Online games based on 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks are becoming increasingly popular in the days leading to the first anniversary of the attacks, says a Mid Day report.

The companies that developed the two games Operation Mumbai and Mumbai Rescue say the games are steadily gaining popularity among online gamers as the anniversary of the attacks approaches.

Akshay Shah (28), an online gamer from Dahisar, said, "I really like the idea of a game on 26/11. It gives me an opportunity pay tribute to the 26/11 martyrs."

15-year-old Sharvan Datar, yet another online gamer, who lives in Thane, said, "I like playing games that are based on terror attacks and military coups on my X-box 360. I am planning to buy games on the 26/11 attacks too, so I can have the pleasure of killing terrorists."

Peter Whiten, the director operations, Netaxis IT Pvt Ltd, which developed Mumbai Rescue, said, "As the first anniversary of the 26/11 approaches, the number of gamers logging in to play the game is increasing."

Maruti Shanker, managing director of Seven Seas Technology Private Ltd, which developed Operation Mumbai, said, "Three months after our game was launched, it became one of the top 10 favourites among Indian gamers. It is not only attracting expert gamers, but newcomers as well."

Operation Mumbai begins with the landing of the terrorists in Mumbai via the sea route in a boat (Kuber). In the first stage, the terrorists enter a railway station, which is similar to CST, and start firing.

The gamer has to kill all the terrorists to enter the next level, which resembles Cama Hospital, then move on to the Trident, the Taj and finally to Nariman House.

Mumbai Rescue unfolds in a hotel similar to the Taj. Hundred terrorists equipped with modern weapons take people hostage.

The gamer is equipped with the most modern of weapons. His task is to kill all the terrorists without killing the hostages.

Sock and Wave, an online game that gives one the opportunity to hurl virtual shoes at Goerge W Bush, become wildly popular overnight. Before the website crashed, it reportedly had accumulated over 1.4 million hits.

New York Defender followed the alleged al-Qaeda attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. In the game, the gamer can protect the twin towers from the killer airplanes by shooting them down.

What about a console game on 26/11, would be real fun running through some Pakistani terrorrist, we can have 4-5 modes

1) Taj Hotel level - Clear the hotel, kill all terrorists, rescue hostages, can even include time based missions

2) Road Chase level - chase and hunt down terrorists across Mumbai streets

3) Hospital Level - Hunt down terrorists in hospital, without causing civilian damage

4) Evacuation level at Cama House - Stealth mode level

What's your opinion guys ?

I think its unfair to have a casual or action packed game on a terrorist attack event cause if we were really in those situations our faces would have turned blue with fear. Moreover making a mockery of an event that killed hundreds of people is not really something we need to relive in a game over and over again.

I, for one, cannot fathom playing games like these. No matter how I see it, terrorists managed to do what they wanted to do to a great extent. Sure in the end, we managed to kill them all and capture one lunatic but if you look at the way we went about doing it, the glaring mistakes and the lack of chain of command and the amateurish response all become obvious. Every time we are in trouble, we simply throw enough people at the problem, hope someone solves it and then glorify the dead. There is no planning, no effort to reduce the casualties / collateral damage. Plus I have a great premonition that the writing and the story are going to be crap.
