Spec Ops: The Line is a provocative and gripping third-person modern military shooter that challenges players’ morality by putting them in the middle of unspeakable situations where unimaginable choices affecting human life must be made.

Many gamers have been waiting for Spec Ops The Line ever since the debut trailer hit during the 2009 Video Game Awards. After a failed closed multiplayer beta and a long silence during it’s development, Spec Ops The Line is here and delivers a story that will make you make choices that will alter your personality.

The main thing that makes this game stand out from the crowded world of shooters is the world you’re immersed in. Dubai is a destroyed warzone ever since the sandstorms rolled in. Colonal Konrad was in charge of the 33rd and was sent in to evacuate the civilians before the storms got there. They were too slow and time was running out so Konrad defies the order to bail on the mission and condemns himself and the entire 33rd.

You play Captain Walker and you take your two man team into Dubai to answer a distress call and evacuate any survivors, and locate Konrad. During your mission you find out that the city does have survivors and they will do anything to survive. Once your fighting for your life against the locals you begin running into CIA and members of the rouge 33rd. Taking on both sides during the campaign will test Walker as a leader and a soldier and he has to make some impossible decisions in order to keep his team alive.

The one thing achievement and trophy hunters have to keep in mind is once you complete the game you can replay each chapter over again in any order to make different choices that will alter cinematics.

Overall, Spec Ops The Line offers a campaign with a story that will place you impossible situations while on the battlefield. A cover system helps keep you alive when you need to reload or regain health. The narrative keesp you guessing to try and see how far Walker will get pushed in order to complete his mission. With a four to five hour campaign and a multiplayer experience that offers many modes for both solo and team players. This is worth a rent for those who want a great campaign and worth a $30 price tag so if you’re unsure if you want to push out a full $60 for this game, rent it or wait for a sale.

When you begin it’s all bravado and wisecracks when you’re fighting off enemies. By the end, Walker is grunting, swearing and even crying as does the same job. It is, quite genuinely, a masterclass in depicting a game narrative. Cutscenes might advance the story, but it’s whilst you play that you realise the effect of it.

The reason that brilliant narrative is buried under such a seemingly uninspired setting is because once you go “oh f**king hell, this is where we’re headed?” everything seems quite a lot darker. Every action you’re forced to take is another step into madness, sadness and badness(™). And don’t go starting with any of your, “well if the story’s the best thing about it, why isn’t it a book?” nonsense, because it’s playing that game you already know that makes the story quite so excellent. Spec Ops: The Line is, essentially, unmarketable, but that’s kind of the point.
