Aftrunner
Yes I was. If its 30 bucks or so I might bite. Else will wait it out for a sale or something.
Tyler
I'm guessing $40 on Steam.
spindoctor
Any idea about the price? Stalker I mean. on amazon, the pripyat collector's edition is selling for 40$. they don't have a normal edition, so no idea if there even is a normal edition which is cheaper. i think it's safe to assume that the digital version will cost 40$ as well, and maybe if we get lucky it will be 35$. steam usually offers a 10% pre-order discount as well, so it might come a bit lower. that's the cheapest it will be available to us for a long time, so if you're a stalker fan, that's probably the deal to go for. Aftrunner
Oh that collectors edition looks nice. It would cost about 2300 or so if I get KMD to import it. Beats buying it off steam and downloading 8-10GB on my puny connection.
spindoctor
the game is available on steam with a fabulous pricing scheme. 30$ is the normal price, but you can buy it for 20$ if you own any of the older stalker games on steam. just picked it up for 20$, and the download is ~3-3.5gb only

Tyler
Okay so I got the game and played it for a couple of hours today. Graphically it looks pretty much the same as the first game. The lighting is better but the character/weapons models and animations are the same. I don't know how Clear Sky stacks up against the first game but I'm sure it also looks the same. I also had to turn down the graphics settings to 'High' instead of the highest available setting. So either my PC is now showing it's age or the engine isn't exactly the most optimized engine out there. Also, for some reason I cannot run the game while fraps is running. Anyway, graphics aren't exactly the reason why the STALKER series is so awesome. The atmosphere which we all love from SOC is here and it feels even better. Nights are even creepier this time and the day time exploration feels quite depressing thanks to the desolate environments (all this in a good way). The UI has been revamped and the new weapon/gear upgrade system is pretty cool. You can now upgrade every gun and also your armour at settlements. The combat still remains challenging (but not as much as SOC). Expect to die a lot in the beginning. This is certainly not a game for folks who have become accustomed to the dumbed down shooters of recent times. No regenerating health or heaps of ammunition to be found here folks. The AI is also very pretty unforgiving. Enemies rarely stick to a certain pattern. The move around the area unpredictably. The normal difficulty level can easily pass off as the hardest mode on many other games. I haven't played enough to tell if the story is any better but once again STALKER is all about exploration, survival and atmosphere and COP does not disappoint in that regard. Aftrunner
CS was better looking than SOC. Actually that might not be a totally accurate comparision cause I played SOC on DX9 at medium high and CS on DX 10 maxxed out, so obviously CS looked better. I like the sound of upgrading your weapons/equipment and its nice to know they went back to SoC style, CS (from what I have played so far) seems to have moved too far away from the core gameplay that was good. john117
@tyler: you are excalty right about night part.. I am too scared to go out exploring in night ... also the looming threat of emissions doesnt help , as finding a shelter in night is even more difficult, add to it the threat of packs of dogs or mutants or the anomalies ,its really difficult to survive in night. I rather put my player to sleep at dusk and wake up at dawn and continue.I am not gonna step out in night till I get decent armor and night vision. Its been a long time since I was this spooked about venturing in dark in a game.
Tyler
Yup, surviving at night is very tough. But I can't help but to venture out just to experience the creepiness given how much I love horror in my games.
Joy
Clear Sky was superior graphically only because of better lighting and sun effects , otherwise it was pretty much the same textures etc and areas. And yes even I had to lower the settings of sun glare to get good playable fps even on my system , so yes the new sun lighting is taxing on the hardware , so I'm sure same is being used in Call of Pripyat. One thing I love about Stalker , even though the areas we visited are same in all games , it still feels fresh even in the next game. Like the X16 lab , the way we enter it and the circumstances in Clear Sky is totally different to Shadow of Chernobyl. I haven't played Call of Pripyat yet so don't know which areas of the map are there and if any new areas are added or not.
john117
^^ the old maps are gone from what I heard ...replaced by 3 huge zones where each zone being 3 times the size of largest one in original stalker .
Joy
^^ the old maps are gone from what I heard ...replaced by 3 huge zones where each zone being 3 times the size of largest one in original stalker . I forgot to mention Clear Sky had a big new area called Swaps which was not there in first game , it also enabled a new path to get to X16 labs (from behind) , it had open grass fields and radiated water ponds , I think this is again used in Call of Pripyat. I hope a few more new areas are added as well like you're mentioning. Looking forward to playing Call of Pripyat.

spindoctor
well i'm fairly unhappy with the game as well. there are loads of issues with it, but at least my disappointment is not because it's 'too slow' when that's exactly how it's meant to be. Tyler
Well, SOC had it's fair share of issues as well, but I still enjoyed it. I'm just trying to ignore the glitches in this one. One thing I didn't like (and this applies to the first game as well) are the weapon sounds. Most of them sound like peashooters. It's weird when the enemies' guns sound loud and your own gun make a tinny rattling noise.
spindoctor
i could write an essay on what's wrong with the game, but it basically boils down to this... the atmosphere, which is the best part of stalker, is severely compromised. in almost every aspect. the graphics are absolute sh*t... there's no other way to describe them. it looks worse than the first game that came out 3 years ago. it looks worse than the leaked alpha builds that came out 5 years ago. low res textures. partial antialiasing coverage. poor draw distance. texture and foilage pop in. then there are bugs and glitches galore. reviewers said it was most polished and bug free stalker yet but they're full of sh*t. in 2 hours i've comes across clipping bugs, ai bugs and i even saw a guy standing upside down on the roof. nothing kills immersion quite like seeing a dude standing on the roof. and the localization is horrible. the dialogues all have stalkers calling each other "bro" and what not... as if it was written by someone stuck in the 80s or something. it all kills immersion, and i can't find the interest to even bother playing more. 20$ down the drain for me.
