The Laptop/Notebook thread.

I bought The Vanishing of Ethan Carter on Steam and got both (normal and Redux) versions for the price of one. Now, I have an option to download both/either of the versions.

So, a quick question guys:

Will my laptop (specs mentioned above) be able to play the Redux version? At around 768p @ 30FPS?

Reason I'm asking is, I want to be sure before I dedicate the bandwidth and just download one of them.

Edit: Downloaded the Redux version and it's working totally fine.

Alpha17 san. .Do you know any site where I can get a good idea if a card is good enough for my needs? Some sites rate a 2GB GTX 950 much higher than a 4GB 960M and I don't understand stuff like shaders and all.

I use www.notebookcheck.net for the mobile cards but not finding anything good for desktop cards

^ Discrete desktop GPU's are always better than their comparative mobile equivalents because the unit does not have to throttle as aggressively to maintain a thermal target.

The numbers that are important when it comes to performance of these units is,

  • Core clock (higher is better, always although higher clocks entail more heat generation and power consumption)
  • Shader unit (shader unit(s) are the actual brick and mortar of every GPU chipset, higher this number generally equates to better performance, although AMD and nVidia have different ways of defining these units and you cannot make an apples to apples comparisons of their performance just by their shader unit number(s))

Notebook check is a good site for all sorts of GPU comparisons, you can also check on Anandtech's GPU Bench for the latest desktop GPU benchmarks. Although again your discretion needs to come into play because different sites have different benchmarks (and associated interpretation of data).

Hope this helps, Cheers!

Can't have everything for "cheap". Nowadays most laptops come with "chiclet" keys which, honestly, i really hate. I can type on them just fine but I won't say they are comfortable. There are many ultrabooks which should suit your need. You haven't mentioned your budget or required size.

lol the first card GTX 950 is a desktop card and the other GTX 960M is a laptop's. Suffix "M" stands for mobility. So yes when you compare the two, desktop's GTX 950 will be faster. As a thumb rule desktop GPU is always better than laptop's of the same model. But i didn't know that mobile GPUs come in 4GB memory size lol. From where did you get it?

Regarding the site you need to look up at various sites and cross-compare the data/benchmarks/reviews. Notebookcheck is great but can't rely on it alone. Just don't use sites which have only synthetic passmark numbers/gamedebate/cpuboss/gpuboss etc.
