LaughingMan777
Hi I've been playing with the PS3 kept vertical. Day b4 yesterday, I kept it horizontal. I played my usual quota today and noted that the PS3 was running pretty warm. Put it back to vertical. The cabinet where it rested was definitely much hotter and the PS3 underside was pretty hot too. I'm pretty sure this is not the case when I kept it vertical cos I'd usually check to see how warm it was getting before packing up, and could hardly feel anything. Just googled this. Apparently, its been tested and proved that PS3 runs cooler when horizontal. Thats definitely not what I noticed. How re you guys keeping ur PS3s? Karooo
i think Vertical is better for ps3.
LaughingMan777
^^ those pics make no sense The horizontal shot is of the front. And its hot. Ok. I see the hot zone is taken from reflection of the vent's heat onto some object. So apparently the PS3 is running cooler... Still, would have been better if they had taken a direct shot in horizontal position. The vertical shot is of the back (vents). I'd expect the vents to look like that. And the rest of the PS3 looks much cooler.
Hot-Drake-Pixel
Vertical runs cooler.
Nemo
question though, why does it work like that ?? i mean we dont put discs in our cpu kept horizontally, we don put discs in our dvd players kept vertically, so why does people push for vertical placements of consoles ?? LaughingMan777
hmmmm... I dont think there's a definitive answer to this... I think vertical ought to run cooler since the underside is not restricted and will dissipate heat faster. vents ought to work the same for both positions. But heard somewhere that vertical puts strain on the blu-ray... I think its better to run horizontal cos of the blu-ray, n use a laptop cooler pad for cooling the underside. Nemo
just place it on an open surface and do with it. my ps3 is horizontal with plenty of gap on all sides. 4ft+

If you see the vent positioning on the underside, they are near the very sides and I am pretty sure they are contoured in a way from the inside to push out air horizontally instead of downwards... Karooo
Hot air always goes up, so keep ps3 vertical imo, it will go out fast from the top vent.
farzi gamer
I too found the base of the PS3 when in horizontal position to be too warm, while kept vertically it hasn't been the case.. a related question though, is it a must to have the area at the back of the PS3 open? If not how much space should be there between the closed space and PS3?

wickedbl0ke
there is no answer to this. your ps will be cooler to whichever side of the fans get the most breathing space. i read on one of the sony forums that if you keep your bottom back fans aired properly, you will not have any issues. i got a cooling system for my ps3. climates in india need one. but then again winter is approaching. happy gaming. I haven't noticed the PS3 running hot though.. at max it becomes warm for me even after 10 hours of continuous gaming. Mine is placed horizontally with good amount of open area on all sides.. Vertical "could" put a strain on the blu ray drive though (as LED mentioned). Basically, I think you can put it in any direction you want as long as it is placed in open areas. PS3 coolers are just a gimmick to earn money or needed only if you are dealing with constrained space.
