The Sales Charts Thread

Recommended Posts

Karoo doesn't fall for these much. Let's switch allegiance and bait Zodak. That will take some creativity - Sony-bashing in Sales thread is just too easy.

Now quite subtle, aren't you? I still think you should have been nominated for Troll of the year. :threatenlumber:

I am not sure what your point is. That Bayo did well its just as likely that the other niche titles would do well? Thats like saying if I rolled a 6 on a dice once, I will be able to roll it every time. Or even most of the time.

Most of Bayo's sales were in Japan. Infact almost all of them. And even with those meager sales numbers its still in no way or shape "one of the biggest hit of the year". Not even close. It didnt even cross 200k in the US in its first month. Cant remember it charting significantly in the EU. If you were to make a list of top selling games of that year, Bayo probably wouldnt even break in the top 25.

And HD remakes might come out for 30-40 bucks but from a consumers point of view they have 2-3 games in them. And not just decent games, great games.

i checked wiki and i guess i was wrong thinking bayonetta was very big in sales...but i dont get it how can u justify a company that has spend so much on its games development to sell its game for $30 from start only....specially when everyone price it so high...

Its only a question of which would lead them to higher profits. The development costs doesn't matter to the consumers.

yea you are right....but there is also a certain price standard followed by the industry....every publisher, developer always stick to the price of $60 for the new game.....when another company spending same amount of development cost comes out with $30 price tag for its new game...it will appear of not being up to mark ..it kinda gives wrong signal also....dont u think??

Yeah, it will if its just Vanquish and Enslaved. I think the criticism was on the industry as a whole than just sega and namco.

$40 should have been the industry standard from day one. Over time, production processes become streamlined and costs go down. At current prices, you can sell less than a million and still break even and be considered a success, so obviously the price includes a sizeable margin for publishers.

HundredPercentSahi bola. +1 repped...they all stuck to $60 instead....$40 would have been absolutely perfect...would have also helped in reducing second hand sales to certain extent.

$40 still won't sell a bad game, or even a mediocre game. $60 will sell a mediocre game with the marketing hype. Vanquish was doomed from the start, and so was Enslaved. The $60 price is ingrained within us - we hate it. But any game that comes less than that we will think will be a bad game. It's a wicked cycle.

I disagree. Look at the sales of that Sniper Ghost warrior game. It retailed at 30-40 bucks and was in the UK top 10/20 for f**king ever. It even made the steam top 10 at one point. They have made enough money to bankroll a sequel with the Cryengine 3.

And this is from a no name developer who made a distinctly sh*t game on the freaking PC.

Look at Just Dance. IIRC it retailed for 40 bucks instead of the usual 50 on the Wii and its one of the highest selling games for Ubisoft. And now Just Dance 2 is outselling even that. Look at Wii sports resort that threw in a Motion plus at the price of 50 bucks and that sold millions.

I am not saying every niche game should follow that model but you have to admit its a chance worth taking. Esp when the alternative is the game bombing with sub 500k sales that barely gets them a return on investment. If they sell more copies at a lower price its not just an argument for profit, it actually bodes well for a sequel going in for full price.

That's because it's the standard. If all games are $40, will you still think they're all bad?

It boils down to who's going to bell the cat? Is any AAA producer going to take the risk? Once there are enough titles which start going at $40 will everyone else start. It's only with enough numbers can the price point be brought down. And that's going to be difficult since everyone wants to make more, not less. It's hard to stand up in a meeting and say 'Let's cut our price by 33% in the hope that we sell more'.
