Karooo
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Microsoft Corp. /quotes/comstock/15*!msft/quotes/nls/msft (MSFT 29.41, +0.25, +0.86%) said Thursday its fiscal second-quarter net income rose to $6.66 billion, or 74 cents a share, from $4.17 billion, or 47 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Revenue for the period ended in December rose 14% to $19.02 billion, Microsoft said. Analysts had expected the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant to post earnings of 59 cents a share, and $17.9 billion in revenue, according to Thomson Reuters data. Microsoft's results included $1.7 billion in revenue deferred from prior quarters, related to pre-sales and a marketing program for its recently-released Windows 7 operating system. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/microsoft...rter-2010-01-28 5.2 Million Xbox 360 sold in Q2 http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=386083

Bulovski
Win 7 pushed up their sales quite a bit after the pos aka Vista. This year it will be Office 2010 (if the damn thing ever releases - people are still upgrading to 2007). E&D division - sigh. In the doldrums like the Game division at Sony - probably worse. This year at least they should make up some money with Reach and Fable 3.

Bulovski
^^ you should care . See this: They can pump more money on 1st party AAA games secure 3rd party exclusives and much more
HundredProofSam
They can pump more money on 1st party AAA game That'll be something, but MS is too near-sighted with Xbox to properly invest in first-party software. It shows in their pursuit of timed exclusivity, and in the way they designed the Xbox 360 hardware. Most of their big exclusives aren't even first-party eg: Gears of War, Mass Effect. Sooner or later all third party devs (including Epic) are gonna see that there's no logic in doing exclusives anymore. MS is gonna need a good set of first-party studios when that happens. They seriously need to get Rare off that XBL avatar gig. Such a waste of resources. peace
Bulovski
+100 - get Rare off XBL crap and get a good Viva Pinata out and they will reap in the numbers. Pour more money into Lionhead Studios and make them work on more than one game at a time. They should also bend over for Valve and ask to speed up HL3 / get out new TF / Portal and make L4D a yearly franchise.

I like rare, Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts was pretty good, kameo was decent but apart from those 2 and fable 360 does not really have any non shooting title and i really dont see MS changing that. In terms of Long run there is a good possibility that a new IP will come up if either of the company that you speak of decides to switch. but MS might be paying them to well to make such a move. Why should they? ODST was the only exclusive last year in the top 10 sales in US. They've got a good thing going on shooters because of XBL. And the 360 is also home to some great RPGs. Karooo
That's why Sony went with such a different architecture because of the studios they had, games nowadays are expensive to make that's why third party exclusivity is tough, Microsoft will have no problem this gen though, 360 has sold very well but Microsoft should really start buying some great studios otherwise it will be tough to support their next Xbox. They have way more money than Sony, I don't understand why they aren't buying, eg: Platinum Games made the 360 sing the amount of effects on Bayonetta, the effective usage of the 360 architecture, the amount of polish and quality was first party like according to Digital Foundry such an impressive game on the 360, I don't think 360 will be fully utilized like this again this Gen though because Microsoft doesn't care imo. HundredProofSam
They should also bend over for Valve and ask to speed up HL3 / get out new TF / Portal and make L4D a yearly franchise. See, but that's still 3rd party. For all of Gabe Newell's hate talk, sooner or later EA (who handles Valve's console ports) is gonna realise that they can't ignore the growing PS3 install base. And this is EA we're talking about; the one publisher least keen on platform-exclusivity. MS can't count on Valve games as being exclusive to their console forever and since its EA who publishes Valve console games, bending over for Valve won't really help. Dont know about rare , but MS might be doing the right thing by focussing/reducing on core competencies and the trick is working for them. In terms of Long run there is a good possibility that a new IP will come up if either of the company that you speak of decides to switch. but MS might be paying them to well to make such a move. A lot of the success they've seen with their exclusives like Gears of War is down to the fact that they had the 360 out 15 months before the competition. They had their dev kits out earlier, when Sony was still working on the PS3 and no one knew what Nintendo was up to. So guys like Epic and Bioware saw an opportunity on the 360 (with games they were probably already working on), and with neither the PS3 or Wii in sight, they saw sense in signing an exclusivity deal with MS, who probably helped with development costs (since it was a new platform and development costs were much higher earlier in the life cycle). At this point in time, no one is gonna sign an exclusivity deal like the one Epic signed with MS to have the entire Gears of War series exclusive to the 360. The only exclusives they can really count on are Halo and Gears, and they can't keep milking those with yearly releases (although they seem to be trying with Halo). As for coming up with a new IP when someone switches, it's not that easy. Besides Lionhead, Turn 10 and Rare, they got nothing. God knows how long Bungie will keep doing Halo games. So like I said, they need to stop being so short-sighted. They need to think ahead a bit and become self reliant for their AAA games now rather than waiting for Epic, Bioware or Bungie to force them into it. peace

Pay Valve if required for exclusivity - they have the HL franchise which will move millions if it ever comes out. And they have L4D - which is a sweet franchise. MS not only needs to think about the future but they need to keep their biggest fanbase (hardcore Gears / COD / Halo players on XBL) engaged till the next exclusive shooter comes out. MS seems to betting a lot on Natal and going after the Wii family market. It's a good business strategy - that segment is so much larger than the hardcore gamer segment. And surprisingly they spent bucketloads. MS strategy could be two pronged - go after family crowd with Natal and XBL activities like 1 vs 100, and keep the hardcore XBL shooters hooked on Halo / Gears. They really need to get the Halo 2 crowd on next gen and stop wasting money maintaining backward compatibility of XBL. And they should follow the COD formula - pay publishers to push out annual titles. Also, tell Mistwalker to get off their a*s and deliver on their next RPG.
