ps3 phat/slim decision

The slim is new on the market and nobody knows about its failure rate yet. I say go for the phat.. if you really wanna go for the slim, wait a few months and decide if its really more reliable than the phat... I've had a phat 40gb for over a year now without a single issue...

new skus can be dodgy and the bitstreaming audio feature isnt really tht big an advantage as if you have a decoder capable of dts hd its very likely tht it can process lpcm over hdmi as well making tht a redundant feature.....and imo the original playstation 3 looks much better.so i wud say go for the non-slim PS3

whenever i do buy i'd rather pay mrp and buy from croma so i can get the 2 years extended warranty.

dont have a AVR which supports HD audio yet but its always btter to be future proof.

cant comment on the others but this is absolutely not true. You can clearly tell the difference between bitstream of a DTS-HD/TrueHD track and a LPCM one on a good setup .. but this is only a consideration if you have a supporting AV receiver

zophar

have u found that much diff b/w lpcm and bitstream. from what little i've read on some audiophile forums there seems to be hotly debated with most people saying there is no difference and the ps3 doing a good job of decoding the hd audio.

I second that. U dont want to pay for a console AND be their test users at the same time... (I think thats what M$ did with their initial Xbox 360 lot. Rather than put it thru full regressive testing- launch it, replace/repair RROD ones and work on the better version while the market pays for itself  )

So, I see almost all the phat lovers also luv the Spidey font. Me too!

^^^^^

But honestly speaking, when sony does decide to release the PS4, they shudnt call it that. I mean, honestly, there was PS, PS2, PS3, too many sequels spoil the broth. I bet they can be innovative enough to give it a fab name.

Look at Microsoft, they had the XBox and now they revamp the same name with 360, thats innovation right there. Given that PlayStation are loosing millions, they need a great campaign, and they need to start now. Ofcourse it will mean bad news for cheap asses like you and me,,, but im willing to make that investment.

wats vfm?

its short for Value For Money

I havent read much about the Slim version but the fact that its gonna consume less energy nd produce less heat too, looking at the no. of YLOD issues happening with PS3 phat coz of heating problems, I wouldnt mind going for the slim version from Croma...with 2 yrs extended warranty...

But as LedViper mentioned, one woulnt want to be a scrap goat either...I feel that most would make a choice depending on the appearance aspect...

I myself will have to buy one in near future, I hope by then PS3 slim will be out of its testing batch..

so far its seems that opinion is very much divided between the 2 options.. hmm.. i dont think that the slim will have any major advancements but neither should it be considered to be more prone to breakdowns. its been out in the US for few months now, if there were any issues they'd probably show by now, na?

also has anyone used the OS install option on the phat? any real world advantages? say ripping BR discs?

no personal experience, but I spoke to one of the guys there and what I was told is, if I face any sort of issue with the PS3 bought from them, then they would be paying for the service charges to Sony and not us...so I guess the answer to ur question would be yes, but its Sony that will be doing the servicing or the replacement nd Croma would be paying for it..I think I got it right...
