My Website Query

Hi Guys,

Last year I got my website made through a company in Kolkata. They included all charges (making website + domain + web hosting) and made the website. Now I just got a call from them and they asked me to renew my domain + web hosting rights as one year has expired. They told me that the cost would be Rs. 8000 for web hosting and Rs. 500 for the domain.

I searched on the internet in websites like godaddy.com etc and found out that it would cost me less than half of what they have given me. I called them back and told them I would not continue hosting my website through them. They have given me the cd (backup of my website). But they told that the domain had to be transferred 15 days before expiry so they charged me Rs. 500 to retain the domain. I have paid them Rs. 500 but I am not sure what they have told me about the transfer thing.

Some websites I searched for hosting my website :-

http://webhostinggeeks.com/ .

The reviews for goddady were not great so there were other options like hostgator , justhost, lunarpages, ixwebhosting which were also decent.

As I am a noob in web related stuff , I don't know how to transfer my website online and also would appreciate if you guys could recommend me some decent web hosting websites. My website has been build on asp.net and I suppose I have to get windows hosting.

1. Yes, you need windows hosting

2. Stay away from godaddy for domain registration..

3. hostgator and lunarpages are a no-no because they allow pr0n also on their webservers..

Apart from that the general guideline is that you should not be lured in by lots of space and bandwidth... choose a good host that gives you adequate amount for a good price and customer service should be good... dreamhost is good generally but i find that their servers go down very often or start acting up in terms of performance every now and then but still they are the best among all the "big" players..(you wont get cpanel with them though.. but i've found their in-house solution pretty good..infact better than cpanel so far..)

otherwise look for a reseller in india with whom you can get call-support..

Rs 8,000 is too much for web hosting. We pay $120 a year on Hostgator for IVG and we've had almost no downtime (none that the host is to blame for at least). And their customer support is brilliant.

Indian hosting companies usually just by reseller accounts from international hosts and make a quick buck.

peace
