"When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today!"

Today, July 26, 2008 marks the ninth anniversary of "Operation Vijay" which was engineered to flush out the infiltrators and indigenous militants from Kargil, one of the toughest mountain warfare fought till date. This day, "Kargil Vijay Divas" is being celebrated to pay homage to our soldiers, who laid their lives during the 2 month long conflict from May 26, 1999 to July 26, 1999.

Nine years ago, around this time our valiant Indian Army was battling on the rough, rocky and glacial terrain stretching from Zoji-La Pass to the Siachen Glacier to evict the perfidious aggression in this high altitude sector. However, our Army thwarted this attempt by the intruders to conquer the rugged heights of Kargil. Unfortunately this military campaign to repel the intrusion left about 525 brave men dead and another 1,400 wounded.

Now, today, on this Kargil Vijay Divas,

It's an occasion to mourn!

It's an occasion to rejoice!

But it's also an occasion; a moment of despair and indignation!

Having said that, the grit and determination of our warriors would continue to serve as a beacon not only for the valiant soldiers of our country but also for the generations to come. Their fearlessness and deed stands as a guiding light to believe in the strength and steely resolve of our motherland unequivocally and authoritatively!

For the men who gave their lives today for our safer tomorrow…Valorous Soldiers…

We salute you for laying down your lives for a noble cause - to safeguard our beloved nation!

We salute you for demonstrating that remarkable spirit of patriotism, paramount courage and for offering supreme sacrifices in your lofty struggle for upholding our national pride!

We believe, the time is apposite for remembering the following motto which gets molded into the hearts of hundreds of Gentleman Cadets -

"The safety, honor and welfare of your country come first always and everytime.

The honor, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.

Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and everytime."

Jai Jawan! Jai Hind!

Kargil war heroes!

""""Shaahedoo KI Chittao pe Langege har baras mele

Watan pe Marne Walo ka yahi baki nishaan hoga""""".

I was reading this at Cracked.com today. 5 real life soldiers who made Rambo look like a pussy.

Yogendra Singh Yadav is at 4. Read this -

Who Was He?

Yogendra Singh Yadav was a member of an Indian grenadier battalion during a conflict with Pakistan in 1999. Their mission was to climb "Tiger Hill" (actually a big-a*s mountain), and neutralize the three enemy bunkers at the top. Unfortunately, this meant climbing up a sheer hundred-foot cliff-face of solid ice. Since they didn't want to all climb up one at a time with ice-axes, they decided they'd send one guy up, and he'd fasten the ropes to the cliff as he went, so everyone else could climb up the sissy way. Yadav, being awesome, volunteered.

Half way up the icy cliff-o'-doom, enemies stationed on an adjacent mountain opened fire, shooting them with an RPG, then spraying assault-rifle fire all over the cliff. Half his squad was killed, including the commander, and the rest were scattered and disorganized. Yadav, in spite of being shot three times, kept climbing.

When he reached the top, one of the target bunkers opened fire on him with machine guns. Yadav ran toward the hail of bullets, pitched a grenade in the window and killed everyone inside. By this point the second bunker had a clear shot and opened fire, so he ran at them, taking bullets while he did, and killed the four heavily-armed men inside with his bare hands.

Meanwhile, the remainder of his squad was standing at the top of the cliff staring at him saying, "dude, holy sh*t!" They then all went and took the third bunker with little trouble.

For his gallantry and sheer ballsiness, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award. Unlike the Medal of Honor, the Param Vir Chakra is only given for "rarest of the rare gallantry which is beyond the call of duty and which in normal life is considered impossible to do." That's right, you actually have to break the laws of reality just to be eligible.

And we imagine the medal looks like two, brass testicles.

It has only been awarded 21 times, and two thirds of the people who earned it died in the process. It was initially reported that Yadav had as well, but it turns out that they just mistook him for someone less badass. Or they just figured no real human being could survive a broken leg, shattered arm and 10-15 fresh bullet holes in one sitting.

The best Hollywood could come up with:

John McClane (Bruce Wilis) from Die Hard:

Why it Doesn't Compare:

McClane has a fairly impressive resume of badassery, climbing through elevator shafts and killing terrorists with his bare hands, much like Yadav, except Yadav took more bullets in 10 minutes than McClane did in the entire series without even slowing down. Plus, he was f**king 19-years-old! Try to imagine a high school Bruce Willis screaming, "yippee ki-yay, motherf**ker!"

I am still awestruck by how amazingly tough this guy was. Much respect to him and all our forces.

brilliant thread.

What our soldiers go though everyday along our borders is too huge an act to put in words. I have had the honor to see some of the toughest situations at close hand (not talking abt combat, of course); nothing compares to their selflessness.

Jai Jawan.

My friend's father died in this war, fighting for our country. I still remember, nearly 10 years back, when on Fathers Day, a girl from my class gave a rather moving speech and this boy broke down. Ill never forget that day, it made me thankful for what I have and what a life I always will have thanks to the sacrifice of that boy's father and several other people like him.

I salute him and those heroes who battled an amazing battle, who fought a tremendous fight and who won in a location where all odds were against them. Jai Hind!

kargil war was one of the best fought wars in a couple of decades....our neighbors clearly had the advantage than there indian counterparts simply because they were shooting from a greater height...but our brave indian soldiers were too much for them...thanx & salutation to all who have laid down there lives for the nation & everybody else who helped our nation to win the kargil war....:wallbash:
