Buy the Guitar Hero 3 soundtrack, get three free songs for the game

From Ars Technica

________________________________________________________________

The song list for Guitar Hero 3 has slowly been revealed over the past few months, and now we have news from Activision that there will be another way to get fresh songs: buy the game's soundtrack. If you pick up the CD at your favorite retail store, you'll be able to go online, get an Xbox Live code, and download a new song pack with...

* AFI - Carcinogen Crush

* Flyleaf - Tina

* Marilyn Manson - Putting Holes in Happiness (remixed by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

If you buy the soundtrack, you get three free songs, but these songs will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game. It's a nice little bonus for the hardcore fans, but I'm hoping for the sake of AFI and Flyleaf fans that you'll be able to download these tracks separately in the near future.

The soundtrack will be released on October 23, and the free songs should be available when the game ships on October 28.

Playing Battle Mode in Guitar Hero 3 is a great time

From Ars Technica

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars...is-a-great-time

_________________________________________________________

After testing out the Guitar Hero 3 controller yesterday I knew it was time to put the Battle Mode to the test. The other modes included with the demo may show off the new songs, but Battle Mode was the only thing truly new so far that we've gotten to try.

The idea is that you're trying to destroy the other player—points don't matter; only the rock meter. When the other person fails, you win. Instead of gaining star power when you nail certain notes, you get attacks that you activate by raising the neck. The attacks are great: some of the them "break" strings so you have to tap that button to "fix" it, thus forcing your opponent to miss notes. In a quick solo, this can be deadly.

Other attacks force your opponent to hit the whammy bar, or they could up the difficulty level, or even double the notes the other player has to hit. And you can stack them as well: breaking a string, upping the difficulty, and then hitting "amp overload" so the notes are hard to see is a death sentence to all but the best players.

If you both survive to the end of the song, the attacks will simply drain your rock meter in a "sudden death" duel. It can be a nasty way to play the game, and more than once I almost threw my guitar down in frustration, but it made me more aggressive in my later games. If co-op makes you want to play with your friends, Battle Mode will make you want to strangle them.

Well done guys, you've added a great new mode to Guitar Hero. We can't wait for the finished game.

Guitar Hero 3 demo ISO leaked, playable on non-modded 360s

From Ars Technica

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars...non-modded-360s

_______________________________________________________________________

Ben was quite adamant about the awesomeness of both the game and guitar he played in the Guitar Hero 3 demo package. For the rest of us, the wait for the official Xbox Live release has been arduous, as those around us tout their skills at Tenacious D's "The Metal." Some gamers, though, have apparently decided that the wait was just too much, and an ISO of the demo disc has now been made available via less official means online.

Allegedly working on unmodified Xbox 360s, the downloadable ISO can be burnt to a CD or DVD and played by popping in the disc and navigating to the demos section; whatever signing the disc needs to run properly is maintained in the ISO.

The demo, as we previously reported, features five songs: "Lay Down" by Priestess, "Even Flow" by Pearl Jam, "The Metal" by Tenacious D, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" as made famous by Pat Benatar, and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" as made famous by The Scorpions. The demo shipped alongside Tony Hawk's Proving Ground and will be hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace before the launch of the game on October 28.

Murmurs from forums around the tubes indicate gamer strife over whether or not this is considered true piracy. It is unclear whether or not the demo disc conforms to the typical security measures that prevent the piracy of Xbox 360 games. We have contacted Red Octane for a comment on the situation, but have yet to receive a response.

user comments on the demo at majornelson.com:

The guitar is not required to play, it can be played with a 360 pad, but it sucks. Awesome demo though.

you can play this with the pad if this is the same version you could download and burn to a cd. iv forgot the controlls but take a look at www.neowin.net under microsoft gaming theres a thread with them in

The demo features five songs ("Lay Down", "Rock You Like a Hurricane", "Even Flow", "Hit Me with Your Best Shot", and "The Metal") played within the Desert Rock Tour venue.

The wired Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II Gibson X-Plorer guitar controller (or wireless Xbox 360 Guitar Hero III Gibson Les Paul guitar controller for that matter) is NOT needed to play the demo.

The demo CAN BE PLAYED using a standard (wired or wireless) Xbox 360 controller.

And yes, this is the SAME demo included in the December 2008 issue of Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) and Tony Hawk's Proving Ground.

Study: Guitar Hero III has more groupies than Rock Band

From Joystiq

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/study-gu...than-rock-band/

_________________________________________________________

Sure, we may go crazy over Harmonix and Electronic Arts' love child Rock Band, but data from IGN's GamerMetrics reminds us that the franchise has a ways to go if it wants to overtake its distant cousin Guitar Hero III.

According to the statistics, there were 22 million page views on IGN for Guitar Hero III-related articles, vs. 10 million for Rock Band (a 120% increase). GHIII was also on almost twice as many wishlists (5,755 vs. 2,928) as its competitor and over six times as many message board posts (25,000 vs. 4,000).

The Guitar Hero series has a lot more going for it right now, including a two-year history of commercially and critically successful titles. Commentary provided with the data notes that Rock Band has "experienced a noticeable surge in both awareness and purchase intent metrics" in the past three months, which bodes well for the game due out November 20. Guitar Hero III is coming next week.

GHIII is a definite buy for me. Its just that, I may have to get my own place before I can play it.
