CarbonCore
I don't think PS3 backs up your demo and video/music files. I had about 12 gigs of demos and 10+gigs of video files. Yet the backup utility created only 1.5GB of backup data.
lastAvenger
I think it just backs up your settings, save games and other crucial stuff
vinitwins
i think it backs up everything it can (depends on DRM) - i inserted a 4gb usbkey and while backing up it said the target drive needed an additional 2970MB of space to backup everything... Snake
Well i did a bit of digging around on the official PS3 forums and ppl there say that u CAN backup demos and vids on to a external HDD. Here is what a few members had to say I have backed up my entire drive at least twice now..YDL install. I have an 80GB extrenal USB drive and used the backup utility. Format the external 80GB as FAT32, Backup, format 10/50, install YDL, restore..."everything" is back; pictures, music, videos, and yes games and demos Yes, there is a way. But it requires an External Hard Disk Drive, Or maybe even an iPod. As long as you have something that has more than 60 Gigabytes worth of memory you will be able to back up pretty much everything on your PS3. vinitwins
the fat32 limitation is not 32gb (as incorrectly posted earlier, it's 2TB - 32gb is the limitation of the format utility bundled with windows xp) use this tool to format your usb/external hdds and the ps3 will be able to access the full capacity of your storage device: http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm +1 vinit! nameless
Just a general query. I got a ps3 last month from Sony World with bill and warranty. Will replacing the hard disk (with higher space) myself void the warranty. If yes ,will Sony authorized dealers replace the hard disk if we ask them to do the same. I wanted to know this, so that I can install linux in my ps3.

Lots of video available on UTube showing on how to do it. Sony dealers wont do it for you. You might want to check with service centre folks. But there will be expenses involved. However Sony recommends taking back up of everything on your current PS3 HDD before you upgrade. So to what capacity you are planning to upgrade?
