Windows Phone 8 shown running on 64GB Vertu with integrated SkyDrive storage?

qJYNe.png

Following the leak of several alleged Windows Phone 8 screenshots earlier this week, additional images appear to have surfaced. Chinese site wpxap has posted a number of photos of what it says is a Vertu device running Windows Phone 8. The photos show a device with 64GB of storage, identified as a Vertu in the operating system's settings menu. Vertu was Nokia's luxury phone arm that the company has agreed to sell to private equity group EQT this week.

While we can't be certain this is a genuine Windows Phone 8 build running on a Vertu, one particular screenshot shows a SkyDrive cloud storage settings menu. The menu is not present in the current SkyDrive application on Windows Phone, and appears to be part of the general built-in settings menu — indicating that Microsoft could be building SkyDrive cloud storage into Windows Phone 8. We'll know more about Microsoft's general plans for Windows Phone 8 soon, the company hosts a Windows Phone Summit next week on June 20th.

Windows Phone 8 screenshots allegedly leak, show Skype integration and new camera UI

LySSG.png

Microsoft is widely expected to unveil Windows Phone 8 at a special event next week, but more details about the mobile operating system appear to have leaked ahead of its debut. Nokia Innovations has posted several screenshots that seem to show how Skype will be integrated into Windows Phone 8. One particular screenshot shows an incoming video call that looks like Windows Phone's native calling app, another shows Skype and RCSe integration in the People Hub.

The site has also posted a screenshot of what is claimed to be the new camera UI for Windows Phone 8. The simple layout includes a slider on the left to adjust zoom and a button to switch between the front and rear facing cameras. There's also a screenshot of a "DataSmart" feature that we've heard mentioned before. The feature will allegedly track usage and consumption of data, and one screenshot shows off a live tile for the app.

We can't be certain that the screenshots are genuine, but they do appear to show features we're likely to see in Windows Phone 8. Microsoft is also expected to be working on improved hardware support for multi-core processors, four screen resolutions, and NFC radio support with a contact-less "wallet experience" in Windows Phone 8. We'll be at Microsoft's Windows Phone Summit on June 20th to bring you all the very latest on Windows Phone 8.

This better be good...

June 18--Microsoft has finally released the details of its much-hyped media event: The invitation-only news conference, where the tech company is expected to debut a tablet device, is scheduled to take place at Milk Studios in Hollywood on Monday afternoon.

Milk Studios, at the corner of Cahuenga Boulevard and Willoughby Avenue, says on its website that it "stands at the crossroads of the fashion, music, photography and film worlds." The company is based out of Los Angeles and New York and "is a hub for nurturing creativity and supporting partnerships with some of the industry's most visionary talent and innovative brands."

Last week, taking a page out of rival Apple's book, Microsoft sent out emailed invitations promising a "major Microsoft announcement -- you will not want to miss it."

The company gave no hints about what it was planning to announce and said details about the venue would come a few hours before the 3:30 p.m. Monday event. Invitations were non-transferable, and photo opportunities would be limited, Microsoft said.

Speculation quickly arose that the company would release a Microsoft-branded tablet running Windows 8 to take on Apple's iPad. Others, including Tech Crunch, have guessed that the tablet could be more like a glorified e-reader made in partnership with Barnes & Noble. Just last month, the bookstore chain announced that Microsoft would invest $605 million in a new digital subsidiary of Barnes & Noble. The deal is expected to help the bookseller compete against Amazon and Apple in the e-reader market.

Regardless, the device could run up against stiff competition. As my colleague David Sarno put it, "tablets from the world's leading device makers have failed to gain appreciable traction against the iPad -- not Dell, not Motorola, not Asus, not LG, not HTC, not Hewlett-Packard, not Research in Motion, not even Amazon."

We'll be at the event and will keep you posted.

Microsoft unveils Surface tablets, powered by Windows 8

One tablet with NVIDIA chips, another with Intel, and a really smart cover.

surface-640x468.jpg

The Earth-shattering Microsoft announcement we've been waiting for is finally here. As several pre-event rumors suggested, Microsoft is indeed building its own tablet.

