confidence in my books.

Also you make it sound like app store service is end of all. Don't forget apple takes out hefty 30% from every app earnings. Plus for any new developer initial investment is higher as opposed to that of Android. You need a mac to do an apple app, go figure. On top of that you pay for iOS Developer program $99, every year.

Exactly. So much for openness. Apple has done it several times. Reject an app for no good reason. Then sheepishly update the application development guideline behind the scene.

True. Apple's app store is good for devs but it is not without its own pitfalls. You can spend a fortune and lot of time/effort on developing an app and then Apple can just reject it on their whims and fancies. Even if your app is accepted the first time, it can be removed at any time or if you provide an update they don't like. Even otherwise, you have to keep waiting without updates for your apps to be reviewed. If there is a critical bug discovered, forget about releasing a fix asap. Lots of devs are complaining about these issues.

But of course, if your app is accepted, then in most cases, as it stands right now, it will bring more money in app store instead of market.
