I know this game is old, but since I finished it a week ago, I just couldn't resist writing a review for it. :)

Story:

The plot centers around a backwater village called Doolin. Whats so great about a teensy village, you might ask. Well, you can enter the Netherworld through it. You have two playable characters: a girl named Ellen and a trenchcoat wearing man called Keats. Ellen comes to Doolin when she recieves a letter from her mother, whom she had thought to be dead long ago. Keats ends up at Doolin when he recieves a phone call from a mysterious woman crying for help. It then turns into a story where you run here and there to uncover the mystery of Doolin, by talking to the villagers during the day and by entering the Netherworld at night.

Gameplay:

Gameplay is fairly straight forward. The Netherworld is filled with creatures. They are your enemies and your weapons. Confused? These creatures are called Ids. What you have to do is beat them up a few times. WHen they are exhausted, their soul will appear and you absorb it. Each Id you absorb will give you a new attack ability. You can assign Ids to your controller buttons to unleash fire attacks, wind attacks, ice, earth and what not. You can actually see the creature coming out to perform the attack.

Now, the best part of this game is absorbing the Ids. How do you do it? You press R1 and then yank your controller! Yes, you actually have to move your controller to reel in those buggers. Welcome to the world of SIXAXIS motion detection! You will have to move your controller in certain patterns depending upon the enemy. Each time you encounter an enemy with a new jerking pattern, a tutorial will pop up and tell you in detail as to how to move your controller.

During combat, you can control your camera as you see fit with the left analog stick. This was quite a relief for me after having played Genji, where you have no control over the camera. You can also "lock on" at an enemy to ensure that your ranged attacks hit them spot-on.

This game is divided into several chapters. At the beginning of each chapter, you will be asked to choose between Ellen and Keats. You can choose them in any order you like, for you will be basically going through the same terrain, more or less. The only difference will be the creatures you encounter. There are a lot of creatures that are "exclusive" to a particular character. For example, Keats will never encounter "wind types" and Ellen will never encounter "Ice types". Even the attack pattern of their Ids will be different for the same Id. This reduces the monotony of having to go through the same map twice. The basic difference in the combat styles is that Ellen can bring forth her Id and move while it is attacking, while Keats cannot move but can hit harder. This forces you to re-think your strategies depending upon who you are playing with.

The game also features side-quests through which you can unlock some Ids that are not available in the Netherworld.

Sound and graphics:

The music is great, fitting with the mood of the game more or less perfectly. The CG scenes are brilliant. The ingame graphics are also pretty good. with detailed characters and well rendered backggrounds. Some of the story is shown through "comic book style". which was interesting to say the least. The dialogues are shown in text boxes, which is sort of a let down as you would expect voice acting during the PS3 era. Also, the load times between screens can become a little irritating. This could be reduced by installing the game on the hard disk, but I am not sure about that. As I said before, the camera system is great. It puts less strain on your eyes. Its good for people like me who have a little weak eyesight.

Replayibility:

After having finished the game once, you would want to go through the game again just to make sure you complete the collection of Ids and power them up to the max.

Conclusion:

A very fun game to play. The whole idea is a novel one and not a spin -off on one of the popular ones in the market.
