I have a slightly different opinion on this. India has a problem with MRP system. The margins on individual items isn't really great for retailers. Companies don't care about the upkeep retailers have to spend on before stamping that number on their products. A 5rs pack of ParleG nets at most 50paise to a retailer, that retailer can be a small Kirana shop in a posh neighborhood or a tea stall in small village. I have seen people going to these remote places like on hilltops and expecting things at MRP, nothing wrong but they don't realize that the added cost for that retailer to open a shop there, get there everyday, make a living out of that tiny earning. US has no concept of MRP, RRP is guidance and not printed on stuff every time. You can buy a pack of cigs for 10$ in supermarket or get it for 25 from a shop near a famous beach. That is not getting conned, that's just paying more for convenience....
