Metal Gear Online

Developed by: Kojima Productions

Published by: Konami

Genre: 3rd person Action shooter

Producer: Hideo Kojima

Players: 16 online

Release Date: Q4 2008

An online-oriented entry in the Metal Gear franchise, following up on the success of the online portion of MGS3 Subsistence on PS2 and MGS Portable Ops on PSP. Metal Gear Online allows up to 16 players to sneak and attack in online combat scenarios. The game uses a new team system called SOKKU, which allows you quickly and easily access info on your allies.

Gamespot Preview

The MGO demo showed off a six-on-six match between members of the development team. The battle took place in a large, weathered camp setting that offered plenty of places for players to hide or lay in wait. From the looks of the demo, the core gameplay sticks pretty close to what you'd expect out of an online Metal Gear, although a number of new additions make the action considerably more interesting.

The new SOP system--the meaning of which we're currently unsure of--is a neat, high-tech way to promote teamwork. Basically, SOP revolves around the nanomachines that are injected into all the soldiers on the battlefield. This links you to your teammates and lets you keep tabs on their location and physical condition. In addition, you're able to benefit from their discoveries on the battlefield. For example, if one of your team has spotted landmines on the field, you'll see their outlines on the ground when you approach them. This tech serves especially handily when you manage to hack an opponent's nanomachines and get all the info they have on their teammates, which you'll then share with yours.

We also saw some other, slightly less dramatic gameplay refinements that should nevertheless come in pretty handy. You'll now be able to stop yourself halfway up a ladder, which is useful for lobbing grenades over the top of a wall if you keep yourself just out of sight. Of course, you can also rely on old standbys such as cardboard boxes and nudie magazines (now in high-res) to help you deal with your enemies. The action seems pretty hectic, but the team element is going to require some strategy to make the most use of it.

The visuals in Metal Gear Online pop out, thanks to the game's use of the MGS4 engine. As such, there's a respectable amount of detail to be scrutinized, and, most importantly, a ton of little touches to complement the main action. We saw clouds of dust kicked up when bullets tore into the ground as gunfire began to focus on a player. Explosions and chunks of objects went flying nicely, obscuring the field of vision for players, which will allow you to maneuver in for kills. The battle took place in an environment that looked to be about the right size for 12 people to run around in. There seemed to be enough room to let a player run off and catch their breath, but not so much that they could just run and hide. The animation varied, given the game's early development status, but things were looking pretty good already.

Metal Gear online will see an open beta in Japan, though plans for betas in other territories haven't been announced.

Based on what we saw, Metal Gear Online is looking like an appealing new branch on the Metal Gear family tree. The gameplay, in terms of individual mechanics and team emphasis, seems like a good fit for an online game. Though a Japanese beta has been announced, there's no word on a US one at this time, although Konami reps stated they would very much like to have a wide beta that would include other territories. The same vagueness suits the game's release date, which is yet to be determined in Japan and the rest of the world. Look for more on Metal Gear Online later this fall from the Tokyo Game Show.

Metal Gear Online - First Gameplay Details and

The metal Gear Solid Online beta kicks of today, if you got in, you are having a blast right now, if not Autumn Thread got you covered as he got in into the beta and shares his first impressions and details about the gameplay of MGO. The details include, what has been changed, controls, and summary about the game lobbies and more.

Details:

The combat is really f**king cool, there’s different lobbies, each named after a MGS character ; Snake, Otacon, Liquid etc (yeah, 95% of the people are in Snake lobby).

- It’s rather annoying to change to first person mode (L1+triangle) especially when you’re fighting people. The box has made a return! It’s pretty funny that I managed to kill quite from a cardboard box that totally didn’t fit in with the environment.

- There are only two maps in the beta. One looks like the arctic and the other is something like the middle east that we see in the trailers and gameplay footage.

- Voice chat is supported as well as typing. To bring up chat window is left or right on the d-pad.

- To change to the position on your back once laying down is triangle, tapping triangle and holding the joystick in whatever direction will allow you to roll in that said direction.

- Grenades are cool, so are stun knifes.

- No slow down, solid frame rate.

- The camera control can be customized in the options menu, at first it was a pain. You can invert etc and if you so wish, have it player controlled entirely.

- Difficulty wise, it’s not hard to get the hang of at all. It took a bit of ‘mashing’ to find out how to roll onto the back of your character

- The visuals are ‘nice’ but they seem to be a bit unpolished right now as the game is still in the beta phase however, character models are very detailed.

- More interesting is the way you can customize how your character performs. Think of it something like the talent system in WoW. You can alter how fast you run, skill with certain weapons and whatnot.

- As for the ‘hacking’, If you mean the ability to hack out the nano things from enemies, no he hasn’t learned how to that yet.

- You press L1 to change into the aiming mode. you can change to free aim by pressing square.

- This isn’t something related to the game mechanics or whatever but some crazy a*s player joined my game and actually killed people by sneaking up on them, strangling them until they were blacked out (you have an oxygen meter under the health bar) and then would proceed to head shot them. Crazy.

He had a better look around at the rank system or ’score sheet’.

You’ve got your normal kills, deaths etc like most other shooter games. You get your headshots counted also which brings me onto the next thing I tried out;

The Sniper Rifle!

10x zoom for your evil intentions!

Once you fire it the recoil is pretty intense, you totally lose your aim if you wanted to take another shot.

Controls

X - crouch > crawl positions (while running: diving roll)

O - reload ammo

Triangle - standing: salute (spreads this aura thing around to local team-mates, it’s like a blue mesh so you can see them behind walls etc) crouching: point emote (?)

Square - toggle autoaim

D-pad:

left & right: toggle display of chat window

control sticks: left - move character, right - move camera

R3: toggle over shoulder view in aim mode from left to right.

R1 - fire

R2 - secondary fire while in aim or toggle weapon menu

L1 - aim

L2 - toggle item mini menu

Metal Gear Online Beta Delayed Indefinitely

From: http://ps3.kombo.com/article.php?artid=6667

________________________________________________________________

Well, we haven't even been able to login and try out the Metal Gear Online beta yet and Konami is already delaying the release in Europe and America. Originally planned as a worldwide release, the Metal Gear Online beta is now only available in Japan.

According to the official Japanese website, Konami has delayed the release of the beta in all regions outside of Japan until they are able to stabilize the servers to reach demand in the land of the rising sun. After they are able to control the user demand in Japan, they will open the beta to other outside regions. Unfortunately for us, there is no set date as to when this will occur.

If there is any good news coming out of this delay, it appears that Konami will be increasing the beta period for an additional 5 days. What was once originally planned to last until May 6 will now close on May 11.

IMPORTANT NOTICE for all

METAL GEAR ONLINE PREMIERE BETA players

We would like to thank all players for their keen interest in taking part in the beta test. However, we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server.

We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused. We would like to add that due to the above reasons, we will be making the following changes to the schedule:

1) Starting date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/4/2008 23:00(PDT)

2) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT)

IMPORTANT: Please note that your voucher code will only be valid up until 05/06/2008, so please make sure to register them by then.
