Microsoft posts record sales for second quarter.

Pay Valve if required for exclusivity - they have the HL franchise which will move millions if it ever comes out. And they have L4D - which is a sweet franchise. MS not only needs to think about the future but they need to keep their biggest fanbase (hardcore Gears / COD / Halo players on XBL) engaged till the next exclusive shooter comes out. MS seems to betting a lot on Natal and going after the Wii family market. It's a good business strategy - that segment is so much larger than the hardcore gamer segment. And surprisingly they spent bucketloads. MS strategy could be two pronged - go after family crowd with Natal and XBL activities like 1 vs 100, and keep the hardcore XBL shooters hooked on Halo / Gears. They really need to get the Halo 2 crowd on next gen and stop wasting money maintaining backward compatibility of XBL. And they should follow the COD formula - pay publishers to push out annual titles.

Also, tell Mistwalker to get off their a*s and deliver on their next RPG.

The Half-life franchise won't be half as big today as it was when the first two came out, so I don't think pumping money into that makes much sense. They're better off paying them for a new Valve IP, which I still think is a slippery slope.

Both Sony and Nintendo have strong first party support, so even when the hardware isn't doing so well, they know they will have robust software support. The PS3 was in the dumps, but first party games kept coming. Third party game sales are poor on the Wii, but look at their first party game sales. Things are going well with MS and the Xbox 360 now, but if they find themselves in third place in the next generation, who's gonna bail them out? At that time, no matter how much money they throw at a third party dev, they won't sign with MS if they don't see their game selling on the platform. So if the next Xbox finds itself in a similar position as the first, they will need all the first-party support they can get. You can't rely on Halo forever

As for Natal, that sh*t is gonna fail. Guaranteed.

That'll be something, but MS is too near-sighted with Xbox to properly invest in first-party software. It shows in their pursuit of timed exclusivity, and in the way they designed the Xbox 360 hardware. Most of their big exclusives aren't even first-party eg: Gears of War, Mass Effect.

Sooner or later all third party devs (including Epic) are gonna see that there's no logic in doing exclusives anymore. MS is gonna need a good set of first-party studios when that happens. They seriously need to get Rare off that XBL avatar gig. Such a waste of resources.

Yes MS needs some good first party developers. They need to build a couple of new IPs this gen which will help them in the next gen. Look at Sony, it is reaping the benefit of all the hard work done in the last gen with ps2. Even this gen they have built very good new IP's, which will surely help them next gen.

No dobut MS needs to establish fresh IPs. But as for timed exclusive, I actually think that's a good strategy. 3rd party devs won't always give them exclusive, so it's a smart thing to go for time exclusivity. ToV was a system seller for MS in Japan. They need to show continued interest in Japanese developers. Have Mistwalker repeat their LO feat. Get something better from SE, etc. Rope in From Software for another title, etc. I know this is all JRPG specific but that's where my mind treads. :fear:

And yeah, they should buyout Remedy while they're at it.

Wow.

First lesson is public speaking, kid: Never commit :wallbash:

Didn't you say The Saboteur was gonna be GOTY? :roflroll:

And I'm right about Natal; you'll see. Anyone whose played a PS Eye game will tell you why motion controlled gaming without a controller or any point of reference won't work. And the PS Eye btw, which has been out for two years now, is technically superior to Natal. If you want stuff like Boom Blox, Natal will be great. But for the games we play, the kind that require accuracy and responsiveness, it will be a complete failure.

You took that seriously?

KNOWING MY LOVE FOR MW2??

And I think Natal is meant for the casual market. So is the PS3 wand. They're just trying to kidnap a few thousand Nintendo kiddies.

None of these products are for us. Unless you like casual games, that is.

Natal will capture video at 30 fps. That's critical when you want to capture motion and use it for game control. They've also done away with whatever processing chip they initially planned for Natal. The PS Eye on the other hand captures video at 60 fps at native resolution. 120 fps if you drop the resolution.
