Kane and Lynch: Dead Men

Regardless of how much the game scores in reviews, I'm definately picking this up for the following reasons...

1. It's by IO Interactive and the Hitman series and Freedom Fighters are among my favorite games.

2. Guns, anti-heroes, bad guys, robberies.

3. The developers said the movie "Heat" was an inspiration for the game's shootouts.

4. 2 player co-op.

Kane & Lynch will have NO Online Co-Op

From Kotaku

http://kotaku.com/gaming/brats/kane--lynch...imes-308528.php

________________________________________________

When people think co-op play, they think online. Sure, you want to game with your buddy, but inviting them over to the house is a real drag! Or because of distance, they may not be able to come over even. But, if you plan on playing online co-op with Kane & Lynch, forget it. The game doesn't have it and only sports traditional co-op. Explains the game's direction, Jens Peter Kurup:

It's quite important in the single player and co-op that we're portraying characters and we're also portraying scenarios. It would have been nice to come up with something completely new. There are things with Lynch's Psycho mode which work out differently in co-op, the healing method and things like that, but it is a more traditional approach. We feel that's what players want. Co-op is about good times.

We agree! Though, online co-op is all about better times.

It's a matter of focus, choosing what you want to deliver at what time. We looked at it and decided it was too much of a risk to change our code to be very very good at that, and we're not going to be very very good at other elements. I'll miss the online co-op, but not terribly.

Really? Geez, I dunno. Think most people will miss it terribly. Gamers are becoming a spoiled lot, you know.

Kane and Lynch has bank heist multiplayer, offline co-op

From Xbox 360 Fanboy

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/10/10/ka...-offline-co-op/

________________________________________________________

Alright, we've got good news and bad news about Kane and Lynch. Pick a hand. You sure you want that one? Alright, bad news first then. The bad news is that the game will not feature online co-op. Yeah, a game that centers around two characters working together doesn't have online co-op. The news was confirmed by Eurogamer in an interview with the game's director Jens Peter Kurup. From what we can gather of Kurup's circuitous answers, online co-op was scrapped in order to deliver the game on time.

In happier news, the multiplayer mode for Kane and Lynch has been revealed and it sounds like a lot of fun. Described by the developers at IO Interactive as such a good idea that they were surprised no one thought of it before, the multiplayer mode has players performing a bank heist. Titled Fragile Alliance, the mode has players attempt to rob a bank within a certain time limit while avoiding police fire. The twist is that players can turn on each other in order to get more loot. However, killing teammates immediately flags you as a traitor, so one has to pick the right moment to betray. Make it back to the getaway car with extra cash and you can purchase better weapons the following round. As a bonus, betrayed teammates are resurrected as police officers so they can exact their bittersweet revenge. In short, it sounds like a great idea. Here's hoping it makes us forget about online co-op.

Gamespot's plugging this game left right and center and I though I'd check out some gameplay videos from youtube...

Sorry to offend the fans, but the gameplay is umm, mediocre at best.

it totally reminds me of the dud Reservoir Dogs.. by eidos.

Homage to Michael Mann films is pretty cool though.

Gamespy's preview:

http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/kane-l...n/830308p1.html

Spiffy

Io Interactive's classic M-rated touch; beautifully grungy realism; fantastic music.

Iffy

Having to send the kids to gramma's so that you can play at full volume; morally bankrupt.

"Rarely is it that we are so totally enamored with an early preview build of a game, but this game has such a powerful mood (strongly delivered through awesome tension-fueling music, incredibly life-like graphics and enough swearing and cursing to make a sailor weep) that we just can't help ourselves."

PS3 Kane & Lynch to run as well as 360 version, developing for PS3 is fun!

The Xbox and the PC are very similar. They are just two very powerful CPUs and you can make it through your threads and be sure that it's going to run reasonably OK. The PS3 doesn't have many general purpose CPUs like a multi core system has on the PC side. It has a CELL processor which is itself a pretty powerful processor, but if you're really going to get something out of it you're going to have to utilise the SPUs on it, which are small special purpose units that you write little programs for doing whatever you need to get done.

"Those are not just standard threads that you just spawn like you do on a PC. You have to really think it through and identify areas in your game that will benefit from this and isolate that code and make the cuts so you can transfer the minimal amount of data to and from those units and get the most processing power out of them."

He added: "It's a very different approach. The code ends up being rather different than it is on the Xbox and the PC. You can start with something that's pretty much the same and then you try to run it on the PS3 and it doesn't run very well. Then you start to optimise it and optimise it and you get further away from where you started but you really start to unlock some of the potential of the PS3."

"Well obviously it's something that requires a bit of resources and special effort, which costs money", he said. "But on the other hand it's something that I think most developers are rather keen on getting into because it's a new fresh system and it's an interesting architecture. Development wise it's fun. It brings back a lot of memories from college and university. In many ways it's a fun architecture to work on but definitely one that's also going to cost you some money because you need to write special purpose code for it."

(mod and admin: please duplicate this thread on the PS3 game section)

ign review

8.0 Presentation

Where's the online co-op? A great story with well developed characters are the high points of the game.

7.0 Graphics

A dated feel to it, even though the art direction isn't half bad.

8.0 Sound

The voice acting is done with authority. The sound effects could use more pep.

6.5 Gameplay

Spotty AI and a clunky cover system make this game a chore at times.

6.0 Lasting Appeal

A short game that many won't even make it through. The online mode is the only thing worth seeing more than once.

7.0

Decent OVERALL

(out of 10 / not an average)
