  1. Steam's Record of 2011 Announced

Steam has announced today, their full record results of the year 2011.

    Here are the results:

During 2011 the platform grew to offer over 1,800 games to over 40 million accounts. Year-over-year unit sales increased by more than 100% for the seventh straight year, and during the 2011 Holiday Sale Steam's simultaneous user number eclipsed the 5 million player mark.

Meanwhile Steam doubled the amount of content delivered in 2011 vs. 2010, serving over 780 Petabytes of data to gamers around the world. To meet the increasing demand for games and services on the platform, the Steam infrastructure more than doubled its service capacity and a new content delivery architecture was deployed to improve user download rates.

Over 14.5 mil copies of Steamworks games were registered during the year, a 67% increase over 2010. Steamworks titles shipped during 2011 include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution , and more. Since the suite of services was released three years ago, Steamworks has shipped in over 400 games.

"Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Support for in-game item trading prompted the exchange of over 19 million items. Support for Free to Play (FTP) games, launched in June, has spurred the launch of 18 FTP titles on Steam, with more coming in 2012. Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house."

  2. Facebook -

I found this on the Southern Comfort page...:

    "Stalker 2 related:

Looks like not even a demo of the new engine is available. If GSC devs, who are now working practically without payment, manage to produce something presentable soon (by the end of February), an investor could be convinced to carry on development. Even in this case, no sequel could be reasonably expected in 2012."

  3. GTA 5 Map Is "Very Big" - Dan Houser

GTA 5's map size will likely wipe the floor with GTA 4's Liberty City if a recent comment from Rockstar's Dan Houser is anything to go by.

Asked whether GTA 5 was set in San Andreas by GI during a Max Payne 3 interview, the Rockstar co-founder said: "I've got to be real careful here, or they will drag me through the office and whip me with barbwire. I will stick to exactly what's in the press release. It's Los Santos and the surrounding countryside - and a very big map."

That's pretty much in line with what was said in Rockstar's press release - which arrived at the same time as the announcement trailer - but the first proper reference to the size of the map.

"Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created," the company said back in November.

"A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California."

  4. Guys check this out

Skyrim mod improves perfomance up to 40%

This patch will improve your frame rate by up to 40% in all CPU-dependent situations, i.e. especially in cities.

It works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds.

(Will probably be even better when I load Skyrim to actually play it, without loads of Flash bullshit and Tweetdeck in the background.)

    Modders do what Bethesdon't. :/

Try it in Markarth or Riverwood -- I guess those two are the most notorious problem areas.

I can't believe Bethesda compiled without optimization flags. If full optimization results in some kind of problem with their code base (and I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt on that, even Bethsoft wouldn't disable optimizations for no reason at all) then there has to be a better way to deal with it. Either fix the problem or at least move the offending code to a separate translation unit and only compile that without optimization.

    Holy sh*t.
