After a lot of discussion on IVG and a lot of researching, I have ended up getting myself an HP Envy Touchsmart 15 laptop

Looks great and the touchscreen is very responsive. So far the only complaint is that the screen is not as premium as the rest of the laptop.
Also, got a laptop bag free with the purchase:
Sorry for the poor camera quality...

Thanks alpha. However after looking at all options, now I have decided that HP Envy it is

Getting it with 3 years warranty
-
Does it have any advantages over the Lenovo Y510p / Y50?
Considering it has an inferior GPU chipset at the same price-point. Also, the Lenovo notebooks are lighter to boot.
I find it aesthetically much better than the Lenovo laptops. Lenovo's laptop is heavier than this and has only 2 USB 3.0 ports while this HP laptop has 4 USB 3.0 ports. Also, as per this link, the Y510P is not even full HD
Other than this, I feel most features are neck and neck. GPU chipset is perhaps inferior but I don't think that much of a difference would mean a lot to me since I won't be using it for any intensive purposes.

Which model of the Envy series you going for?
^^^
Please give your feedback

Sorry I guess... but just because I called y510 ugly, it doesn't mean that I mean gaming laptops are ugly
. Some of them are drop dead gorgeous. But yeah I mostly require it for business use and slight casual gaming. Spoke to a person with HP Envy and he has said it's quite good for browsing, youtube, multitasking, and has a decent battery life of 3.5 hours. I can do moderate gaming on it on medium settings without much issues. Hence, I guess I am going to go ahead with that.
Thanks for all the suggestions people.
-
Dude y510p is gorgeous. Or you just don't like red backlit?
Yeah don't like the red backlight at all. Plus, I somehow just don't like the outer cover of the laptop either. It doesn't look premium at all for me, which is justified for that price. But yeah, I guess different people... different taste.
-
I never said I want a gaming laptop dude... no need to use words like 'ignorant.' The laptop is ugly and that's my opinion. As I said in my first post, I would want a decent laptop which can play 2008-10 games and that is fine with me. Don't need to go for those ugly as gaming laptops for which I have no use.
I guess HP Envy 15 it is.

Had the option while purchasing laptop last year. Didn't go for it not only because hp uses cheap parts but also lacked integrated graphic, dvd writer and 755m 2gb ddr5 in y510p seemed much better choice overall.
Hmm y510p is definitely a good deal in terms of specs but I just don't see myself using such an ugly laptop

@Draca: Saw your list. Most are not available in India and some of the ones which are don't have full HD display
I wish Kirabook/ Samsung Ativ Book were available in India.Leaning more towards HP Envy atm... no one in the reviews has complained about performance issues due to usage of cheap parts
-
THIS....Never came across an hp lappy (including Envy) which doesnt use cheap parts. They always heat up even when idle. Total BS.
1. Whoa again there buddy, old games dont mean they wont tax your hybrid. Any game 4GB+ will Tax your hybrid. Period. Maybe even Counter Strike Source (2GB) will tax after 20min.
2. I gave you the Battery Life list in my before post, those all are mostly latest hybrids. Didnt you check them?
@ point 1: Hmm, well I guess Sony vaio flip 15 is out of the question now as it's mostly out of stock. So don't need to worry about that.
@ point 2: checking now

