My laptop's left click does not feel right , seems like there is dust accumulation obstructing the press ... on the brighter side it's responding OK :fear:

how do i clean the dust underneath without dismantling it ? :(

I have a Dell XPS M1330

Haven't seen crappier laptops than Dell's. :|

I don't think there's any particular driver for the processor as such but Win XP does a commendable job as a netbook OS. On the HP Mini, it easily gave 6 hours+ of life on a 6 cell battery. More important than the processor driver is how the other components use power. A look at Toshiba's custom optimization software for their lappies & netbooks leaves every other brand in the dust. Their cells easily clock 10 hours+ in real world scenario. I think Asus has a similar software for their line of netbooks (not sure though).

Going with Win XP is a pretty good option. A similar setup with Win 7 Starter gave me 45 mins of less battery life, plus it'as comparatively slower too.

Haven't used Ubuntu NR, but even Jolicloud is awesome ! Though one would miss the advanced functionalities of Windows given we don't have high broadband speeds here.

Edit: You can also try netbooks with ULV processors for even greater battery life but having used them for a couple of hours, I found it to be veryyyyy slowwwww ! :|

Yeah the only reason i am considering an XP switch is because its the platform that they want me to use for dev and I thought that id do it after doing some reading but a lot of ppl in forums weren't suggesting it. I wish I could have got a Toshiba but the price was a big factor. I'd suggest trying URMX if you get a chance its quite nifty although the drivers for some things not loading is quite annoying. There used to be a problem where the WiFi would just die but I haven't seen it with the install I have done.

No ULV for me

Lol.. how has that anything to do with Dell!

Dust accumulation.. cmon man!

Well it's just me & Dell. Have seen 10.. frigging 10 Dell laptops (not mine.. different friends who went with Dell just because everybody was buying them) break down within 3 months.. Some had trackpad problems, others had loose hinges, still others display issues, kaput motherboards etc etc. Maybe it's just me & Dell, but I wouldn't buy any of their's even if they were the last company running :| ..

I still remember the horror on my face after seeing Dell Studio when it was launched. I mean that thing was fugly, and it'as supposed to be a flagship product.

I aint saying other brands don't have issues, but not as much as Dell. One of my seniors uses an Acer & while I feel the build quality is downright pathetic, he never had any problems with it whatsoever since buying it. Personally been using a HP since early 2007 & apart from the battery going bonkers (due to a fault of my own), never had any issues with it.. And I treat it like hell nowadays just so that it goes down & I can get a new one ! :P

hardware issues are nothing new with Dell but they make it up with their top notch after service . but the golden days are only until you are covered under warranty or willing to shell out 10k for an extension . good part is you get free part replacement on site no questions asked ... god i wish i should have taken the 3yr warranty does not seem that expensive now compared to yearly renewals :(

had my mobo replaced once optical drive replaced twice and the entire outer plastic shell once ... golden days :samui:

coming back to the question ... Dust under Touchpad buttons , how to clean ?

Have you tried one of those keyboard cleaner cans? they come with an extension that blows compressed air and clears things out. Perhaps that might solve your issue. The only problem I can see is that the attachment wont fit under the touchpad buttons but its worth a try.

@Dell being crappy: I personally haven't owned one but my parents did and the DVD Drive got mothered and since then they have been using an Acer with no problems. My sis took the Dell and sold it, she is the proud owner of a Mac now.

Agree their AFS is damn good, but damn expensive too :P .. But then one of my friends has a HP lappy (14 incher, bought from Gulf) and his MB went kaput. So we went to this dealer & he suggested taking a 3 year AFS for 5.5k wherein we got the MB covered & replaced. It wasn't on site AFS, but pretty neat nonetheless. And yes, no questions asked. Still Dell gives warranty against spills & drips & sledgehammers & drops & every damn thing, so it definitely has an edge under CompleteCover (or CompleteCare ?), but we shouldn't be needing warranty in the 1st place should we ? :harhar:

And for cleaning the touchpad, you will have to dis-assemble the lappy. Until you have some experience in this, I would strongly advice against it. :|

Don't think they would work as the nozzle won't fit into the creaks of the trackpad :|

just checked the buttons even have an edged out border under the surface to stop the button from popping out :(

dismantle is the only option , perhaps after it becomes an absolute necessity :good:

I'd say put some more money in and hit up a company like Acer [i really like them] or there is an HCL one that the guys at the shop tried pushing off on me and they said its pretty good. The others are a bit too pricey to even be called serious netbooks.

great avatar, reminds me of that japanese football game i used to play when i was a small child.

Captain majid something.

^^^

Yes that's the arabic name for the cartoon. Its real name is Captain Tsubasa and the only reason I put it up was because of the fact that I found my old tapes and was watching it the other day.

@kunal: I was reading on a forum last night that you can use an electrical cleaner (whatever that is) and apparently its a liquid that goes in between your keys that cleans out any dust/dirt around the connectors. Now, this wont completely clean out the stuff under the button but it should keep the connectors clean to allow for better contact with the board. And your not the only one having touchpad button issues, seems to be a plague going around.

Ok so this is Macguyver 1101 lol. If you get one and then take the tip and heat it and use a nose plier, you might actually be able to make it thin enough to push air into a tighter space. The only problem I see with this is getting it thin enough to get the job done. I'd suggest slow heat application and a firm press with a plier to flatten the end out and then use a heavy set of scissors to trim the edges off and leave just enough to blow air through
