THE DIRECTOR
well, i heard about this before, but here are some good pics of the DARPA Urban Challenge and axion racing. They will be using the PS3 to drive there car....... Nice feature to have.... if Home doesn't come out in time. "Never heard of the DARPA challenge? It's great. Real cars are given robot drivers, and they race. Winner is covered in artificial, robotic glory. This year one of the leading contenders in the challenge is Axion Racing's Spirit, pictured above. And the gaming relevance? Why, it's "eyes" are a PS3. Running Linux, the PS3 is responsible for "realtime stereoscopic sensor data", reading terrain info sent from cameras attached to the car's underbelly" "The Sony PS3 was built with a new processor developed specially for the PlayStation console. The Cell processor, as it is known, is based on the PowerPC processor by IBM. Axion Racing's PS3 has four processors working with Yellow Dog Linux to quickly examine information from a RGB road finding camera" - Axion Racing check out the DARPA site: http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/index.asp Team Axion Racing site: http://www.axionracing.com/Tools/PS3/PS3Index_Saint.htm http://kotaku.com/gaming/playstation-3/ps3...race-317027.php
