silentassassin
PS3 hack is 95% software, 5% hardware - could run homebrew/copies/PS2 games Speaking to the BBC, Geohot has revealed that his PS3 hack is around 95 percent software based and 5 percent hardware based. Moreover, he said his hack could be used for a variety of things including homebrew, PS2 games and piracy (of which the latter he is not supporting). Mr Hotz said that he had begun the hack last summer when he had spent three weeks analysing the hardware. After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking the console, which he described as a "very secure system". He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware and 95% software". silentassassin
GeoHot tells BBC: I can do whatever I want with PS3 and nothing is unhackable Self proclaimed PS3 hacker George Hotz has told the BBC that he can do whatever he wants with the PS3 and it's just like he has an 'awesome new power'. Likewise, he added that he hasn't FULLY hacked the system but can TRICK it to do anything. "It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," Mr Hotz told BBC News. "I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it." Sony said it was "investigating the report" and would "clarify the situation" when it had more information. Mr Hotz said that he was continuing to work on the hack and, once finished, would publish details online in a similar way to his previous iPhone exploits. In particular, he said, he would publish details of the console's "root key", a master code that once known would make it easier for others to decipher and hack other security features on the console. He said his motivation was "curiosity" and "opening up the platform". "To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3," he said. "I have one game, but I've never really played it." Opening the system could allow people to install other operating systems on their console and play homemade games, he said. In addition, he said, the hack would allow people to play older PS2 games on their consoles. News Source: BBC
silentassassin
Sony 'looking into' PS3 hack allegations According to reports, a Sony spokesperson is 'investigating' reports that the PS3 has been hacked and indicates that they will clarify the situation as soon as they have the information. So essentially, a pretty blank statement. We contacted Sony and a spokesperson confirmed that the company is looking into the issue. "We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information," said the statement. http://www.incgamers.com/News/20648/sony-i...ack-allegations

theneurotoxin
I thing hackers get away with such stuff by claiming their hacks aren't intended to support piracy. Here's more info: Geohot himself won't be coding anything that directly attacks these systems, and reckons that his hacking blog isn't intended for those looking for user-friendly Jailbreak-style software like his various iPhone unlocking tools. "If you are expecting some tool to be released from this blog like blackra1n, stop reading now," he posted. "If you have a Slim and are complaining this hack won't work for you, stop reading now. WE DO NOT CONDONE PIRACY, NOR WILL WE EVER. If you are looking for piracy, stop reading now. If you want to see the direction in which I will take this blog, read the early entries in the iPhone one. Information on this blog is for research purposes only." Read the complete article for more info on how Geohot is actually trying to bypass the PS3's security system. Mel81x
He deserves a pat on his back and even though it took a while to get it done, this is definitely great news. Now that he has hacked it, Sony is going to go back to the drawing board with the next console and play the tag game where they invent something new to see how long it stays secure. As for the regular consumer, this might be good news once people start running homebrews and other nice apps on the PS3. However, I think I'll still go with buying my games. Three generations of this console and I still haven't bought a single pirated game out of respect to the development teams that work hard on them.
