  1. selling a laptop. wanted to know how should i clean it completely before handing it over to buyer. how to delete all your files permanently and safely. also if all this is possible without deleting windows. by permanent deletion i mean, person is unable to use data recovery tools to recover my pc.

    please help!!!

Boot this from CD, wipe HDD, reinstall OS.

  2. Okay, will look for a Gigabyte mobo as well.

More info : I should opt for a mobo with the 970/990 chipsets as only those will be supported by upcoming Piledriver processors. 970 chipset ones are reasonably priced compared to 990, so that is a plus point.

And guess what just showed up in stock at flipkart : http://www.flipkart.com/amd-3-5-ghz-am3-phenom-ii-970-processor/p/itmd2ryskbzjkbvb?pid=PSRD2RYRHKYVXGKH&ref=227fa999-a301-437a-9710-6f70fcb12ed1 . This will fit my existing mobo... and is a quad core. Is it worth the 7k odd?

  3. ^Due to this, I am contemplating the FX 4100 or 6100 as well (if there is a significant price difference). But all signs point to the FX8120. Plus, I can use a good cooler, OC it and get better performance than the 8150 stock (which is about 2.5k costlier).

And yeah, even I'll probably keep a couple of cores disabled while OCing to get maximum performance while keeping voltage, temperature and power consumption in check.

Now, motherboard. AM3+ compatible mobos which support 125W processors start at 5k. I prefer Asus and others in a decent price range are from Gigabyte and Biostar. Any recommendations for those or should I stick with Asus? Which of the following?

As for RAM : which of the following should I opt for?

  4. So far, the cores dont mean jack when it comes to gaming.

Nah man, some games really stress out the CPU cores (like GTA4 or BF3).

Did a bit of reading up on FM1 and AM3+ . FM1 have GPU inbuilt so good as a standalone budget gaming system. But regarding future upgrades, Bulldozer will be replaced by Piledriver which is also the AM3+ socket. So that is good keeping future upgrade possibilities in mind. So I will go for AM3+ based CPU and mobo.

  5. This is why I am discussing here, to get more insight into it all.

As for upgrade, my first instinct was to get a new CPU as I mentioned. But I am unable to find quad or more AM3 based chips anywhere.

Everything has been replaced by AM3+ or FM1 . What is the difference between processors based on these sockets (performance wise)?

  6. @Ambar : Presently a lot of games are utilising 4 cores. So it'll only increase with the next iteration. And the biggest leap in processors in recent years has been the addition of cores for true multi-tasking/multi-processing. Two years ago, 2 cores were (mostly) fine but today, my CPU is a huge bottleneck. If I could get my hands on a quad core AM3 socket CPU I would upgrade just that component as that makes economic sense.

Judging by sale threads on Erodov/TE, I have come to the conclusion that GFX cards are way easier to sell/upgrade and in most cases, within warranty. I'm on the lookout for good deals on GFX cards there, with the idea of being able to sell it off in the near future for a minor loss and invest in a better card (as suits my gaming demands).

But given that I am willing to buy new components : I would prefer to go for 6 cores minimum just to avoid the hassle of a CPU bottleneck a while down the line. As I said, if GPU is a bottleneck, it is usually easier to sell of the old one and buy a new/used one. But upgrading to a good combo is always costly, selling off existing combo is tougher, and getting a used one which is competitive is a rarity.

For CPU, mobo and RAM I need good suggestions. 6 cores minimum, even 8 if it is well priced. I do not intend to do SLI so single slot mobos are perfectly fine by me. And RAM should be good (gaming performance wise).

  7. Regarding CPU+Mobo+RAM.

CPU : I would prefer 6 cores or more, so that 2-3 years down the line I don't get bottlenecked by it. Upgrading this entire combo is a PITA and costly. I have zero knowledge of Intel chips at this point, and in AMD I really like the FX 8120, gives me 8 cores at 3.1GHz stock.

Mobo : Zero idea, but if I go for the FX8120 I would need a mobo that supports 125W CPU

RAM : 8GB should be good. I've heard plenty good things about GSkill, and Corsair I know is as usual decent (with best warranty).

