TOKYO, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Sony Corp will likely post an operating profit of about 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) for the October-December quarter, helped by a recovery in its video game and LCD TV operations, the Nikkei newspaper said.

While Sony has been widely expected to post its first profit in five quarters, the Nikkei's estimate is higher than the market consensus for an operating profit of 74.2 billion yen in a poll of 7 analysts by Thomson Reuters

Sony has seen sales of its PlayStation 3 game console grow sharply after a price cut earlier last year. The video game business will post its first operating profit in four quarters in the October-December period, the Nikkei said.

The electronics giant has also enjoyed strong sales of LCD TVs and payroll cuts and consolidation of facilities have helped that business return to the break-even level on an operating basis, the Nikkei said.

lol what 1 billion yen is 11 million dollars, 10 billion yen is 110 million and 100 billion yen is 1.1 billion dollars.

1.1 billion is what sony made from oct to dec and thats a lot of money.

Waitamin waitamin - this is just quarterly stuff, right? And that too operating profit for the whole corporation?

They are still scheduled to post a massive loss at the end of the FY. Just to put things in perspective Operating Profit for the year - Q1 (-268), Q2 (-362), Q3 (-60), Q4 (10.3). FY OP forecast (-685.9).

Also, their revenue for Mar ending Qtr is supposed to dip by 28% as compared to Dec. This will make it on par with Q2, and slightly higher than Q1. Basically Sony's good fortune for this quarter is the holiday season. As a corporation they've managed to do well on the electronics. Let me see if i can get some divisional breakups - which will give an idea on how much their PS division will benefit.

But it’s forecasting a 95 billion yen ($1 billion) loss for the fiscal year through March 2010, marginally better than the 98.9 billion yen loss it suffered the previous fiscal year. That was Sony’s first annual loss in 14 years.