Make that two tablets. One Windows RT tablet runs an NVIDIA Tegra 3 ARM processor and the other Windows 8 Pro tablet runs Intel's Ivy Bridge Core i5 chips. One thing that looks really cool are new magnetic covers that are quite reminiscent of Apple's "Smart Cover" for the iPad. But it's a lot smarter—Microsoft's cover actually includes a multitouch trackpad and a keyboard. There are two, as we explain in this story: a Touch Cover with virtual keys and a Type Cover with a tactile keyboard and touchpad.

Typing on the cover is twice as efficient as typing on glass, according to Microsoft. There's also a stylus.

10.6-inch devices running Windows 8, the "Surface" tablets borrow their name from Microsoft's table-sized computer that's been an impressive yet niche product for the past few years. In announcing the new tablets, CEO Steve Ballmer stressed that Microsoft has been a hardware company for decades, with mice, keyboards, webcams, and of course the Xbox, among many others.

While Microsoft typically lets hardware partners build Windows-powered PCs and tablets, Surface hardware is built by Microsoft. "Things work better when hardware and software are considered together," Ballmer said. In what is perhaps a nod toward Apple's so-called "Retina Display" marketing term for high-definition screens, Microsoft said the displays are so good that your eye won't be able to distinguish individual pixels. The exact resolution is unconfirmed, but we do know the tablets feature Gorilla Glass.

"Much like Windows 1.0 needed the mouse, we wanted to give Windows 8 it's own companion hardware innovation," Ballmer said.

Here are the specs for the two tablets:

Screen-Shot-2012-06-18-at-7.46.48-PM-640x310.png

The Intel tablet weighs 903 grams and is 13.5 mm thick, while the NVIDIA/Windows RT one weighs 676 grams and is 9.3 mm thick. They each have a 10.6-inch display. Office Home & Student 2013 RT is listed for the Windows RT tablet, as well as microSD, USB 2.0, and Micro HD Video. Office isn't listed on the Intel tablet, but x86 Windows 8 devices will run all standard Windows applications. Ports on the Intel tablet include microSDXC, USB 3.0, and Mini DisplayPort.

Even with the cover, the tablets are quite thin, as you can see here:

And here:

The newly unveiled Surface site doesn't say which model is shown in those pictures. In any case, the Windows RT version will be available in 32GB and 64GB, and the Windows 8 Pro device will be available in 64GB and 128GB. Each have front- and rear-facing cameras, and 2x2 MIMO WiFi antennas.

Surface tablets have 16:9 aspect ratio, a built-in kickstand and edges that are angled at 22 degrees, "a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use," Microsoft says. The casing uses "VaporMg" technology, "a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch." These are supposedly the first PCs with a vapor-deposited (PVD) magnesium case, which makes for a device that is thin, light, rigid, and strong.

Microsoft claims it's a tablet that's as great as a PC, and a PC that's as great as a tablet. As for availability, the Windows 8 RT tablet will be ready around the time of Windows 8 general availability, a few months from now. The Windows 8 Pro unit will ship a few months after the Windows RT One. We don't know the price yet.

So far, we're not seeing any indication of integrated 3G or 4G cellular connectivity. There are, however, some pretty pictures at the new Microsoft Surface site.

Well, it's official.

Although Microsoft's newly unveiled Windows Phone 8 boasts exciting features like more customization options and integration with voice over IP, one unpleasant suspicion we had about the new mobile OS has been confirmed: current Windows Phone devices won't be able to upgrade to WP8.

Existing WP7 owners, especially with Lumia 810 or 900:

Well they are providing wp7.8 update for current wp owners which will bring in all the cosmetic changes and make it similar to wp8 :good:

The hardware improvements are practically not possible to be pushed as an update..

Kudos to MSFT for providing whatever they could from wp8 :majesty:

Well Jokes apart, technically it would've been impossible I guess. Since they are compeltely uprooting the innards of WP with WP8 going shared code with Win8 so yea, it is a step MS had to take.WP's shitty adoption rate so far could be a blessing in disguise. Only the 10 people who bought WP7 will be upset..

Live?? As in happening right now?? I thought it was just an hour or a event, followed with a day long demo. Had no idea, it is Microsoft's own e3, running for days.

Also, thanks for the link.
