A little help pls.. Possible PS3 Sound Setup??

I found this link while looking for amps and stuff for the PS3 -> HDMI LPCM 7.1 5.1 to Stereo Outputs

Assuming that I get this hooked up to a speaker set like the Z5500 with separate stereo inputs for every 2 channels, and I set the PS3's output to LPCM via HDMI. If I play a Blu-Ray, would I be able to obtain the DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD audio out on the speakers via this decoder box? (Essentially what I'm asking is whether this can be used to get the HD audio formats out on the speakers using this box as a go-between without altering the audio)

Note that I'm not using another receiver anywhere in this setup.

A few diagrams of what there is on that page I've linked to.

And how the hell is such a device just $130 (compared to the usual receivers and such)

The Z5500 has optical input, why do you need this, PS3 has optical out!!!

This device is only useful when your DVD or any other player has only HDMI out (no optical audio out) & your receiver dont have HDMI input & only optical input.

I use a different one for DTS-HD/Dolby True HD and LPCM 8ch for my amp ( My power amp's HD but I use a device similar to this for gaming consoles alone , cuz of single outs , mine acts as a splitter ) but this one would surely do and its pretty affordable as well.

You will be able to decode DTS-HD/Dolby True HD encoded Digital audio however you will need a poweramp / AV receiver first of all.The whole purpose of this device is to get HD audio through to an amp/reciever which doesn't sport one.

If you btw have an idea of grabbing an av receiver in the near future get the yamaha/denon starters.Your neighbours won't be pleased though.

What does the poweramp do? Can't I take the 3 (assuming I want 5.1) stereo outputs from the device and directly connect it to the speaker sets?

hmm , I get where youre going and I seriously havent done that in the past.

You'd probably wanna take outs from FL/FR , LFE/FC and RL/RR alone. But for that you need the input first of all which doesnt exist in this situation.

Exactly.

Why doesn't the input exist? As in, the LPCM output comes from the PS3 to this decoder box right? So can't I take the output from those ports to the speakers?

The LPCM and the bitstream output comes from the HDMI port of the PS3.You get the HDMI out from this device to your TV for display.

hmm , I think this is gonna work out. Do this.

1.HDMI from the PS3 > this device > HD Display

2.LPCM / Bitstream from this device to your pre-amp/reciever which doesnt have a HD audio decoder OR your speakers through the multi-channel out. ( I just saw that this device acts as an amp )

3.Optical Out from this device > your sub or the main standalone device for your speakers.

Oh, right then. 1 and 2 (2nd part and I'll use LPCM) is what I'll do if and when I do get this device. Right now I don't have a receiver or pre-amp. My stupid cousin sold an Onkyo receiver I had lent him for a year without even asking me. I didn't even get the money. :arigato:

Would 3. be necessary or can the sub also be connected with the centre speaker to the LFE/FC port??