Okay guys, after a lot of searching... I have come across this laptop. While it doesn't have a tablet style feature of turning the screen 360 degrees but it seems quite powerful with the graphics card and the i7 processor. Please have a look. I think this seems to be my best option
As per reviews, the only issue is the click buttons on the touchpad and the viewing angles. Has anyone used this machine? If yes, please give feedback.
-
^ Lenovo has the Yoga series or some such.
HP also has offerings although never seen them.
But Yoga series laptops look really ugly... that is one major issue
-
1. Whoa, didnt u get it when I told u about my experience with my lappie. With that hybrid notebook, yes u can play games BUT not more than 30min, IT WILL BURN. Notebooks dont have a powerful fan or v.good thermal dissipation stuffs. Maybe even 30min is a hot issue, u might have to reduce it to 20. You can ask your office colleges who have cheap notebooks and went though heat issues without even gaming.
2. 3 yrs warranty is not that costly.1yr warrnt costs 2000Rs,while extended warranty of 2yr costs 2000Rs. SO, only 4k for waranty for 3yrs, not that much costly, rathr cheap.
3. Yes, it will receive Win8 updates. As, Win8 is by MS not sony.
Yes, it looks Sexy, gorgeous BUT dont forget, its a devilish thing too. We look at a sexy hot gal and we lose our mind, DONT.
If Sony has shut down sales, then that also means getting pc components might be an issue. What if your hdd crashes, it might take month to receive a new one. About this issue, you can check with a Sony service centre and ask them on call or in person.
Here you go:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/680649/735m-in-vaio-flip15-throttling/
Thanks a lot. I have seen those reviews and quite surprised that frame rates start crashing 10-20 mins in to the game. I guess playing old games will not cause this issue as they won't be that taxing on the resources. However, some issues like the fan not starting are quite major. I called up Sony Centre who said they would arrange to get the model by today evening. However, they just called me 10 mins back saying that the laptop is out of stock and would take around a week or more to come.
Are there any hybrid laptops like this that one can refer and which is below 90k? I really love the feature of making it in to a tablet as it will be handy in airplanes and in general travelling...
-
I checked out the Vaio Fit 13A yesterday and was very impressed by it. I have checked online that the laptop division is being shut down but warranty will be provided for 1-3 years. Moreover, I am getting this laptop at 70K with 3 years warranty... and this laptop has a digitizer support as well.
I have checked reviews of the Core i5 4200U processor and the Nvidia GT 730M card and it's quite alright for medium-settings gaming as well and it can run 2008-10 games on high settings which is one thing I was looking for. Battery life is around 4 hours.
I feel that the only reason this laptop is being sold at this price is because Sony is trying to clear out its stock. As long as I am getting a 3 year warranty, I am quite happy and I feel I will be buying that Vaio Fit 15A today. Even if the company looking after it is only in Japan at the moment, Sony will have legal obligation to provide after-sales support as it is still selling its laptop at this moment.
Thanks Draco for suggesting this laptop to me and a big thanks to everyone else for their suggestions. Really it was a big help.
One thing I would like to know: even if Sony Vaio shuts down its laptop business, the existing laptops will receive Windows 8 updates right?
-
Dude of course I am using your comments as a reference since you guys know your stuff... I am not taking it as gospel or anything.
I have seen a lot of videos regarding Vaio Flip 15 and I am quite impressed by it... you guys also have seen its reviews and stuff and hence I was asking you guys for suggestions.
Only problem is the Vaio Flip 15 is not available on display as per Sony Centre. I can only order it and buy it but can't see it on display... hence I need to be sure about it.
-
I think they use same mirror in y510 too and same lid too.
Checkot live tomorow
EDIT: Okay saw that engadget review. Well then screen is bad.
Saw ur Zenbook, its costly becuz it has SSD. I dont think u need SSD.
Vaio Flip 15 seems to be a good option at 70k and has got good reviews... you feel that's the best option?
-
Also had a good look at the Sony Vaio Flip 15 and it seems great. The price is also great at 70k. I will try and have a look at it tomorrow...
-
The base Y510p with a 4th Gen Core i5 / i7 should be great for your in that case.
Okay, so here are your options...again
1. Lenovo Y50 and Y510. Major difference: Y50 has GTX860, Win8.1, better sound while Y510p has GTX770, Win 8, Dual Microphone and Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). Decision is upto you, check at store live.
Checked out reviews of the Lenovo Y50 and it seems quite big and also has the number pads on the keyboard
. Also as per reviews, it has a pretty bad viewing angle and the screen is literally like a mirror with a lot of glare issues. -
Too expensive in my opinion, might as well pick up a Mac Air if you are going into that territory.
Don't want Mac though
-
I came across this ultrabook and it seems that it would suit my needs perfectly... good battery life, Full HD display, touchscreen, ability to play old 2008-10 games, 13.3" screen.
What do you guys think about this? I think it's available in India as I saw it on the Asus India website but unable to find out its pricing

