I just hope it's not a rumour

If this is not a rumor, than all the people who are thinking of buying a PS3 will get confused !

GOD DAMN IT SONY !!

relax beeches.. :P even if a new one comes out in 2012, Its still 2 years from now..You wouldn't want to be stuck with old-gen hardware then. IMHO, 2014 could be when it sees the light of the day. Then again its just my random prediction

Sony was stupid to go with its unique processor in the first place, because in spite of the performance boost, the fact is that its uniqueness made it harder to program for. At least with 360 it was Intel inside, so there was already a lot of commonality with PC thru x86.

Anyway, the fact is that the more processors advance, the harder it is to keep pushing ahead, and so the number of competitive chipmakers is dwindling down to just the few big giants (Intel, AMD, IBM, Nvidia) who can make the advanced chips - and even some of those may fall by the wayside. Eventually, it may just get down to 1 or 2 who can make the grade, once things get powerful enough. That in itself may force more common ground among the consoles - but then what kind of choice will the consumer have? Hopefully more fresh innovations like motion control will allow the console makers to differentiate themselves from one another.

X360 uses a tri-core PowerPC, not intel.

i think sony made the rite choice and shud stick to advancements in the same architecture or what would be the diff b/w a PC and a console? there won't be anything 'special' that a console might be able to offer to developers. anyway both sony & ms and even nintendo are looking to offer so many more capabilities besides gaming.

Sony's first party studios have shown a lot of what the cell architecture is capable of. and knowing the pig heads sony are they aren't gonna bow down to developer pressures. . also, i don't think sony is anywhere near recovering it's investment that it put in the cell development. so we might pretty much see the next generation PS to use the cell.

still according to me the next gen is atleast 3 yrs away. add mayb another year for poor chaps like me who have to wait a bit for the price to stabilize.

If Sony does indeed go with a modified version of the Larabee... we may start seeing equally good graphics in multi-plats. So that's one good thing about ditching the Cell.

it's not like multi-plats looks sh*t compared to 360, now it's a rare stance of it(r u living under a rock or what?), go play Batman AA bitch on 360 and PS3, then come here and laugh at your statement...

Naughty Dog co-founder Wells said that they are more comfortable with the ps3 and they are not itching for new hardware for at least 5-6 years. i think Sony may change the design a little to ease development work on ps3 (currently optimized coding for ps3 is a limitless pit), but the basics will remain like today.

i heard Naughty Dog coders are already take sessions on coding for the ps3 - and i hope others learn and churn out more exclusive titles. ps4, right now, is not required.

and to all those who dont know, the design has been changed even in past - may be behind the scenes. i was in tokyo when ps3 was launched. and at a company dinner, i met my colleague's husband who was on the team who created the ps3. i was obviously asking him crazy questions to which he must be laughing in his mind. he advised me to buy the ps3 there in japan asap (i didnt becoz of the voltage thingie) because he said that soon the made in japan units will be replaced everywhere by china units as soon as bulk production starts. and those new units will be slightly different from the ones selling then in japan. in about 3-4 months, there was a price drop in japan from 80k yen to 60k yen - and obviously the new units from china came in. what changed inside i dont know. but somehow i feel that guy was right. the earlier japan units had backward compatibility for ps2 titles as well.