Please go ahead and give suggestions, comments, etc. The sooner a final combo is decided, the sooner I'll make some dealer(s) on SP Road very happy. Although I'm totally fine with ordering components online, as long as the price is fair.

  8. So when I flashed CM10 on my Note and later tried flashing the PA (CM9) zip file, I got an update script error. So basic question, if I flash any CM10 based ROM and later wish to go back to CM9, what are the safe and quick steps?

Should I flash a 'safe' kernel first, reboot recovery and then proceed?

Or are there some other steps?

  9. Franco is utter crap on GNote. Plus the franco guy is an egotistical dickhead.

    Step1. Let CM10 stabilise.

Step2. Let Imilka merge CM10 with Paranoid code.

    Step3. Flash and forget.

Anyhow, only kernel I tried was Thor. Never seemed stable. Heard good things about Speedmod too.

  10. would building a caby out of wood be a good option ?

Um, not sure. Getting the specifications right would be a nightmare. And short-circuit / fuse blown, though a rarity, would not be handled too well by wood.

  11. True Grit - 8/10

The Big Lebawski - 9/10 - Havent laughed like this for some time.

Bucket List - 7/10 - Freeman and Nicholson. Nuff said.

Seen the first and third one on the big screen.

And The Big Lebowski - what took you so long to watch such a gem. Man, I feel like watching it again now...

  12. Get 5850 for 5k and PSU now and then upgrade everything later when next gen comes.

    Best option

Okay, now waiting for the 5850 guy to reply to my PM.

And on Erodov, some dude bought a 4870 for 3200 (a deal I missed out on, my bad) and is now offering to sell it to me for 4200. Dafuq?

  13. Okay, so what was being suggested : Get a used 48xx or 58xx card within 5k presently. And later on upgrade GFX,CPU+Mobo+RAM entirely (selling off all existing components). Correct?

    I'm getting a 4870 for 3k and a 5850 for 5k (this one is under warranty).

  14. ^^ $5000 p/m is awesome .... my day job doesn't earn me that much .... can you link me to this guy - koush ? His IVG id / email id, anything u know of ? and what was the app he made ?

I was referring to Koush = Koushik Dutta . Not on IVG, but you can tag his G+ account and get in touch with him there. Or on XDA.

He is the developer of Clockworkmod recovery, and for that alone he has the blessings of millions of Android users.

  15. ^Paid apps do make money, but for that you have to make your app popular (free version with limitations, paid version no limitations).

Another way is to have a free version with ads, and a paid version without ads. AFAIK, a decent amount of money comes from the ads alone.

I remember Koush had developed an app from which he later removed the ads as he felt they were ruining the experience. And he mentioned that he had been earning $5000 monthly from that app (due to ads). Now that is a very very good amount for a single developer built app.

  16. Well, I have little knowledge of NVIDIA series so can't really measure which one of NVIDIA's offerings compares to the 6870. Pricewise both are same.

As long as the card is good, I do not have any inclination towards either AMD/NVIDIA. Even this one looks good - http://www.flipkart.com/zotac-nvidia-geforce-gtx-560-ti-oc-1-gb-gddr5-graphics-card/p/itmd4uwpxxgqygfy . And 5yr warranty (easier to sell off later :P ).

Of course, if a certain used 460 was available for really cheap...

Edit : I've been trying to get 4850 / 4870 from Erodov : missed 3 deals in last month :wallbash: . Trying to get a 4870 512MB for less than 3k (lets see what the guy on Erodov replies to my PM...).

  17. you should invest in a cheaper GPU if you plan to invest later on Proc + Mobo. Usually as a thumb rule, upgrade these three things together, or else at that time your video card will be a bottleneck.

Buy a second hand card amd/nvidia and save the cash for the upgrade later

I'm getting a 6870 for 10k (2nd hand, but bought in June, so nearly 3 yrs warranty remaining). A new one costs around 12.5k or so.

The way I see it, it is easier to upgrade a GFX card as it is a single item. Because it is way easier to sell off any old graphics card as compared to selling off a CPU+Mobo+RAM.

