PS3 downloads excruciatingly slow :cry:

Jigsaw

Recommended Posts

The past one week i've noticed my psn downloads are blood curdingly slow. Have always had a wifi connection through a netgear WGR614v9. When i do a speed test on the ps3 browser via speedtest.net i get barely 1Mb as the download speed. Upload speed is reported correctly though. I'm on Airtel 2MBps.

The pc downloads just dandy... so nothing to complain there. Hardwired the ps3 into the wifi router through an ethernet cable, the downloads still suck. When i do an internet connection test via the pc network settings option.. i get atrocious speeds of 440kbps-500kbps. This is not even a quarter that i should get. The ps3 and the wireless router are just a couple of feet away from each other and at the same level. Signal strength on the ps3 displays as 100%

Only change i have done is gone from Windows 7 Ultimate X64 RC to 7 Ultimate X64 RTM. Upgraded the netgear to the latest firmware as well.... no go.

What am i missing? Have manually assigned dns in the airtel modem, the router as well as the lan interface properties in windows. Windows is set to automatically obtain ip address. The router is also set to do the same. Router settings obviously wouldn't change with the change in Windows from RC to RTM... and my memory sucks. I have a feeling its got to do something with the ip address settings in windows itself. Last time i set it was last june and i forgot :majesty:

Is it that i have to set a static ip address somewhere?? i really don't know where though and what? is it 192.168.1.2 or 10.0.0.2??

please help guys :giggle:

Your PC OS shouldn't matter for your PS3 connection. Suggest look at the ports.

Just check that the DNS servers are listed correctly.

gramps, did get what u meant by "looking at the ports"

Also the when i do an internet connection settings test via ps3 network settings... the primary and secondary dns appears incorrect. I have set OpenDNS on the modem, pc as well as the router.

Bro you are using Airtel right... Just call their customer support and tell them that you want to set it your network setting to a static ip. They will give you the details like Ipaddress to add (in most cases they might tell you to use anything between 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.200 i think)

But make sure you ask them for the DNS servers values as well... Use these values and then try, lets see... :)

jigsaw - go to your PS3 > Network Setup. Select Manual, select the network. When it comes to IP setup enter 10.0.0.10. Default gateway = 10.0.0.1. DNS = 4.4.4.4 / 8.8.8.8. For the rest select default options.

You don't need to do anything on your PC.

I'm not sure about your connection Jigsaw, but over here in Muscat, PSN is just slow, no matter what you do. On occasion, the speeds perk up a little bit, but as a thumb rule, I keep my downloads on overnight. It must some issue with the way the servers are set up, because the same PS3 console was downloading stuff at blazing speeds in the US.

Thanks guys for the quick responses...

@nikhil

airtel gave me ip 192.168.1.2 and default gateway as 192.168.1.1 and their own dns.

@ gramps

tried your suggestion... the internet connection test on the ps3 returned 285kbps :P But my internet speed is currently 1MBps ( throttled by airtel .. i've been FUP'ed).

@yumtee

i wonder whats wrong. psn has always been rockin for me ever since things went wrong for the past week. I really doubt its anything except configurations at my end.

So much for being forgetful. I have a feelin its the windows tcp/ip settings that i should have noted down when upgrading windows from RC to RTM.

Need more help guys... :chair:

UPDATE :

just browsed to speedtest.net via the ps3 browser and did a speedtest. The search results look very similar to what i would get on the pc..

1.25Mb/s downlink and 0.84Mb/s uplink. Does this mean the Internet Connection Test wizard in the ps3 network settings menu is broken??? :WOOtjumpy.

I am throttled from 2MBps down to 1MBps as stated earlier... could that be playing on my mind? :) now i'm beginning to doubt if anything was even wrong.

Why don't you try PS3Proxy, I never download directly on PS3.

My great Tata connection drops like a bitch every 10 mins and almost every time file used to get corrupted and I had to redownload. With PS3proxy, I download with Flashget with Max D/L speed possible, no file corruption at all.

Don't trust that PS3 speedtest. If you can connect to PSN and can browse you're all set. PSN downloads are just slow :wOOtjumpy:

@gramps

ps3 browser > speedtest.net is what i referred to and yeah the speeds were pretty much in line to what i'd get on the pc. So i guess the ps3 internet connection test option in network settings itself is flawed..

@udham

thanks for the tip.. have installed it just now. Will tinker with in in the evening when i wake up.... gotta sleep... must sleep... must sleep... and hope india bats second :paagaldance:

why people dont get same problem

my case is just opposite

i am getting good download speed of 1mbps and which is showing perfectly fine in my airtel connection but i am not able to connect to MW2

okay what i did to get good speed:

You have ip address of your machine(pC) >

method to create static IP>

1)Pick any ip address among:20-100 for example u picked 25

so your IP address should be 192.16.1.25

okay in webbrowser type http://192.168.1.1/\

username :Admin

password:password

On left side there should be tab.

click on Advanced setup

Check NAT.

now click on Add (which should appear on your right side of screen)

over there enter these values-

Customized service:PS3

protocol:Both or TCP/UDP

External port:2005

Internal port:2005

Ip address: 192.168.1.25

Now Select PS3.

1)Go to network setting

2)Select wireless connection (please note i am using wireless connection and letting ps3 detect my connect wireless only)

3)Select manual

4)Give your Key

5)Select manual IP address

6)Ip address:192.168.1.25

Subnet mask:255.255.255.0

Gateway:192.168.1.1

primary DNS : 208.67.222.222

secondary DNS: 208.67.220.220

DNS i took from your Last message only if this DNS dont work please try my machine DNS.

primary DNS : 202.56.224.153

secondary DNS: 59.144.127.17

now first check connection.if it goes good your dNS setting is good to go.

else try my given DNS setting i am sure it will work.

do let me know in case of any problems

cheers

anshul
