MightySkate
^^yes you can surf the net and you can watch your divx movies . It also supports different IMs. It's not a full fledged linux but enough to satisfy your entertainment needs.
KnackChap
one of the reasons why we dont havew much homebrew on the ps3,despite having linux and all ,is because sony acted like an a*s and locked the RSX(graphic card) access, when you boot other OS(good for them, bad for us)
THE DIRECTOR
^, for sure, bad for ...... us good for them.... but still, much more open than xbox. plus i only mentioned yellow dog, but thats cos sony wanted to have an official Linux to advertise. but im trying to get some solid info, as again, not confirmed. but u can run OSX and Windows as well...... through emulation. but again, not confirmed. im surprised no one else has installed it. its great feature........... will list other.... maybe be better Linux OS that have been recommended for the PS3

THE DIRECTOR
yeah, some guy showed a video of xp being emulated on the ps3 yeah, i think i saw that, but that where issue of validity comes in. no hard proof it works...... i could a fan boy trying to piss of the xbots. LOL oh, and another reliable OS: Fedora and also adding DVD region free-play back : VLC for Linux and there is a new board : www.ps3linuxboards.com its still new, but hopefully in the near future, things will change. khanak
The region free player and divx are really useful, looks like I wont be needing my old dvd player afterall. But without access to the graphics card, do the dvds play smoothly?
THE DIRECTOR
to be honest, my PS3 is back in the UK, after i had installed yellow dog, i didn't really come to install vlc, but i heard that, Fedora played movies very smoothly. but then its been some time and there are a few other apps out. need to do more search.but to be honest, not alot of people have installed Linux yet.......... im surprised. but i will be getting my PS3 soon, so then i can try out different apps and post up a few reviews. so has anyone using the Yellow Dog or any other Linux app? Hot-Drake-Pixel
I am personally more inclined to UBUNTU as this very lightweight and has killer looks. I have created the partition on my PS3 from day one but haven't tried installing UBUNTU or any other linux on it as I don't have a bluetooth or USB keyboard yet with me and it is a prerequisite for os installation, if I am not mistaken. Check these out. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls...amp;btnG=Search
khanak
^^ So you cant install linux without a bluetooth/USB mouse and keyboard? Thats really wierd.
vinitwins
^ USB keyboard costs ~300 bucks, and i guess using the gamepad to enter your admin pwd is not recommended V
KnackChap
u need a keyboard before installing or it wont continue after a certain point ,no idea about mouse
Hot-Drake-Pixel
^^ So you cant install linux without a bluetooth/USB mouse and keyboard? Thats really wierd. Mouse is not really required. But keyboard is required that too just for installation. This is simply because SIX-AXIS is recognized by XMB. While installing LINUX key board is required coz linux won't recognize the SIX-AXIS until it is installed and required kernel is opened for SIX-AXIS. Once that is done you can do away with your keyboard. But SIX-AXIS can not replace the keyboard considering usability. makes sense?
