According to Japanese gaming website Game Watch the new 40GB Playstation 3’s consume 67W less power than the other versions. They measured each value closely and took pictures as proof as shown below.

The comparison along with side by side shots of the two consoles can be seen at Game Watch’s site PC Watch.

They are one of the largest Japanese gaming sites around and often do such test so there should be no doubt this new information is 100% true.

So it looks like Sony has reworked the internals quite a bit in the last few months, to say the least.

The earlier posts dealt with the rumours of the 65nm chip being fitted in the 40GB PS3s and speculation of lower power consumption due to the reduced vents in the model. This supposedly is actual proof of the lower power consumption of the the 40GB PS3s.

I don't think 65nm is the only reason for lesser power consumption. The 40gb model lacks both EE and GS chips, that must be contributing to it as well. I bet the 80gb one will fit somewhere between 40 and NTSC 60gb models.

The 40GB PS3 doesn't have a 65nm chip. So the CPU is definitely not the reason for the lower power consumption. I guess the removal of the EE and GS freed up a lot of space on the motherboard, allowing Sony to reflow some of the circuitry differently compared to the 60GB model thereby reducing thermal buildup due to circuit proximities. So the combination of the improved circuitry and absence of the EE and GS could be responsible for the lower power consumption.
