  5. very useful. thnx a lot dude :naughty: although am not buying till next year.

Where in chennai do you buy from? that shop in spencer plaza? or itchy strt?

the biggest guy in chennai, for photographic stuff is FotoTrade in Wallajah Road, next to RadioWareHouse. This guy, the owner R. C. Jain, is one of the biggest distributors on the country! You name a lens and brand and either he has it or can get it for you in a few days. Only hassle is he has a lot of grey stuff, so if you want a less popular lens which he does not have in stock, with bill, with warranty... Then it may take a few days! He easily does business of a couple of lakhs or more in a day!!!!!

Darn... But he stocks accessories also in great variety! Can you believe I have seen a Manfrotto/Nogen Super Clamp with him??? I want to buy that!!!!

His prices vary few hundred ruppees from day to day so I have found it best to get it written down from him, the first time and check in another few days in case the price has gone down.

When you call up a dealer for something and they say they will check and get back, this is the guy whom they call..Not Nikon India! He even offered to have my stuff delivered to Kolkata when I said I was travelling...

  6. Hey athek, great thread! Now that both my laptops ( office and personal) have broken down... Am looking for something at home... Without internet at home, I think am suffocating!

Just one question - the sub25k pc, it will run Photoshop cs2 also if not properly, then at least decently right...?

Also I hope diablo 3 which is coming and Warcraft will run without any problems!

  7. hmm. I have been wanting a prime lens for meself for a few years now. I love shooting without flash and need a faster lens for that. All I have right now is the standard 18-55 that came with my D50.

18-55mm Ed 1 is a great lens...total VFM, actually all three are...if you got some money, go for the 50mm...that extra focal length is good...else the 35mm is there always...

if you want to check out a review, check these out

    ByThom - 50mm f1.4G review

DPR Nikon SLR Talk - 35 mm images...what it can do

lemme know which one you do buy

  8. nice dude! good choice of lens; did you buy it after looking at the 50mm one? Also, I wonder if Nikon is more famous in India versus Canon in entry-level DSLRs.

yes...i did....agonized a lot over the 35mm vs 50 mm...ultimately it boiled down PRICE and how much focal length do i need...

see 35mm (in DX) multiplied by a conversion factor of 1.5 (actually 1.54 i think) for film cameras actually gives the focal length as 50mm effectively, which is great for portraits...plus the construction of the lens is as good as the 50mm...so small, sharp, fast and cheap! and stupid Nikon underestimated the demand for this fantastic piece of equipment...its one of the best DX lenses available so when i got my hands on one, i snapped it up!)

50 mm also i will buy (primes are fun  ) after i get my hands on the 18-105mm VR DX lens (actually i would like the 16-85mm but cant afford it right now as i want to spend money on strobist stuff...damn Nikon for putting the prices of the speedlights way beyond the average consumer and for taking the SB-800 out of the market thereby forcing people to go for the SB-900 which is great no doubt, but expensive...!

Nikon is more popular, not only in India and not only for entry level DSLR's, though its prices are more expensive than Canon, because of

    1. support structure...some of the best and fanciest photogs out there use Nikon stuff (lens, flash and more)

    2. Compatibility...you can pick up a ten year old lens and it will still work on a DX body today though with some reduced functionality...unlike Canon which broke the backward compatibility when they moved onto the new generation of camera's

Ultimately, it boils down to preference and whether old stuff can be reused or not...

  9. i got a Nikon D40 dslr + AF-S 35mm f1.8G lens (with bill and warrranty) + Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW bag + photography ebook, latest one, on flashes by Joe McNally...

plus planning to get a lightstand (cheap one) + Vivitar 285HV flash and other odds and ends!

  10. two more thoughts -

    1. PM alerts send to mail id -

generally this alert mail contains the name of the person sending the PM and a link which you can click to take you to the site.

it would be great if the same alert email also contained the body of the message i.e. content! that way i know the person who is sending the PM and what he is sending the PM about! when i am in office, i cannot access the site, or travelling, an email alert with a msg would still be a great way to prioritise...so i know that when i head home, the first thing i need to do is reply to so and so PM's or need to head over to a cyber cafe for some GIing...the pull factor anyway remains because you have to come to the site to reply!

    2. RSS Feeds -

nowadays i have been using a lot of RSS to pull feeds and stay updated on my fave sites/happenings...GI apparently does not seem to have too much happening on this front (which is a wrong perspective because the forums rock!)

could the forum posts (any new ones made/created) could they be updated to show up on the RSS? not replies, but only new threads...that way i have much more content to surf from my mobile...plus the link can bring me to the full thread where i can check out the replies also and see whats going on! web 2.0 at its best! i have seen techenclave using this mode for pushing content out to its readers...

A query - Is the email notification turned on for all threads i have replied, once i check the box?

  11. i was thinking looking at the great e-pen** thread, maybe we can have a thread (without fanboyism) where we list all the salient good and bad points for the Xbox , PS3 and the Wii from the perspective of a Indian gamer. Only facts/actual experiences...no rumours!

that would be a good FAQ for people to start with, who do not have a console yet but have joined GI in anticipation of buying one!

agreed there are places on the net where you can get the dump on any of these...but what is missing is a clear coincise perspective on how it happens only in India! e.g. like when cycle put forth the replacement/warranty scheme of Xbox in India which is miles ahead of what happens in US or elsewhere...that certainly was a very strong point! or like PSN (major unfriendly) vs XBL (expensive but actually allows you to buy stuff)

@Obaid bhai i would rather not speculate...but they seem to be pretty popular going by the number of the things they have in stock.