So I'm thinking I should buy a card of choice this week. Then, a couple of months for research and then invest in a solid CPU+Mobo+RAM combo. So that maybe 2-3 years down the line, that combo will still hold me in decent stead and I'll just have to upgrade my GFX card then. What say?

    Immediate decision

GFX : 6870 as it offers pretty good performance and doesn't cost too much.

PSU : Seasonic 520W should be decent (It goes upto 600+ watts while still retaining 80+ efficiency). It was for less than 4k on Flipkart last week (now it is 4200+, my bad on not ordering then itself).

    Near future decision

CPU : I'm wowed by the FX8120 black edition. That should last me a decent time I should say. It has double the cores recommended for most of today's games. At least a 6core proccy.

Motherboard : Don't have the slightest idea. I guess a decent board that supports the CPU (wattage wise) should be fine enough.

There's something about this that just wowed me (saw it yesterday being assembled, and I am in love  ).

    IMG_0095.jpg

  18. How's a 6870 for gaming (BF3/MaxPayne3) at 1080p on med/high settings?

And would my existing proccy (Athlon X2 240 - dual core 2.80 GHz) be much of a bottleneck for most of today's games?

I want to delay mobo+proc upgrade for a little later (couple of months maybe) and was considering picking up a GFX card + PSU in the meantime.

  19. Oh btw, unrelated but Google-related. They've gone and turned my university campus, Georgia Tech, into some kind of Google-themed campus trying to emulate Google's office for the filming of "The Internship" starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

Not yet done gloating I see.

  20. Okay, so am planning to upgrade my PC.

    Current configuration :

    Asus M4N 68TM

    AMD X2 240

    Corsair 2x2 GB DDR3 1333

    Radeon HD 4670 1GB

I wish to be able to play most upcoming games (GTA5, MoH:Warfighter) and eventually Battlefield 4 with reasonable framerates at 1920x1080.

My initial idea was to purchase only a GFX card, but I am guessing a dual-core CPU would not be enough. Correct me if I am wrong.

Now I could upgrade my CPU alone, but the AM3 socket quad-cores are out of stock everywhere. Only option is to buy used or import (that would cost around 6-7k for a decent one).

    1. Should I invest in just the CPU (probably importing), like a Phenom II X4 series? In such a case, is the mobo+RAM fine enough?

    2. Or, invest in a new mobo+CPU+RAM and sell off the existing set to offset some of the cost (considering everything is still under warranty, 2 yrs old)?

Taking option 2, what would be an ideal mobo+CPU+RAM combo as of today. I want VFM, budget is around 10k. Among AMD/Intel which is better today, I have no idea so info on that would be nice.

And the million dollar question, which GFX card? Based on this, I will decide power supply (I'm decided on Seasonic S12 II Bronze 520W for now).

I am totally fine with buying used components as long as at least 1yr warranty is still remaining.

While on the topic, I saw an 8-core AMD black edition processor yesterday, was so tempted to build a rig around that... but better sense prevailed.

  21. congo piper bro , y u need hard rive with non veg sticker , when already married :P send it to me :P

btw from where you got the case i need one for myself :P

Lol at your first question/assumption... :P

And I got the case locally (from SP Road), but you can get it from eBay for around 300 bucks.

  22. Forgot to post this one (read it a few days ago).

So Google decided that Nexus Q in its current form is not a very marketable device. While they redo some of the design/manufacturing, they have decided that those who'd put enough faith in the device to pre-order it, would be getting theirs for free. Yes, free.

“We have an important update about your Nexus Q pre-order.

When we announced Nexus Q at Google I/O, we gave away devices to attendees for an early preview. The industrial design and hardware were met with great enthusiasm. We also heard initial feedback from users that they want Nexus Q to do even more than it does today. In response, we have decided to postpone the consumer launch of Nexus Q while we work on making it even better.

To thank you for your early interest, we’d like to extend the Nexus Q preview to our pre-order customers and send you a free device. If you had other items in your order, your credit card will be charged for those items only.

Your Nexus Q will be on its way soon and you will receive a notification and tracking number from Google Play when it ships.

    The Nexus Q Team”
