Keyofx
System Failure: Why PS3 and 360 drop dead for the same reasons Excellent read.
john117
^^ you should have added a disclaimer - Fanbois stay away By the way root of evil is same everywhere (ps3/360 or nvidia cards) ,mandatory ROHS standards being forced on the electronics industry .. ie the ban on lead based solder and promotion of lead free solder.Lead free solder is weaker and can endure lesser thermal stress, combine this with small form factor of ps3 and 360 it leads to death of consoles ,for the luckier ones it happens in warranty. And this was the reason of high failure rates of 8600,8400 and g92 series of nvidia cards failed. And when one of the major electronics major was asked how much lead was saved after ROHS standards were implented they said "About 20 car batteries of lead in a year". dullu
Also it's been an interesting trend to note that most ps3s SOD/YLOD right after their warranty gets over
HundredProofSam
Also it's been an interesting trend to note that most ps3s SOD/YLOD right after their warranty gets over Like the article says, its a cumulative issue. It builds up to failure over time and depends also on your surroundings. If you keep it in an open, ventilated, dust-free environment, you can avoid these issues, but keep it in a confined space with lots of exposure to dust and you'll get there a lot faster. My PS3 YLOD'd almost two years after I bought it, and it happened a week or so after I moved it from a table top to a more confined space. That may have contributed to the overheating. peace
dullu
Dust in India is inevitable my ps3 too underwent a SOD (for reasons unknown) after 1.5 yrs...but on opening and cleaning it, there wasent a lot of dust inside....so something's gotta be there with the manufacturing.... Also Sam...i guess our ps3s were launch models....but if u consider cases rnd here on IVG members, most of the 40 GB ps3s die within a week of their warranties expiring
Keyofx
Lets not kid ourselves. They did it out of fear of being sued into oblivion and no other reason.peace They're ALL bastards. Every one. I just got my Apple power adapter replaced because they were big on form and not function. Damned thing started fraying at the edges for no reason. They only admitted to it in July this year, too. And there are dozens of issues Apple just won't admit to like the cracking plastic cases on the old MacBooks. dabba
all i can say is.... they sure don't make 'em like they used to..... i mean all electronic items failing in a shorter life span compared to what it was like say 10-15 yrs back just yesterday my mom's moto razr v8 gave an error n went into bootloader error.... the phone is barely even used.... in comparison a v3 which has been used for a good 5-6 yrs n had a battery replacement only once gives no problems whatsoeva greedy bastids... babj1
if the article is correct then the problem is with the soldering n all and not of the lense or watsoever???means due to overheating the soldering fails
sagalime
"Smokers are more likely to end up with dead machines too - the tobacco finds its way into the console, making the innards sticky and thus more attractive to dust and debris that comes in through the intakes " they should put this on cigarette packets
Solitaire
I'm thinking its all a big conspiracy against modders... Mod your console and you lose warranty right? So, then a modded console wouldn't be eligible for replacement. This way they make you think twice before modding your set (and inevitably not go in for a modded console) cos you'll not get a replacement ( via warranty ) when it will most definitely fail a year or so later. This way you will never want to get your console modded for fear of losing warranty. Hence MS and Sony both win, and the game developers wont have anyone pirating their games, and there won't be any homebrew stuff allowed either. Oh, and for Sony it's all a bit hypothetical since there's no modchip / custom firmware for drives out yet which enables booting backups.
