The Windows Thread

Using Windows 8 Release Preview since yesterday and really liking it. The Metro UI is decent and I was wrong to think that this could only work well with a touchscreen monitor. The Internet Explorer in the Metro UI is good too and I like the overall speed of IE 10 :)

I think I will buy Windows 8 when it comes out. Loving the Kindle app as well :)

What is the situation of Windows Store and metro apps ??

I tried the release preview / customer preview / Release candidate / whatever you call it. It was nice to look at, however I did feel it was a bit too touch oriented. YMMV. Give it a shot in perhaps a Virtual machine before you go ahead and decide to switch

Tell me the steps do it ..

I am currently downloading Windows 8 RP

I just want to install Windows 8 and play with it for a week

Then revert back to Windows 7

http://www.redmondpie.com/install-windows-8-consumer-preview-in-virtualbox-virtual-machine-on-mac-windows-7-how-to-tutorial/ This won't affect your Win 7 install in any way. Play around with it a bit and give it a shot. It might not quite be as fast as Win 8 would be if you installed it as a separate operating system but it's good enough for a try.

Yeah .. It is Bing's homepage

This is how IE 10 metro version looks like for any other website

There is no taskbar , no search bar , nothing

Everything disappears

You have to hover you mouse at the below and then bars appear

This is how IVG looks -

No need to do this ..

Even if you install Windows 8 RP everything is retained

If you have to revert back to Windows 7 just use the previous restore point

I have now switched totally to IE 10 on both metro and desktop versions. It's really fast and definitely the best IE version in many years. Also, I totally cleaned out my Visa install and am only running Windows 8 Release Preview. It is really fast and the full screen Metro apps is something very unique. Plus, whenever I get an email or message on Facebook; I get a notification on the top right hand corner of the screen just like one gets when using a smartphone. This is an extremely cool feature :)

Microsoft will reportedly lift Windows RT tablet licensing restrictions in January

MIcrosoft-Surface-Pro.jpg

Microsoft is reportedly planning to lift Windows RT licensing restrictions in January, opening up the new operating system to additional OEMs for ARM-based tablets. China Times reports that the software giant has been working with a variety of chipmakers and OEMs in what has previously been reported as a way to limit variations based on specific partnerships. Nvidia is said to have picked Asus and Lenovo for Windows RT, while Texas Instruments has partnered with Toshiba and Qualcomm with HP and Samsung.

The restrictions will reportedly be lifted in January, making way for some momentum around Windows RT tablets. Samsung and Dell are both rumored to be preparing Windows RT-based tablets, but only Asus and Microsoft itself have committed to devices. HP has opted out of building an ARM-based Windows 8 tablet and HTC was reportedly denied the ability to create one, at least initially. Coupled with the licensing costs for Windows RT, which are reportedly as high as $85 per device, it's no surprise that Windows RT tablets will be limited at launch. If the latest reports are accurate then expect to see the bulk of Windows RT tablets at the Consumer Electronics Show next year.

Are you sure about that? Have you tried it?

Cos this says otherwise - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/i-want-to-uninstall-the-windows-8-consumer-preview/aef00f7a-8566-4fc9-a9de-106826f5f8b5

No .. Haven't tried it

I read it on Verge forums

Just make sure it's legit cos that shouldn't be possible. It's not a System Restore type upgrade you're doing, you're installing a new operating system over it. If you put Windows 8 in a new partition then yes, it's not too hard but if you put W8 on top of W7 you won't be able to simply uninstall or restore to an earlier state. You'll need your old recovery disks or the W7 install discs atleast.
