I was little disappointed with the opening scene in mgs4...as someone said, the intos to mgs 2 and 3 were better. But I suppose this suits the scenario. I still have to complete it though..I'm currently stuck in the awesomeness of valkyria chronicles, ninja gaiden and ratchet and clank...and uncharted 2. Too many games, too little time.

MGS 3 halo jump :scratchchin::naughty: awesomeness!

@jDAMN: Despite the awesomeness of HL:2, I strangely don't remember the opening intro all that much. Maybe I remember more of the E3 trailer that used parts from the intro.

HL and HL2 both had amazing openings... nothing flashy/grand, no cinematics, all first person playable. HL put you in as another 9-5 kind of guy and HL2 set up the oppressive atmosphere brilliantly. I still remember looking up at Breen and hearing 'Welcome. Welcome, to City 17. You have chosen, or been chosen...'

Some of my favorites (across all platforms, not necessarily PS3)...

Half-Life - Hands down my favorite opening to a game and it's not even a cutscene. All the little details made it so cool. Plus the whole "looks like a normal day at work but why do I have a bad feeling about it?" thing was so brilliantly done.

Half-Life 2 - Once again, more or less the same as HL1, yet so different.

Silent Hill 2 - Very simple. James Sunderland staring at his reflection in the mirror of a filthy bathroom at a rest stop just outside Silent Hill. You know the man is depressed and almost given up on life but yet has a little glimmer of hope... the letter.

Silent Hill: Homecoming - Initially comes off as a cheap "Jacob's Ladder" rip-off but makes so much more sense once you finish the game and know the whole story.

BioShock - More or less, inspired by Half-Life but the moment where you catch a glimpse of Rapture and the score kicks in is brilliant.

Fallout 3 - Seriously, how many games start with you being expelled from a birth canal?

Mass Effect - It isn't a grand opening but the text explaining the background, the title and the music give me goosebumps every single time. "What about Shepard?"

Prey - Another "normal day but something bad is gonna happen" kind of opening, which I loved.

Far Cry 2 - The jeep ride through the war torn African town was probably one of the best things about the game. Very reminiscent of the movie Blood Diamond.

Devil May Cry 3 - Dante kicking the sh*t out of demons who wouldn't let him have his pizza in peace. Never gets old!

Mafia - I'm glad someone else mentioned it too.

StarCraft/Diablo II/WarCraft III - Blizzard's cinematics pwn everything else out there.

Heavenly Sword - Pretty much all the cutscenes in the game were great but the opening really set the stage.

Folklore - So beautiful, so mysterious.

Left 4 Dead - Lots of gunfire + lots of zombies + Zoey = awesome intro.

There are more which I am missing. Will edit later...

Among recently released games I really loved the opening of Borderlands. It has a really laid-back feel with some funky music playing in the background + Tarantino/Guy Ritchie style captioned intros. Halo: ODST also had an awesome opening scene. I restarted the game twice just to see the intro. And yeah finally, Brutal Legend's intro kicks a*s!
