Hi,

My long overdue PC upgrade is well, still overdue :)

Anyway, after some good amount of time on various forums, these are some of the options that interest me:

Processor: Intel Core i-5 750- 10.25k

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 - 6.75k or MSI P55-GD65 - 11k or intel DP55WB - 6.7k

RAM: 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHz - 5k

GPU: Palit GTX 260 Core 216 Sonic - 11k or Sapphire 5770 1GB GDDR5(DX11) - 11.3k

HDD: Seagate 1TB SATAII 7200.12 series - 4k

Cabinet: CoolerMaster 590 - 3.8k

SMPS: Corsair TX 650W - 7k

And

Phenom II X4 955 @ 8.5k

MSI 785G E51 @ 5.6k

Transcend 4GB DDr3 @ 5k

PowerColour HD4870 512MB GDDR5 @ 8.1k or Sapphire 5770 1GB GDDR5(DX11) - 11.3k

Seagate 500GB @ 2.4k

CM 310 @ 1.5k

Corsair VX450W @ 4.1k

As you can see, the second config is definitely cheaper, but what I want to know is how much is the performance difference ? Not just for gaming but for other multimedia tasks such as AV encoding etc ? Is the i5 system worth the extra cost compared to the phenom II X4 in the long run (4 years) ?

And, how good is 5770 compared to GTX 260+ ? As you can see, with more or less the same price 5770 is definitely attractive with dx11 support and all that. But wanted an experts opinion on which is better among the two, performance wise ? One complaint I read about 5770 is the buggy drivers. So still on the fence.

Advice is very much appreciated.

PS: It would also help, if you can name a reliable vendor in Blore. I've got some names from friends/relatives etc. But the more options I have, I can negotiate better

Also, how important is the cabinet ? For ex: I'm finding a cabinet from a company called VIP for Rs 1000. Is it ok or is there is any advantage of sticking to a branded cabinet like CM which is Rs 2k more !

Dude don't compromise on cabinet , get a good one which has lots of 120mm fans to keep it cool.

I invested 8k on Antec 900 cabinet back in 07 to cool of my OC'd 8800GTX

I'm buying an i5 and a 5770, both of which are "supposed" to be optimized for power consumption. Do I still need all those fans and external cooler and stuff ?

Dont spend more than 2-2.5 on a cabinet. Just make sure its got room for future expansions (2nd GPU/extra HDD/DVD drive slots etc), slots in the front for USB, audio output and good ventilation (a fan on the side is a good idea).

Dont bother with branded cabinet unless you have money to burn. Put that money towards your PC components. Get something thats functional. You can easily get a great cabinet with all those features for under 2k.

Also dont bother with all those cool blue/red lights. They seem like a good idea at first but wears thin fast. Functionality over appearance.

B-b-but PC gaming sucks right? I mean you have to upgrade like every year man!

I knew you will come up with that eventually

In my defense, console gaming is getting way too expensive for married folks

So your solution to that problem is to build a 50k gaming PC? You often put out fires with gasoline?

^^ Yeah, there is i3 also if you want to look for. But since I won't be upgrading for another 4 years (atleast plan to), I'm going with this. Anyway, there's an option of buying a laptop instead as well. Helps out during powercut and occupies a lot less space ! But in 40k, I doubt if I can get a decent laptop for gaming :P

I am not sure how much sense it makes to get a DX 11 card right now. The current crop put out by ATI isnt that great, the price to performance ratio is very average (the 5770 infact is slower than the GTX 260 in almost every test), there arent many DX11 specific games around to take advantage and with Nvidia working on their own DX 11 stuff the prices of AMD cards are bound to fall when the competition hits the market.

If you are buying immediately then I would say get a cheaper DX 10 card and sit tight for a year or so. By this time next year you will be able to pick from the cream of the crop and for 10-11k you would be able to get an excellent card.

Edit: Why the hell isnt this in Gaming PCs thread? Neo you should know better than to create duplicate threads. :P

So which one would you suggest to play the current games upto the next year at 1440x900 resolution (19" monitor) ?
