Keyofx
Capcom's Inafune Declares Japan Game Industry 'Finished' As reported by Destructoid, Capcom's Keiji Inafune - a development fixture going back to the original Mega Man - was unimpressed by the games being shown on the TGS floor. Except for Capcom's of course. At an event Friday, Inafune asked attendees what they thought of the show, asking them to be candid with their opinions. Then he proffered this: Personally when I looked around [at] all the different games at the TGS floor, I said "Man, Japan is over. We're done. Our game industry is finished." Inafune backtracked a bit, saying Capcom's upcoming releases exemplify "kick a*s" Japanese product. I've said this too. Not dead, but certainly on life support thanks to Nintendo. KeezNah
On a more related note: the guy who said stuff like having another Okami wasn't likely or appealing and develops titles for a predominantly western audience thinks the Japanese game industry is dead. Then he goes to pimp out his own sh*t, because it's certainly something we haven't seen before. Someone tell me if I got that right.
Aftrunner
I think (looking sales charts over the past weeks/months) the console industry is getting pretty slow over there. Sure every now and then a big title will come out and will sell a lot but generally over the past few months about 80% of games in the top 10 have been hand-held games. Even the console sales look pretty bleak. The Wii is no longer selling as much as it was last year and the PS3 had a good couple of weeks but is starting to slow down again. If you tried your hand at Lost Odyssey without your FF goggles on, you'll realize that its a fantastic game in its own right. Also play Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3. Crisis Core wasn't a true JRPG. Keyofx
It isn't just about JRPGs though. Not every Japanese game on the Ps2/PS1 was a JRPG.
Keyofx
Yup. You hit the nail on the head. He thinks DR2 is innovative and cool :| Well, he has to say that doesn't he? The game is aimed at the west after all. Why would he badmouth his own firm's games? The point here is not that they are developing games for the west, but WHY they're doing it. The Japanese market is a shadow of what it used to be in the last two generations. You'll only get more authentically Japanese titles if there was a local market for it. AGAIN, forget the big titles. What hurts the local industry is the hundreds of smaller titles that used to come out on the PS1 and PS2 have disappeared along with their devs. I know I won't be a seeing a King of Colosseum 2 or Disaster Report 2 sequel any time soon. You can't develop a game without deep pockets this gen, and that's somethings devs won't have because the local market is in the crapper.
Keyofx
Lets go back to NES/SNES/Sega days too then! Why? Wouldn't comparing games from a generation or two back be more logical?
KeezNah
I know I won't be a seeing a King of Colosseum 2 or Disaster Report 2 sequel any time soon. The second DA was localised and released in Europe as Raw Danger. The third entry was released in Japan for PSP this year (Atlus please pick this up kthx) You can't develop a game without deep pockets this gen, and that's somethings devs won't have because the local market is in the crapper. I feel, with the advent of digital distribution, that we're still getting to see those "smaller" games that don't crop up in regular retail space. Whether or not Japan is big on this is another thing for me to understand but its not like doujin games have taken a back seat or anything (if you still want to count dating sims and obscure fighting games of course), and I don't feel there's anything wrong with developing games that cater to what your countries binge on. The DSi and PSP are still fabulous platforms to work on, and if this means less original Japanese-oriented next-gen titles in the long run - I'm okay with that. Karooo
Play Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon or Valkyria Chronicles and then come back here and talk. I have beaten valkyria chronicles, Star ocean 4? no thanks, lost odyssey will give a try soon, rest am not interested.

HundredProofSam
It's cool to make games that appeal to the Western audience as well, but he's just shooting himself in the foot with statements like these. Didn't he say that there won't be another Onimusha? :| Maybe its decisions like these that are 'finishing' the Japanese industry peace
