It is full screen (1080p). I have yet to see a movie which leaves black bars on top and bottom (i.e rips may have it, but proper blu rays don't as they are resized for 16:9 displays).
Not true. Many movies are shot in a 2.35:1 ratio and transferred without cropping to Blu Ray (this is how it should be. Cropping takes away too much). These flicks will show black bands on a normal HDTV. There are a many, many flicks which exhibit black bands on Blu Ray.
