The Windows Thread

^The Lumia has Nokia drive installed which is a very good turn by turn voice navigation system for India. I believe its on all symbian phones as well and it is quite good and.

Battery life is subpar. There is a bug in the software due to which its quite low. An update is coming in January to correct it. on Edge its fine though and lasts a day. The problem is on 3G.

I've written my thoughts on the Apple thread, but i'll post them here too.

Waise after using WP7 for 2-3 days I can see why its still basically a WIP. Its smooth, buttery and social and contacts integration is WP's trump card but thats about it IMO. It has some questionable UI decisions in many areas.

1.The design of the marketplace app on the phone is bizarre(Top app lists include games too!!). To buy an app in iOS or Android, you just click buy, enter your password and boom. here it takes you to another webpage where you have to enter your verified by visa password. Its slow, clunky and you need to remember that password as well. The Zune app is 100 times worse than iTunes in syncing stuff. No way to see app purchase history on WP7 as well unless u log into the Zune app on your PC or website.

2. The keyboard has a very weird idea of putting the "send/post' key at the bottom in the center instead of the right. WTFisthat? Over years, our thumbs are hardwired to automatically move to the bottom right/right whenever we want to hit enter, but this is changing it for no benefit really and I am having a hard time trying to adjust to it. The enter key is present at the bottom right, but it doesn't send only moves to the next line. This is hugely problematic during IM/Whatsapp/Facebook or pretty much most forms of short online communications.

3. The top bar which generally shows the battery and signal strength disappears when you use the phone. Its only shown in the lock screen. That is a very stupid decision IMO as you always want to see the signal and battery level while using the phone to keep track of them. No idea why they chose to do it.

To me, iOS 5 is the gold standard. For people who want to do more with their OS and want more control, Android it is. iOS may look "old and dated" but it is the OS that is the gets the job done the simplest way and has all the stuff 99% people want and does it well.. Not to mention the apps, all the high quality apps. WP has the basic apps, but otherwise lot of things missing or not equal in functionality with their Android/iOS counterparts (Facebook for example does not have groups, friends lists etc). WP has lots of "potential, i'll give it that, but its no way at par with either iOS or android today as much as Microsoft fanboys online will have you believe. To me the social integration is the only thing it does better than the other two.

My rating on day one was 7/10, now its 6/10 because of these weird decisions. iOS and Android guys, really dont bother with WP7 right now. Maybe WP7.6 or WP8. But today, there is no compelling reason to get WP7. It does nothing better than the Big Two except the integration of FB and twitter. I prefer iOS, so if any Android guy wants to move away from it, I'd say iOS only. If you are going closed source, go with Apple.

If I am not wrong .. Putting ur cc details and passwords everytime is coz of some shitty RBI rule

I am pretty sure when I buy things online , I have to keep on re entering details

Then how come iOS and Android dont have it .. hmmm

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my phone exchanged due a faulty battery and now on 3G fulltime the battery lasts from 8 am morning to 10pm at night on decent usage (music+twitter+ score checking+ whatsapp+calls). Heck this is more than enough for me. If i switch off 3G when not in use I could probably make it last till next day morning but I charge everyday anyway.

WP7 is a pretty nice OS. As smooth as iOS is. Issue for me now is lack of specialised apps like EPL, F1, last.fm. Or like how iOS had a PVR cinemas app, or an ebay india app. These things are lacking. Games are there, but i dont play much games on the phone anyway.

The free Nokia J headset i got is quite cool too. Probably one of the best BT headsets i've used yet. Costs 4.5-5k in retail I believe.

I dont think WP7 can convert die hard iOS and Android users today though just because its a different design. I already have an iPad2 and I dont care for Android, so I could make the switch

^I know, but does that matter? When iOS came out, there was no other such powerful alternatives so people bought iPhones because there wasn't anything as good. Today, WP7 guys can argue yea it'll come it'll come, but consumers have no reason/need to wait when competing platforms have equally good or better phones with lot more apps. Maybe they'll wait till all the apps come.

It could turn out to be a classic chicken and egg story. Consumers wont buy WP7 till all their favourite apps are there, and developers wont develop for WP7 till they have a sizeable userbase.

Although I hope Nokia and MS solve the userbase issue as Nokia is still strong in europe and asia.

I actually like the new Lumia phone and the Mango OS in general. There is obviously the Metro UI, which looks absolutely fantastic unlike Android which looks more like an imitation of the iPhone. It's well designed, intuitive, really accessible and more importantly the typography MS have used is brilliant.

Regarding the apps which seems to be the most common complaint, all the apps that I use on the iPhone 4 are available for WP7 and the dev support is great which gives me a promise of better apps in the future. I don't care about the numbers, the phone does what I need and looks brilliant.
