no WP8 for current lumia phones

Technically, not possible with a software update. 7.8 will have all features, minus the kernel. So, for apps, a lot of extra coding will be required, just like supporting gingerbread on android. Apart from full integration, and a lot of apps, you will not miss anything, which I think is fair trade. Then again, I am sure most apps from big players will be ported to 7.8, as it will still be just two percent of total effort and will increase the market somewhat. A year down the line, I don't think any one will bother with it, just like no one cares about galaxy s2 now.

Microsoft puts tablet and cellphone tools into developers' hands, world waits for magic.

Microsoft announced they've begun distributing the Xbox SmartGlass Software Development Kit (SDK) out to "game developers and entertainment partners." The SDK includes the SmartGlass Studio, JavaScript Library, and sample codes.

Hopefully, this means the proof-of-concepts we saw at E3 with the likes of Halo 4 and Game of Thrones will become reality starting this fall, which is when Microsoft states that SmartGlass Activities will begin seeing public release.

According to Microsoft, SmartGlass will be available for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and "other portable devices." So, iPhone and Android then, we're sure.

sad NokiaIndia.. planning to release Lumia 900 in India in Q3 and just few days after that WP8 OS and devices will be released which Lumia900 cant upgrade to!!!! what are they thinking!! :(

Sucks to be them, but then again, India will not see surface till like 3months later from actual release.

Both Windows Surface and WP8 are looking very promising !

:good: WP8 looks great!

If the 2012 iPhone looks like that long phone that the rumor mill is spitting out, and if Nokia comes out with a decent dual core Lumia with WP8, I'd love to buy a Lumia. I do really hope that WP8 is a success and more good apps come out.

Do you even own one ??

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57456655-94/no-windows-phone-8-upgrade-for-current-devices/

Existing WP7 owners, especially with Lumia 810 or 900:

tumblr_m5a3u3jvow1rqmizh.gif

Those who don't even own a WinPho 7 are more concerned about WinPho 8 update

There is no way MS could have updated current phones because of the shared code the Winpho 8 uses .. Plus the hardware requirements wouldn't suffice

Atleast we are getting Winpho 7.8 .. It has all the UI changes (not just start screen)

WHile on the other hand many of teh Xperia phones launched by Sony in March this year weren't upgradable to ICS even though it was released in October last year

Well Jokes apart, technically it would've been impossible I guess. Since they are compeltely uprooting the innards of WP with WP8 going shared code with Win8 so yea, it is a step MS had to take.WP's shitty adoption rate so far could be a blessing in disguise. Only the 10 people who bought WP7 will be upset..

MS did a major mistake by going with CE for Windows phone 7

They should have used NT straight from the start .

There was just no benefit to go with CE as the old Windows Mobiles weren't upgradeable to WinPho 7 anyways

Shitty adoption rate surely helped :P

I know I am feeding a troll but here goes:

1. GB is already a great OS, unlike WP7, which has its fair share of cons as an OS, and every WP user was looking forward to WP8. Even you had several posts about Apollo going to be great and fix the issues blah blah.

2. All Xperia phones are getting upgraded to ICS. Xperia S got ICS update few days back. Xperia Neo etc got updated 15 days ago. So, your point is invalid.

And UI changes? Really? That is like getting a theme of WP8. All the newer apps for WP8 wont work at all on WP7.8. So, existing WP7 users saying apps are coming, apps are coming are going to be shafted, as devs will focus more on WP8 instead of improving WP7 apps. Or, if the devs think WP7 has more users, they wont care for WP8 exclusive apps unless the users increase. So, WP8 will have to make do with WP7 apps instead. I dont see how this is good for the OS.

And then Lumia 900 is already obsolete, even before it is launched in India. That is just sad and stupid. And dont compare Android and WP when it comes to upgrade and OS, every decent Android phone is running ICS officially or unofficially. They dont have to depend on manufacturers for that.

That is the scary part. when u look at iOS, most apps except demanding games work across all generations of phones. Here MS is completely abandoning WP7 owners because WP8 apps wont work on WP7.

Since the code is completely different, I doubt if devs will bother supporting WP7 at all. They will have loads of opportunities with W8 and WP8.

IMO WP7 was a complete mistake. They just had to get something out to counter (unsuccessfully) the Android and iOS train. Now they are starting from scratch...And yet again we dont know how it'll do. Although WP8 seems ike something that will be their lambi race ka ghoda because of how they designed it. Remains to be seen if the ghoda gets momentum and push

This whole fragmentation issue, people are looking at the wrong things that upset people. in Android, 95% of people out there dont care about GB or ICS. Thats irrelevant. They probably dont even know what is the thing running. The real issue is, apps not working on GB, or apps not working on some phones. Not even old phones new phones. U should see Facebook comments of upset people at Temple run or Max Payne mobile complaining about how it doesnt run on theri SGS3 or HOX etc. THey spent sh*t loads of money to get a high end device and they obv will feel shortchanged when they see their friends playing it on their old phone and they cant. Reasons, irrelevant. Avg customer doesn't care about developers. This is why some people feel safe in iOS and like it. Complete convenience and hassle free expereince.

This wil be the issue when WP8 comes out. The avg guys probably wont even know what it is, but whenthey see a new popular app out for WP and it says sorry cant run on your system, thats when the sh*t hits the fan. That upsets people. This is the core issue of fragmentation, not how many peope have latest OS.

yeah man, I understood how godly the iOS and iPhones are only after using the pos android and lack of apps windows phone. But I still prefer to use my windows phone as my primary phone coz of its super mail client and slick UI, for apps there is an iPad.

Lumia 900 was specifically made for Western markets ..

I wouldn't even bother going for it when you have a cheaper 800 out here

Just today Nokia released Nokia Play to and Nokia Camera extras ..

Nokia is doing enough to support their current phones

Those Samsung and HTC owners would surely be in trouble

@Death Stryke

WP8 will start as 0% market share ..

Initially the developers would surely port their apps to WinPho7 with loss of some features which current phones don't support

Nokia is slowly becoming Microsoft. Nokia maps is coming to all devices. No more exclusive stuff. Maps coming to all WP phones, apps coming to all WP phones I pity Nokia. Its now living at the mercy of Microsoft.

Just some years back it was the biggest maker. But man they made a killing selling those Symbian stuff. Too bad people realized in 2007-8 what a load of crap that was. I thank Apple for reinventing the smartphone. And also for android to imrpove and take it further. Nokia was stumped hard and now they realize they dont have a worthy platform. Killed Meego, which could've been something