Just checked one review site where the price is around 95k.. Hmm
@Draka: Yeah, I saw the Toshiba R930 and it has good specs... but it looks really bad

Also, yeah Lenovo Y510p is a good option too...
-
Well dude, these are your options 4k + HD = Ultra HD, 2k+HD=FHD
Toshiba: Thats the top model, as Alpha said, R9 265 aint worthy enough. In US, starting at $1399
Asus: No Ultra HD yet
Lenovo: I would start with a quote 'This happens only in India'. Well my point is, Lenovo used Ultra HD in Y50 but in India, its absent. So, here are awesome laptops(the only ones that fit your fantasy) from US website.
a) Lenovo Y50 with GTX 860M 2-4GB, hybrid 8GB SSHD, starting at $1300
Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro at 3k resolution Multi-Touch, 13.3", 128-512 SSD, No discrete graphics, at $1000c) Lenovo Y50 Touch FHD, 15", GTX 860 2GB, 8GB SSHD, at $1369 only
Scratch your head

If you cant get those US ones, then I guess your only option is to go for Toshiba
Once again, just because I mentioned that I liked the ultra HD part for Toshiba.. it doesn't mean that the laptop must be of 4k or ultra high res quality !
Full HD (1920*1080) resolution is the requirement for me and I am happy with a full HD laptop too as long as it is fast and I would prefer a touch screen but again, it is not mandatory.
I will be buying from India itself. So please give some more options

-
Touchscreen would be preferred but it's not a necessity, as mentioned in my original query. Touchscreen could be good for windows 8.1 related apps
-
Thanks a lot with the suggestions.
@Alpha: Basically I wanted to put the gaming query to just get a brief idea about the power of the laptop. I will mostly be using the laptop to play old games like 2008-10 games which are available dirt cheap on PC. I don't really game much on PC otherwise. So I guess these games will run fine on the laptop. Good to know that I can make texts larger to avoid the issue of unreadable texts at very high resolutions.
@Draca: Ya, although there are many 40k-50k laptops but none of them have a full HD display. So this is a major issue. Even the Flipkart list suggested by Alpha did not have many computers with Full HD display and the ones Full HD were around 80k which makes me feel that I should rather go for the Toshiba laptop instead which is just 6k more. Also, I can't wait at all as my laptop is busted. So purchase has to be made this week.
Please help.

I'm surprised no one has posted in this thread for such a long time.
Anyway, I had been planning to buy a laptop for a while but never got around to it as my work was more or less being done on my old Dell XPS M1530. However, now the HDD of that laptop is gone and I am done with repairing its components. So now I have decided to finally get on with buying a new laptop.
I mainly use it for emailing, writing documents, watching movies now and again, browsing, youtubing, etc. I require a laptop that has a good battery life, has a screen size of 13" minimum and 15" maximum, at least a full HD display, good RAM/ graphics for smooth operations, and preferably a touch screen. My budget is 75k. However, I came across this laptop recently which seems pretty amazing.
Toshiba Satellite P50t-B Y3110
What do you guys feel about that? I know that it exceeds the budget but a 4k resolution seems quite appealing. The only problem I feel is that the text may seem almost unreadable at a resolution of 3840*2160 and hence I would anyway have to lower the default resolution... is there any workaround for this? Also, the above laptop has a graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 M265X (2GB Dedicated Graphics). Is that good enough for playing the latest games on a good setting? Do let me know.
Other than this, what other laptops/ ultrabooks would you guys suggest. I would mainly prefer laptops but can have a look at ultrabooks too.
I would prefer a Windows based laptop and do not have any preference related to companies; only condition is that the laptop shouldn't be of Dell brand !
Please do give suggestions guys.
