Hot-Drake-Pixel
had installed yellowdog on ps3 back in england Just a long shot. Can I use my laptop as keyboard and go ahead with the linux installation? I am not really a desktop person, hence dont want to buy a keyboard just for installation. I am ready for the Linus* from day one with partition and sh*t but its the keyboard Edit: Linux im don't think so mate, but then im not too sure. CC, KC or Vin............ is it possible..... but dude, just buy the flexi keyboard, the one that u can fold up....... i bought one for £2 + £2 delivery. well worth it mate. ...... i got from ebay You know what? My best mate in London suggested me this one while I was about to buy my PS3 but I quashed his idea then. But now I see the point. It would not be too much of a baggage for a frequent traveler like me yet it will solve my purpose. One big favor. Link please, if you may. Edit: Wish I would be referred like CC, KC or Vin someday. Coz I do ample research on stuffs i m interested in.

vinitwins
a totally n00b question - when you format & partition your ps3's hdd before installing linux, will it simply allocate space or completely format the hdd - if the latter is true, what data would you lose (all downloads? game saves?) V
Ne0
^^ don't know anything about ps3, but formatting is done for the purpose of having a file system. And creating partition generally should not do any formatting. First u create a partition, then specifically format choosing the type of file system you want ( /, ext etc). The above is as per pc, I doubt ps3 would be anything different, as Linux is still the same !

Ne0
^^ u dont need a pm tool for that. When u install linux, it automatically shows u all the current partitions and the free (unformatted) space if present. You can specify the new partition to be either in the used space or the free space !
Hot-Drake-Pixel
Here is what I have done for the partitioning and linux thing. I created partition early on, hence not much of game data or media on PS3. PS3 allows to take complete back up of everything on it to an external HDD. I had stuff of about 5gb on. Backed them up. Created partition 10gb(for linux)~50gb. Bad thing then was, you could either go 10:50 or 50:10. No other choices then. I don't if it has changed with subsequent firmware updates. My partition is ready for linux. But I am yet to put linux as I dont have USB keyboard for it. My vote goes for UBUNTU as it light, visually brilliant and effective. I have done that way and restored everything once the partitioning is done. But it is better to get the partitioning done early on before you pile up tons of data onto your PS3. lastAvenger
I think Ubuntu is better than Yellow Dog on any given day but then this YD for PS3 could be just customised for PS3, so i can't say for sure which will be better on a PS3 but on Desktops, Ubuntu > YD
MarketTantrik
Yellow Dog has traditionally been a distribution focused on IBM's PowerPC hardware. So they have been able to translate their expertise to the Cell.

vinitwins
yes, but our apprehension about installing linux is that we need to format the hdd and redownload everything (which is not worth the time/effort as downloading large files over psn is a chore in itself) care to provide a link that explains how you can backup the game demos that are installed on the hdd? vinitwins
googled a bit and yes, there's a backup utility available on the XMB itself which is intended for this very purpose - can backup & restores *everything* to a USB drive (FAT32) V
